Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden In The Family

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I couldn't stop asking myself one question.

*Why would Emily's mother do this?*

Margaret Hayes had been the person who held my family together after Emily died.

When I couldn't get out of bed.

When I couldn't explain to Lily why her mother wasn't coming home.

When I forgot to eat because grief consumed every part of my life.

Margaret was there.

She brought meals.

She helped with Lily.

She sat beside me and told me:

"Daniel, Emily would want you to keep living.""

Those words had carried me through the darkest days of my life.

Now I was supposed to believe she had helped bring Vanessa into my home?

It felt impossible.

But then I remembered something.

Margaret was the one who first suggested Vanessa.

The one who told me:

"You need someone who can help you build a future.""

At the time, I thought it was love.

Now I wondered if it was something else.

The next morning, I drove to Margaret's house.

I needed answers.

Not guesses.

Not theories.

Answers.

When she opened the door, her smile disappeared the moment she saw my face.

"Daniel?""

I stepped inside.

"We need to talk.""

She looked nervous.

That was the first time I had ever seen Margaret nervous around me.

"Is this about the wedding?""

"No.""

I looked directly at her.

"It's about Vanessa.""

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

She knew.

"Why are you asking about her?""

I stared at her.

"Because Emily knew.""

Margaret froze.

"What?""

"Emily knew Vanessa was dangerous.""

The color left her face.

"Daniel, I don't know what you think—"

"No.""

My voice became firm.

"I saw the video.""

Her lips parted.

"What video?""

"The one Emily recorded before she died.""

Margaret sat down slowly.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"She wasn't supposed to find out.""

My heart stopped.

Those words hurt more than any confession.

Because they weren't denial.

They were surrender.

"What did you do?""

Margaret looked at the floor.

"I was trying to help.""

I laughed quietly.

"Help who?""

She looked up.

"You.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I felt tears building in my eyes.

"Not me.""

I pointed toward the hallway where framed pictures of Emily and Lily hung on the wall.

"You put my daughter in danger.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I never wanted Lily hurt.""

"But you brought Vanessa into our lives.""

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Why?""

Her voice cracked.

"Because I was scared.""

I stared at her.

"Of what?""

She wiped her eyes.

"After Emily died, I saw you disappear. I saw you stop living.""

I didn't respond.

Because it was true.

"But Vanessa seemed perfect.""

I felt sick.

"Perfect?""

Margaret nodded slowly.

"She was charming. She was patient. She told me she wanted to help Lily.""

I stepped back.

"You believed her.""

"Yes.""

"And when did you realize you were wrong?""

She looked away.

"After the engagement.""

My anger grew.

"You knew?""

"I saw how she looked at Lily.""

The room became silent.

"You knew and you didn't tell me?""

Margaret started crying.

"I was ashamed.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"So you stayed quiet.""

"I thought I could fix it.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You thought you could control it.""

She didn't deny it.

I walked toward the window.

The betrayal hurt differently than Vanessa's.

Vanessa was someone I trusted.

But Margaret was family.

She knew exactly what Lily had already lost.

And she still allowed someone dangerous to get close.

"Who introduced Vanessa to you?""

Margaret looked confused.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

She hesitated.

"An old friend.""

"Name.""

Her silence answered before her words did.

"Richard Collins.""

My stomach tightened.

"Vanessa's father.""

Margaret nodded.

The pieces finally connected.

Richard.

Margaret.

Vanessa.

Adrian.

A network of people who had been moving around my life while I thought everything was normal.

"Why would Richard do this?""

Margaret looked afraid.

"I don't know.""

I turned around.

"You do.""

She looked down.

Then whispered:

"Richard believed Vanessa deserved a better life.""

I almost couldn't speak.

"So he used me?""

Margaret didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

That afternoon, Thomas called me.

"Daniel, we recovered part of Emily's video.""

My heart raced.

"What did you find?""

"Not much. But enough.""

I sat down.

"Tell me.""

"Emily mentioned a meeting.""

"With who?""

"She didn't say.""

A pause.

"But there was another file attached to the video.""

"What file?""

"An audio recording.""

My breathing changed.

"Play it.""

"I already did.""

His voice became serious.

"You need to hear this.""

A few seconds later, a recording came through.

Emily's voice.

Quiet.

Fearful.

"I know someone close to me is involved.""

A man's voice responded.

"You need to leave.""

Emily whispered:

"I can't. Lily needs me.""

The man said:

"If they know you found out, they will move faster.""

Emily's voice shook.

"What about Daniel?""

"He can't know yet.""

The recording ended.

I sat frozen.

"Thomas.""

"Yes?""

"Who was the man?""

"We're trying to identify him.""

I closed my eyes.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A picture.

I opened it.

It was a photograph of Emily.

Not a family photo.

A hidden photo.

She was standing outside a law office.

Beside her was a man.

I zoomed in.

And recognized him.

Adrian Blake.

My heart stopped.

Thomas was still talking.

But I couldn't hear him anymore.

Because the impossible was becoming real.

Adrian wasn't just helping Vanessa.

He had been involved before Emily died.

I sent the image to Marcus.

Seconds later, he called.

"Daniel.""

His voice was urgent.

"Where did you get this?""

"Someone sent it.""

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

"Daniel, I found something else.""

"What?""

"I traced the original owner of the photograph.""

I waited.

"It came from a storage account registered under Adrian Blake's name.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"So Adrian had proof.""

"Yes.""

"Why keep it?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Because we both knew.

The evidence wasn't being kept to expose someone.

It was being kept as insurance.

Against someone.

I looked at the photograph again.

Emily standing beside Adrian.

The woman I loved had known something.

She had been fighting something.

And she had been alone.

That evening, I returned home.

Lily ran toward me.

"Daddy!""

I picked her up.

But my smile wasn't real.

She noticed.

"Are you sad again?""

I hugged her tighter.

"Just tired.""

She touched my face.

"Are you going to leave too?""

The question destroyed me.

"No.""

I answered immediately.

"Never.""

She rested her head on my shoulder.

"Promise?""

I held her.

"I promise.""

Later that night, while Lily slept, I received one final message.

This time, there was a name attached.

*Adrian Blake.*

The message contained only one sentence.

*If you want to know who betrayed Emily, come alone.*

And underneath it was an address.

An old warehouse outside the city.

I stared at the screen.

Because I knew this was a trap.

But I also knew something else.

For three years, I had lived with unanswered questions about my wife's death.

Now I finally had a chance to learn the truth.

I grabbed my coat.

Then my phone rang.

It was Thomas.

I answered.

"Daniel, don't go.""

I stopped.

"How did you know?""

His voice was urgent.

"Because I just found out who owns that warehouse.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

A long silence.

May you like

Then Thomas whispered:

"Your late wife's father.""
