Chapter 7: The Truth About Lily's Mother
For the entire drive home, I couldn't stop hearing Vanessa's words.
*You still don't know the truth about Lily's mother.*
She knew exactly what she was doing.
She had waited until the courtroom.
Until I was already exhausted.
Until I thought I finally had control of the situation.
Then she dropped the one name that could still break me.
My wife.
Lily's mother.
Emily.
The woman I lost three years ago.
The woman whose memory I protected every single day.
I kept telling myself Vanessa was just trying to manipulate me.
That she was desperate.
That she would say anything to win.
But there was one problem.
Vanessa had known things about my life that I had never told her.
And that scared me.
When I got home, Lily was sitting on the couch drawing.
She looked up immediately.
"Daddy?""
I forced a smile.
"Hey, princess.""
She studied my face.
"Did the judge say I have to leave?""
My heart shattered.
I walked over and sat beside her.
"No.""
I wrapped my arm around her.
"You are staying with me.""
She relaxed slightly.
"But Vanessa is angry.""
I looked down.
"Yes.""
"Because she doesn't want me?""
I didn't answer right away.
Because I didn't want my daughter to carry another adult's cruelty.
Instead, I asked:
"Why do you think that?""
She shrugged.
"Because she always looked different when you weren't there.""
My breath caught.
"What do you mean?""
Lily stared at her drawing.
"When Daddy was around, she smiled.""
She paused.
"But when it was just us, she would tell me to be quiet.""
My entire body went still.
"She told you that?""
Lily nodded.
"Sometimes.""
"How many times?""
She looked nervous.
"I don't know.""
I gently held her hand.
"Lily, you can tell me anything.""
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she whispered:
"She said I made you forget about her.""
The room felt colder.
I closed my eyes.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa believed.
My daughter wasn't family to her.
She was competition.
That night, after Lily went to sleep, I called Mrs. Whitmore.
She answered quickly.
"Daniel?""
"I need to ask you something about Emily.""
There was a pause.
"Is this about Vanessa?""
"Yes.""
Another silence.
Then:
"I wondered when that would come up.""
I sat up.
"What does that mean?""
Mrs. Whitmore sighed.
"Daniel, there are things about Emily's family that you were never told.""
My chest tightened.
"Why?""
"Because Emily asked us not to tell you unless it became necessary.""
I froze.
"Emily knew?""
"Yes.""
"Knew what?""
Mrs. Whitmore was quiet.
Then she said:
"Emily suspected someone was trying to access Lily's trust.""
I stood up.
"What?""
"Before she passed away, Emily became concerned about people around her.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Who?""
"She never named anyone.""
"Mrs. Whitmore.""
My voice became urgent.
"I need the truth.""
She exhaled.
"Emily created a letter for Lily.""
"A letter?""
"Yes.""
"Where is it?""
"With me.""
My heart raced.
"Why didn't you give it to me?""
"Because the instructions were specific.""
"What instructions?""
Mrs. Whitmore lowered her voice.
"Emily wanted Lily to receive it only if someone attempted to interfere with her future.""
I couldn't speak.
The room suddenly felt filled with ghosts.
Emily had known.
Somehow, she had known there might be a day when someone would try to take advantage of our daughter.
The next morning, I went to Mrs. Whitmore's office.
She handed me a small envelope.
My wife's handwriting was on the front.
*For Lily. When she is old enough to understand.*
I stared at it.
My hands shook.
"I can't believe she knew.""
Mrs. Whitmore looked at me sadly.
"Emily was very observant.""
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Not a legal document.
Not a warning.
Just a mother's words.
I read it silently.
My sweet Lily,
If you are reading this, something happened that made the people protecting you believe you needed these words.
First, I want you to know one thing.
You were the greatest gift of my life.
I stopped reading.
My vision blurred.
I wiped my eyes and continued.
Your father loves you more than anything in this world. Never let anyone make you believe you are a burden because you are loved.
I had to stop again.
Because those words were exactly what Lily needed to hear.
Then I reached the part that made my heart stop.
I worry that someday someone may see what was meant for you and mistake it for something they deserve.
My breathing changed.
Emily knew.
Money can attract people who do not understand love. Please make sure Lily is surrounded by people who choose her heart before anything else.
I folded the letter carefully.
Mrs. Whitmore watched me.
"There's more.""
She handed me another page.
This one was not from Emily.
It was a note attached by her parents.
*Emily discovered unusual inquiries regarding Lily's trust before her death.*
I looked up.
"Who made those inquiries?""
Mrs. Whitmore hesitated.
Then she answered.
"We believe it was someone connected to Vanessa.""
The anger came instantly.
"Connected how?""
"We don't know.""
"Find out.""
She nodded.
"I already started.""
On my way home, I received a call from Marcus.
"Daniel, I found something.""
"What?""
"You need to come see this.""
An hour later, I was sitting in Marcus's office.
He placed a folder in front of me.
"I tracked Adrian Blake.""
I opened it.
The first page showed his history.
Private consultant.
Financial investigations.
Family disputes.
Then I saw a familiar name.
My heart stopped.
"What is this?""
Marcus looked serious.
"Adrian worked with someone before Vanessa.""
"Who?""
He slid another page across the desk.
I read the name.
And everything inside me went cold.
*Emily Hayes.*
I stared at him.
"No.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Daniel, I think Vanessa isn't the first person Adrian helped investigate Lily's trust.""
My hands went numb.
"That's impossible.""
"Look at the dates.""
I did.
The records were from before Emily died.
I couldn't understand.
Why would my wife ever work with someone like Adrian?
Unless...
Unless I had misunderstood everything.
Unless there was something Emily had hidden from me.
I stood up.
"Where is Adrian now?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Why?""
"Because I need answers.""
Before I could leave, my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice responded.
"Daniel Hayes.""
I froze.
"Who is this?""
The man laughed softly.
"You've been looking into things that were supposed to stay buried.""
My grip tightened.
"Who are you?""
The voice became colder.
"The person who knows why Emily was really afraid.""
My heart stopped.
May you like
Then he said:
"And the person who knows why Vanessa chose you.""
