Chapter 6: The Fight For My Daughter

The drive to Thomas's office felt endless.

Every red light.

Every turn.

Every second.

It all felt like something was standing between me and my daughter.

Lily was sitting in the back seat, quietly coloring in her notebook.

She had no idea that someone was trying to change her life.

Again.

I kept looking at her through the rearview mirror.

The little pink bracelet from the wedding was still on her wrist.

She had refused to take it off.

When I asked why, she simply said:

"Because it was supposed to be a happy day.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Vanessa had taken a memory that should have been beautiful and turned it into something painful.

But I refused to let her take anything else.

When I arrived at Thomas's office, he was already waiting near the entrance.

The moment he saw Lily, his expression softened.

"Daniel.""

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

He guided us into his conference room.

A thick file was sitting on the table.

I already hated the sight of it.

Thomas opened it.

"Vanessa filed for temporary guardianship.""

My hands curled into fists.

"On what grounds?""

He looked through the paperwork.

"She claims she has been a major caregiver in Lily's life and that your emotional state after the canceled wedding makes you temporarily unable to provide a stable environment.""

I stared at him.

"She said I'm unstable?""

"Yes.""

I almost laughed.

The woman who humiliated my daughter in front of hundreds of people was accusing me of being unstable.

Thomas continued.

"There are also accusations that you have been preventing Lily from maintaining a relationship with her future stepmother.""

I looked at the file.

"She is lying.""

"I know.""

Thomas's voice was calm.

"But the legal system requires evidence.""

I looked at the folder.

"What does she have?""

Thomas hesitated.

"Some photographs.""

"What photographs?""

He opened a few pages.

Pictures of Vanessa and Lily.

At the park.

Eating ice cream.

Opening presents.

Reading books.

Normal moments.

Moments I remembered.

Moments Vanessa had carefully collected.

"She is using these to show a bond.""

My stomach turned.

"She created those moments.""

"Yes.""

Thomas nodded.

"But from the outside, they look convincing.""

I looked toward the window.

This was what scared me.

Not the lies.

The lies were obvious to me.

What scared me was that Vanessa had prepared them.

She had built a fake story.

A story where she was the loving woman and I was the unreasonable father.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus.

*I found something about the man from Vanessa's messages. Call me.*

I stepped away from the table.

"Marcus?""

His voice was tense.

"Daniel, the man is Adrian Blake.""

I frowned.

The name sounded familiar.

"Who is that?""

"Someone who specializes in high-conflict custody cases.""

My heart sank.

"An attorney?""

"Not exactly.""

A pause.

"He's a private consultant. He helps people build cases.""

I looked at Lily.

"What kind of cases?""

"Cases where someone wants to make another parent look dangerous.""

The room suddenly felt colder.

Vanessa wasn't reacting.

She was attacking.

She had known exactly what she would do if I discovered the truth.

"Find everything about him.""

"I already am.""

I ended the call.

When I returned to the table, Thomas looked concerned.

"Was that related?""

I nodded.

"She had help.""

Thomas leaned back.

"That makes sense.""

"What do you mean?""

"People don't usually file something this organized overnight.""

I looked at the documents again.

The timeline was becoming clearer.

The wedding.

The agreement.

The trust fund.

The guardianship.

Everything was connected.

Vanessa had planned for failure.

She had a backup plan.

That night, I sat beside Lily while she ate dinner.

She was quieter than usual.

I hated seeing that.

A child should not know what court documents are.

A child should not wonder if someone is trying to take her away.

But I needed to be honest with her.

"Sweetheart?""

She looked up.

"Yes, Daddy?""

"Someone is trying to make things difficult right now.""

Her little eyebrows pulled together.

"Because of me?""

My heart broke.

"No.""

I reached across the table.

"Never because of you.""

"But Vanessa doesn't want me?""

I froze.

Children notice everything.

Even when adults think they don't.

I chose my words carefully.

"I think Vanessa made choices that hurt our family.""

Lily looked down.

"Did I do something wrong at the wedding?""

I immediately moved beside her.

"No.""

My voice became firm.

"Lily, look at me.""

She looked up.

"You wanted to share cake. You wanted everyone to be happy. That is not wrong.""

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I just wanted a mommy.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"I know.""

And that was the hardest part.

Because Lily wasn't asking for perfection.

She was asking for love.

The next morning, we went to court.

I had been in business meetings with executives.

I had negotiated contracts worth millions.

But nothing had ever made me feel as nervous as walking into that courtroom.

Because this wasn't about money.

This wasn't about my company.

This was about my daughter.

Vanessa arrived with Adrian Blake.

She wore a simple dress.

No dramatic makeup.

No expensive jewelry.

She looked exactly like the kind of person people wanted to believe.

Kind.

Responsible.

Caring.

It made me angry.

Not because of how she looked.

Because I knew the truth hidden underneath.

She saw me looking at her.

For a moment, she smiled.

Not a warm smile.

A confident one.

A message.

She believed she could win.

Before the hearing began, she approached me.

"Daniel.""

I didn't answer.

She lowered her voice.

"You don't have to do this.""

I looked at her.

"You're right.""

She seemed surprised.

"You can stop.""

I shook my head.

"You can stop.""

Her expression changed.

"Daniel, think carefully.""

"I have been thinking carefully since the moment I saw my daughter crying on the floor.""

Her jaw tightened.

"You are making me look like a monster.""

"No.""

I looked directly at her.

"You did that yourself.""

Adrian stepped between us.

"Daniel, I suggest you avoid emotional statements.""

I looked at him.

"And I suggest you stop helping people hurt children.""

His expression remained calm.

But his eyes changed.

He knew.

He knew exactly what he was involved in.

Inside the courtroom, the judge reviewed the documents.

Vanessa's attorney spoke first.

"Your Honor, Ms. Collins has been an important figure in this child's life.""

I listened.

They described every birthday.

Every outing.

Every photograph.

Every carefully selected moment.

Then Thomas stood.

"Your Honor, we believe those moments do not show the complete picture.""

He presented the wedding footage.

The courtroom became silent.

The video played.

Everyone watched as Lily approached Vanessa with cake.

Everyone watched as Vanessa grabbed her.

Everyone watched as the cake hit my daughter's face.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

Then Thomas played the second video.

The conversation with Rachel.

The room changed.

The judge's expression became serious.

After the hearing ended, we were told a temporary decision would come soon.

Outside the courtroom, Vanessa approached me.

She looked different now.

Angry.

"You ruined everything.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

She stepped closer.

"You think you won?""

I didn't respond.

She smiled coldly.

"This isn't over.""

Then she leaned closer and whispered:

"You still don't know the truth about Lily's mother.""

I froze.

"What did you say?""

But Vanessa was already walking away.

I watched her disappear down the hallway.

Because suddenly, the fight wasn't only about what Vanessa wanted from my daughter.

It was about a secret from the past.

A secret involving the woman Lily and I had lost.

My late wife.

May you like

And whatever Vanessa knew...

She had been saving it for the moment she needed the biggest weapon.
