Chapter 7: The Brother Who Came Back
For several seconds, I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.
My brother was dead.
I had watched the funeral.
I had watched my mother collapse.
I had carried flowers to his grave.
That memory had been one of the strongest moments of pain in my life.
How could it be a lie?
“No,” I whispered.
Emily looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped away from the speaker.
“My brother died.””
The room felt smaller.
My father’s recording continued.
“I know what you believe. I believed it too.””
My hands shook.
“He was manipulated. Hidden. Protected by people who benefited from his disappearance.””
The recording stopped.
Emily looked at me.
“Your father knew.””
I sat down.
Everything I knew about my family was falling apart.
“My whole life…”
I looked at the documents.
“My whole life has been controlled by people lying to me.””
Emily sat beside me.
“Not everything.””
I looked at her.
“Lily is real. I’m real.””
Her voice softened.
“And you found us.””
That was the only thing keeping me standing.
Hours later, we escaped the basement through a hidden exit behind the shelves.
The moment we stepped outside, police were waiting.
Someone had called them.
The detective approached.
“Mr. Carter.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know about my brother?””
His expression changed.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
He sighed.
“We suspected.””
My anger exploded.
“You suspected my brother was alive?””
“Your father asked us to investigate years ago.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because the evidence disappeared.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Who made it disappear?””
The detective looked at me.
“Your uncle.””
My stomach dropped.
“My uncle?””
He nodded.
“Your father’s younger brother.””
I had almost forgotten about him.
Thomas Carter.
The man who left the family after my brother’s funeral.
The man who refused to speak about the accident.
The man everyone blamed.
That night, we found him.
He lived alone outside the city.
When he opened the door and saw me, his face changed.
“Daniel.””
I stared.
“You knew.””
He closed his eyes.
“I knew you would come eventually.””
I stepped inside.
“You let me believe my brother was dead.””
Thomas looked older than I remembered.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
He looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
“Vanessa threatened all of us.””
“What did she have?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your brother was alive because your father made a deal.””
“What deal?””
Thomas walked to a cabinet.
He removed an old photograph.
It showed my brother, Alex.
Older.
Alive.
Standing beside Vanessa.
My blood went cold.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“He came back.””
“Why didn’t he come home?””
“Because he wasn’t the same.””
“What happened?””
Thomas looked away.
“He blamed your father for everything.””
I stared at the picture.
My dead brother.
Standing beside the woman who destroyed my life.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Alex.
I almost dropped it.
The number was impossible.
The message contained only four words.
“I need to see you.””
Then another message appeared.
“Come alone.””
Emily grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I have to know.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel, Vanessa controlled your wife for eight years.””
I looked at the screen.
“And my brother for longer.””
Outside the window, a car stopped.
The headlights turned off.
Someone stepped out.
A man.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.

And when he looked through the window…
I knew exactly who he was.
