Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Plan
I stood frozen in Marcus's office, the phone pressed against my ear.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
The voice on the other end knew my name.
Knew Emily.
Knew Vanessa.
And most importantly, he knew something I didn't.
"Who are you?"" I asked again.
The man didn't answer immediately.
Instead, I heard a quiet laugh.
"You really don't remember me, do you?""
My eyebrows tightened.
"Should I?""
"You should remember the people who were around you when your life changed.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Stop playing games.""
The man's voice became colder.
"Your wife was closer to the truth than you ever realized.""
I looked at Marcus.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
He mouthed, "Who is it?""
I shook my head.
The stranger continued.
"Emily discovered what Vanessa was doing.""
My heart stopped.
"What did you say?""
"Your wife knew.""
I stood up.
"How do you know my wife?""
A pause.
Then:
"Because I helped her.""
The line went silent.
Before I could ask another question, the call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Unknown number.
No trace.
No information.
Nothing.
Marcus stood.
"Daniel.""
I looked at him.
"Someone knew Emily.""
"What did they say?""
I repeated everything.
When I finished, Marcus looked troubled.
"This is bigger than Vanessa.""
I nodded.
"I know.""
But I also knew something else.
Vanessa had not randomly entered my life.
Someone had guided her.
Someone had helped her.
And now that I had discovered the truth, someone was trying to scare me into stopping.
The next morning, Thomas called.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
His tone immediately worried me.
"What happened?""
"The court reviewed the evidence from yesterday.""
I waited.
"The judge denied Vanessa's temporary guardianship request.""
I exhaled.
For the first time in days, I felt a little relief.
"Good.""
"There's more.""
My relief disappeared.
"What?""
"Vanessa withdrew the petition before the official decision was entered.""
I frowned.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because she knew she would lose.""
I walked toward the window.
"Then why file it?""
Thomas paused.
"Sometimes the goal isn't winning.""
I understood.
It was a test.
A warning.
A way to see how far she could push me.
"She wanted to scare me.""
"Exactly.""
I looked outside.
The world continued like nothing had happened.
Cars moved.
People walked.
Everyone lived normal lives.
But my family had been turned into a battlefield.
That afternoon, Vanessa appeared outside my office building.
I saw her through the glass doors.
She wasn't alone.
Adrian Blake stood beside her.
I immediately felt anger.
Not fear.
Anger.
I walked outside.
"What do you want?""
Vanessa looked tired.
Not sorry.
Tired.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
"No.""
She looked surprised.
"No?""
"You had plenty of opportunities to talk.""
Her expression hardened.
"You don't understand what is happening.""
"Then explain.""
Adrian stepped forward.
"This conversation is unnecessary.""
I looked at him.
"You have been investigating my family.""
His face remained calm.
"I have been providing legal consultation.""
"For what?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa interrupted.
"Daniel, I made mistakes.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
Mistakes.
That was the word she chose.
"You hurt my daughter.""
Her eyes moved away.
"I know.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You don't.""
The silence between us grew.
Then Vanessa said something I didn't expect.
"I was afraid.""
I stared at her.
"Afraid of what?""
She swallowed.
"Of never being enough.""
For one second, I saw the person I thought I knew.
Someone insecure.
Someone scared.
But then I remembered Lily crying.
Fear did not excuse cruelty.
"You were afraid of a child?""
Her face tightened.
"She had everything.""
I stared at her.
"She had me.""
"Exactly.""
The word came out quietly.
And that was when I understood.
Vanessa didn't want love.
She wanted ownership.
She didn't want to join our family.
She wanted to become the center of it.
"Leave us alone.""
She looked hurt.
"Daniel.""
"No.""
I stepped back.
"You lost the right to explain yourself when you made my daughter feel unwanted.""
I turned around.
But before I left, Adrian spoke.
"Be careful.""
I stopped.
I looked back.
"Is that a threat?""
"No.""
His expression remained neutral.
"It's advice.""
I stared at him.
"People who know too much sometimes create problems for themselves.""
I smiled coldly.
"People who hurt children usually create bigger ones.""
I walked away.
That night, I received another package.
No sender.
Just my name written on the front.
My first thought was fear.
My second was curiosity.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a small flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
*Emily wanted you to see this when you were ready.*
My hands shook.
I connected it to my laptop.
A video appeared.
The date was two weeks before Emily died.
My heart raced.
Because I saw her.
My wife.
Alive.
Sitting at a desk.
Looking directly into the camera.
I couldn't breathe.
"Daniel.""
Her voice filled the room.
"If you are watching this, then something happened that made you look for answers.""
I covered my mouth.
Emily continued.
"I wanted to tell you everything myself, but I was afraid.""
Afraid.
That word again.
She looked down.
"Someone has been trying to access Lily's trust.""
My eyes widened.
"I discovered documents. Conversations. Plans.""
She paused.
"And the person I suspected was not someone I expected.""
I leaned closer.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"Daniel, if Vanessa Collins is involved, do not trust her.""
My heart stopped.
Vanessa.
My wife continued.
"She was not honest about why she came into our lives.""
I felt sick.
Because Emily knew.
She knew before I did.
Then Emily said something that changed everything.
"She was introduced to you by someone you trust.""
The video glitched.
I leaned closer.
"Who?""
Emily looked frightened.
Then she whispered:
"The person who helped me uncover this was...""
The screen froze.
A loading symbol appeared.
Then the video ended.
I stared at the black screen.
No name.
No answer.
Just one unfinished sentence.
I replayed it.
Again.
Again.
Nothing.
Marcus called after I sent him the file.
"I checked the video.""
"And?""
"Daniel, it's real.""
I closed my eyes.
"What about the ending?""
"Damaged.""
"Can you recover it?""
"I'll try.""
I looked at the paused image of Emily.
"She knew.""
Marcus was quiet.
Then he said:
"Daniel, there's something else.""
"What?""
"I found out who originally introduced Vanessa to you.""
My body went still.
"Who?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then answered:
"Someone from Emily's family.""
I felt the room spin.
"No.""
"Daniel—"
"No.""
Because there was only one person.
One person who had always supported me.
One person who had always said they wanted me to be happy.
One person who had been there after Emily died.
My stomach tightened.
"Tell me the name.""
Marcus finally said:
"Emily's mother.""
I couldn't move.
