Chapter 2: The Picture She Never Wanted Me To See
I stared at my phone screen while the entire ballroom waited.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Lily was still wrapped around me, her small hands gripping the back of my jacket like letting go would make everything disappear. My guests were watching. Vanessa was watching.
But the name on my phone made my stomach twist.
*Mrs. Carter — Lily's kindergarten teacher.*
Why would she be calling me now?
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
Her voice was quiet and nervous.
"Mr. Hayes, I'm sorry to disturb you today. I know this is your wedding, but I saw something online and I thought you needed to know.""
I looked around the room.
"Can you send me whatever you saw?""
"I already did.""
A second later, another notification appeared.
A photo.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
It was a screenshot from a private conversation.
Vanessa's name was at the top.
The messages were between her and someone saved as *Rachel*.
My eyes moved across the screen.
I can't wait until this wedding is over.
Once I'm married, Daniel will finally stop treating Lily like she's the most important person in the world.
Another message followed.
I need him focused on me. That little girl has controlled his life for years.
I stopped breathing.
The room around me disappeared.
There was more.
Don't worry. After we move in, I'll make sure Daniel understands that raising a child isn't my responsibility.
Then another message.
He thinks I'm marrying him because I love his daughter. That's the funniest part.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
I felt Lily's head against my shoulder.
The little girl who had spent weeks asking if Vanessa would like her.
The little girl who had carefully picked flowers for Vanessa's bouquet.
The little girl who had asked me if her new stepmother would still want her around.
And this woman had been pretending the entire time.
"Mr. Hayes?"" Mrs. Carter asked softly.
I forced myself to answer.
"Where did you get this?""
"One of my former students' parents saw it. Vanessa accidentally posted part of the conversation publicly before deleting it.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you for telling me.""
After I ended the call, I didn't move.
My brother, Marcus, walked toward me slowly.
"Daniel?""
I handed him the phone.
His expression changed within seconds.
"What is this?""
I didn't answer.
Because I already knew.
This wasn't a mistake.
This wasn't one bad moment.
This wasn't a bride losing control.
This was a person revealing what she had been hiding.
Vanessa noticed our expressions.
She immediately stepped forward.
"What happened?""
Nobody answered.
Her eyes moved to my phone.
Then to Marcus.
Then back to me.
"Daniel?""
I looked at her.
"Who is Rachel?""
The color drained from her face.
"What?""
"Who is Rachel?""
The silence that followed told me everything.
A few guests exchanged confused looks.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
I lifted the phone.
"Then explain this.""
I walked closer and showed her the screen.
She glanced at it.
For one second, fear crossed her face.
Then she recovered.
"You went through my private messages?""
"No.""
My voice was calm.
"Your secret found its way to me.""
She looked around.
Suddenly, she wasn't the confident bride anymore.
She was someone trapped.
"Daniel, you can't believe everything you see online.""
"You're right.""
I nodded.
"That's why I want to hear you explain it.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lily lifted her head from my shoulder.
"Daddy?""
I looked down.
Her face was still covered in frosting.
But her eyes were filled with fear.
"Are we going home?""
That question destroyed me.
Not because she asked.
Because she thought she had done something wrong.
I kissed the top of her head.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, don't do this.""
I looked at her.
"Do what?""
"Destroy everything because of one misunderstanding.""
I stared at her.
"Was it a misunderstanding when you said my daughter controls my life?""
Her face tightened.
"That's not what I meant.""
"Was it a misunderstanding when you said you didn't want responsibility for her?""
"I was frustrated.""
"Was it a misunderstanding when you said you were waiting until after the wedding to change things?""
She stayed silent.
The room became unbearable.
My mother, who had been sitting near the front table, stood up.
"Vanessa.""
Everyone looked at her.
My mother's voice was quiet.
But disappointed.
"Did you really think nobody would find out?""
Vanessa looked at her.
"You don't understand.""
"No," my mother said.
"I understand perfectly.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
"This is unfair. Everyone is acting like I'm some monster.""
Nobody responded.
Because nobody needed to.
The evidence was sitting in my hand.
She turned back to me.
"Daniel, please.""
The word sounded strange coming from her.
Please.
After she had crushed a little girl's happiness in front of everyone.
I looked at Lily.
Then at the wedding decorations.
The flowers.
The cake.
The chairs arranged for a celebration that would never happen.
A few hours earlier, I believed I was starting a new chapter.
Now I realized I was escaping one.
"I loved you.""
Vanessa's expression softened.
For a moment, I saw the woman I thought I knew.
But then I remembered the messages.
"I really did.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Then don't throw that away.""
I shook my head.
"You threw it away when you decided my daughter was something standing between you and me.""
She looked angry now.
"You always choose her.""
The words came out before she could stop them.
The entire room heard.
And Vanessa immediately froze.
Because she knew.
She had finally said the truth out loud.
I stared at her.
"Yes.""
My voice was steady.
"I will always choose my daughter.""
Lily hugged me tighter.
Vanessa looked around the room, searching for someone to defend her.
Nobody did.
The wedding planner quietly approached.
"Mr. Hayes, what should we do with the reception?""
I looked at the ballroom one last time.
"Cancel everything.""
The guests slowly began leaving.
Whispers followed Vanessa everywhere.
But I didn't care.
My only concern was getting Lily home, cleaning the frosting from her hair, and making her understand something important.
She wasn't the reason my wedding ended.
She was the reason I finally saw the truth.
That night, after Lily fell asleep, I sat alone in the living room.
The house felt different.
Quieter.
Safer.
But I couldn't stop thinking about one thing.
How long had Vanessa been pretending?
I looked at the screenshot again.
There was one message I hadn't noticed before.
A message sent just three days before the wedding.
My heart stopped when I read it.
Once Daniel signs the new paperwork after the ceremony, everything will belong to me.
I sat up slowly.
New paperwork?
I had no idea what she was talking about.
Then my email notification appeared.
A document had been sent to me earlier that morning.
The sender's name made my blood run cold.
It was Vanessa's attorney.
