Chapter 8: The Truth About Alex

Alex Carter looked nothing like the brother I remembered.

The boy in my memories had messy brown hair and a crooked smile.

The boy who used to steal cookies from the kitchen.

The boy who promised he would protect me.

The man standing in front of me looked like someone who had spent years fighting a war nobody knew existed.

A scar crossed his cheek.

His eyes were colder.

But they were still his eyes.

“Daniel.””

Hearing my name from him nearly broke me.

I stepped forward.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My fists tightened.

“Why?””

He looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But seeing him standing there made everything complicated.

“You let me mourn you.””

“I know.””

“You let Dad die thinking you were gone.””

His expression changed.

“He knew.””

“What?””

Alex looked at me.

“Dad knew I was alive.””

The room went silent.

“No.””

“He helped me disappear.””

I shook my head.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because Vanessa wanted me gone.””

Alex explained everything.

Years ago, he discovered Vanessa was manipulating people around our family.

He confronted her.

She threatened him.

But she wasn’t alone.

“She had someone powerful behind her,” Alex said.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She wanted your position. Your inheritance. Your company.””

My stomach turned.

“But why marry me?””

Alex looked toward Emily.

“Because she needed to erase your past.””

Emily understood immediately.

“She needed Daniel to believe I abandoned him.””

Alex nodded.

“And she needed Lily to see her as the only mother figure.””

I felt sick.

All those years.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

A carefully designed plan.

“Who was helping her?”” I asked.

Alex was quiet.

Then:

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother died years ago.””

“She died after trying to expose Vanessa.””

Emily covered her mouth.

Alex continued.

“Vanessa destroyed this family piece by piece.””

I looked away.

“I don’t understand.””

Alex stepped closer.

“She didn’t just lock Emily away.””

He lowered his voice.

“She erased everyone who got close to the truth.””

The next day, Alex showed us evidence.

Videos.

Documents.

Recordings.

Everything Vanessa had hidden.

But one thing bothered me.

“Why now?””

Alex looked at me.

“Because she knows I’m back.””

A message appeared on my phone.

Vanessa.

I opened it.

You found him.

My hands went cold.

Another message.

I always knew you would.

Then a photo arrived.

It showed Lily leaving school.

Someone had been watching her.

My blood turned to ice.

I called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

“Daniel.””

“Stay away from my daughter.””

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere your family should have protected.””

I clenched my jaw.

“You threatened Lily.””

“No.””

Her voice became calm.

“I protected her.””

“You’re insane.””

“No, Daniel.””

A pause.

“I’m the only person who has been honest with you.””

I almost laughed.

“Honest?””

“Yes.””

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Ask Alex why he really disappeared.””

I looked at my brother.

His face changed.

Vanessa continued.

“He never told you the truth.””

The call ended.

I stared at Alex.

“What is she talking about?””

He didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

May you like

Because for the first time since he returned…

My brother looked guilty.
