Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

I couldn’t move.

The entire room waited for me.

My hand rested on the cold brass handle, but my mind was somewhere else.

Eight years.

Eight years of birthdays without her.

Eight years of school events where Lily looked at every woman in the crowd hoping one of them would be her mother.

Eight years of believing someone I loved had walked away.

And now…

She was on the other side of a door.

“Daniel.””

Vanessa’s voice pulled me back.

I turned slowly.

She was no longer pretending.

The sweet expression was gone.

“Open that door and you will regret it.””

A chill ran through me.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa immediately looked around.

She realized she had spoken too honestly.

“I mean… think about what you’re doing.””

I stared at her.

“You knew about this room.””

Silence.

That was enough of an answer.

Lily stepped beside me.

“Daddy, please.””

I pushed the handle down.

The old lock resisted.

Then finally broke free.

The door opened slowly.

A wave of cold air escaped from inside.

The room was dark.

Dust floated through the beam of light from the ballroom.

“Mom?””

Lily’s voice shook.

A weak sob came from inside.

“Lily?””

My daughter screamed.

“Mommy!””

She ran forward, but I grabbed her hand.

“Wait.””

Something felt wrong.

The room wasn’t empty.

There was a chair.

A small table.

A thin blanket.

A water bottle.

And on the floor…

A woman.

She was sitting against the wall.

Her hair was shorter than I remembered.

Her face was thinner.

But I knew her.

I knew those eyes.

“Emily…”

The name left my mouth like a prayer.

My wife looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Daniel.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Lily broke free from my hand and ran to her.

They held each other.

The sound of my daughter crying destroyed something inside me.

For years, I had watched her miss her mother.

And all that time…

Her mother had been right here.

I stepped into the room.

“Who did this?””

Emily looked past me.

Straight at Vanessa.

Vanessa stood frozen in the doorway.

“You should have left her alone,” Emily whispered.

The guests started whispering.

“What is happening?””

“Is that his wife?””

“Vanessa knew?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“No, this is a misunderstanding.””

Emily laughed weakly.

“A misunderstanding?””

Her voice broke.

“You locked me in a room for eight years.””

The ballroom erupted.

I turned toward Vanessa.

My voice was low.

“You said she left.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fake tears.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stepped closer.

“She was unstable. She wanted to leave. She was dangerous.””

Emily looked at me.

“You believe her?””

I wanted to answer.

But I couldn’t.

Because my entire life was suddenly splitting apart.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Daniel, you know me. You know I would never hurt anyone.””

I looked at Emily.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

I remembered every time she told me Emily had abandoned us.

Every time she comforted me.

Every time she said she wanted to help raise Lily.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“How did you know where Emily was?””

Vanessa went silent.

I took a step closer.

“How did you know she was gone?””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Emily reached into the pocket of her worn sweater.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would find the truth.””

She handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

Daniel.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Emily standing outside our house.

The date was eight years ago.

The day she disappeared.

On the back, there was a handwritten message.

“She knows I remember everything.””

I looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

Emily stared at Vanessa.

“She did.””

The room went silent again.

May you like

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You were never supposed to open that door.””
