Chapter 5: The Name Hidden In The Past
I spent the entire night staring at the message.
Your father knew.
It was impossible.
My father had been gone for years.
He couldn’t defend himself.
He couldn’t explain.
And somehow…
His name had been dragged into the worst nightmare of my life.
Emily sat beside me on the couch.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“What if he did know?””
I shook my head.
“My father would never allow this.””
Emily was quiet.
Then she said:
“People can surprise us.””
The next morning, we went through old records.
Bank statements.
Emails.
Documents.
Anything connected to the years after Emily disappeared.
For hours, we found nothing.
Then Lily walked in holding a small wooden box.
“Daddy?””
I looked up.
“Where did you get that?””
“In Grandpa’s old room.””
My heart stopped.
The box belonged to my father.
Inside were old photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope with my name.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally come out.
I sat down.
Emily looked over my shoulder.
The letter continued.
I made a terrible mistake.
My father’s words blurred.
I kept reading.
Vanessa came to me after Emily disappeared. She told me Emily had abandoned you. She asked me to help protect your future.
I closed my eyes.
No.
The letter continued.
At first, I believed her. But months later, I discovered the truth. I found the room. I found Emily.
My breathing stopped.
Emily covered her mouth.
He knew.
My father knew.
The next line nearly destroyed me.
I wanted to tell you. I tried. But Vanessa threatened Lily.
I looked at my daughter.
The room spun.
“She threatened my father with Lily.””
Emily whispered.
“She controlled everyone.””
The final sentence was written darker, as if my father had pressed the pen harder.
Daniel, I left evidence. I hid it where only you would look.
I turned the letter over.
Nothing.
Then Lily pointed.
“Daddy.””
She touched the corner.
“There’s something behind it.””
We carefully opened the paper.
A small key fell out.
Not a normal key.
An old brass key.
The same kind that opened the locked door.
My phone rang.
This time, the number wasn’t unknown.
It was Vanessa.
I answered.
Her voice was calm.
Almost peaceful.
“Did you find the letter?””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
A soft laugh.
“Because your father wasn’t the only one who left evidence.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere you should have looked eight years ago.””
“What does that mean?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel… your wife wasn’t the only person I kept hidden.””
The call ended.
I looked at Emily.
She looked terrified.
Because somewhere in our house…
May you like
Somewhere in the past we thought was buried…
There was another secret waiting to be opened.
