Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wanted My Daughter's Life
I watched the video three times.
The first time, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
The second time, I searched for some explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
Some missing piece that would make Vanessa's words less cruel than they sounded.
The third time, I stopped looking for excuses.
Because there weren't any.
The woman sitting in that video wasn't confused.
She wasn't overwhelmed by becoming a stepmother.
She wasn't struggling to adjust.
She was calculating.
And my daughter was the thing standing in her way.
I sat alone in the dark living room, staring at the frozen image of Vanessa's smile.
That smile haunted me.
It was the same smile she wore when she brought Lily ice cream after school.
The same smile she wore when she told me she was excited to become a family.
The same smile everyone believed was kindness.
But now I knew it was something else.
A mask.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Marcus.
*Did you find out what the trust fund was about?*
I typed back.
*I found something worse.*
A few seconds later, my phone rang.
"Daniel, what happened?""
I played the video for him.
I didn't say anything while he watched.
When it ended, there was silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
"She was never planning to love Lily.""
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"She was planning to replace her.""
Marcus sighed.
"What are you going to do?""
I looked upstairs toward Lily's bedroom.
"I protect my daughter.""
The next morning, I called my attorney.
His name was Thomas Reed.
He had represented my family for more than fifteen years.
When he arrived, he didn't waste time with small talk.
He sat across from me at the dining table while I placed every piece of evidence in front of him.
The messages.
The agreement.
The trust documents.
The video.
Thomas adjusted his glasses.
"Daniel, this is serious.""
"I know.""
"No, I mean legally serious.""
He tapped the video file.
"If this recording is authentic, it changes everything.""
"Can she still try to claim anything?""
Thomas shook his head.
"The marriage never happened. She has no legal standing as a spouse.""
"But she tried.""
"Yes.""
He looked at the documents.
"And that's what concerns me.""
I leaned forward.
"What do you mean?""
"Someone doesn't create this many steps unless they have been planning for a long time.""
The words stayed with me.
Planning.
That was the one word that kept appearing.
Every lie.
Every smile.
Every conversation.
Everything had been part of a plan.
"Can she come after Lily's trust?""
Thomas closed the folder.
"Not directly. But if she believed gaining influence over you or your daughter was possible, she may have thought she could find a way.""
My jaw tightened.
"She never loved us.""
Thomas didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That afternoon, I picked Lily up from school.
Usually, she ran toward me.
Usually, she dropped her backpack and jumped into my arms.
But that day, she walked slowly.
Her teacher, Mrs. Carter, followed behind her.
"Mr. Hayes?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"I wanted to tell you something.""
Lily looked at her shoes.
Mrs. Carter lowered her voice.
"Before the wedding, Lily was very worried.""
My chest tightened.
"Worried about what?""
Mrs. Carter glanced at Lily.
"She told me she thought Vanessa didn't like her.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What?""
Mrs. Carter nodded.
"She said Vanessa would get quiet whenever you hugged her.""
I looked at Lily.
She immediately looked away.
I knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart, why didn't you tell me?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I thought you would be sad.""
That sentence broke something inside me.
A child had been carrying pain because she was trying to protect me.
"Lily.""
I held her hands.
"You never have to hide something that hurts you just to make me happy.""
She whispered:
"I didn't want you to lose Vanessa.""
I closed my eyes.
Because she still cared about the person who had hurt her.
That was the kind of heart my daughter had.
She wasn't cruel.
She wasn't selfish.
She was just a child who wanted everyone to love each other.
I hugged her.
"You could never make me lose someone who truly loves you.""
That evening, something unexpected happened.
A knock came at the front door.
When I opened it, I saw Vanessa.
My first instinct was anger.
But then I noticed something.
She wasn't alone.
Her father stood beside her.
Richard Collins.
A respected businessman who had always treated me like family.
I hadn't spoken to him since the wedding.
"Daniel," he said quietly.
I didn't invite them in.
"What do you want?""
Vanessa looked down.
Her confidence was gone.
Her father stepped forward.
"I owe you an explanation.""
I stared at him.
"Do you?""
Richard looked ashamed.
"I didn't know about all of this.""
I studied his face.
"Your daughter planned to take control of my daughter's trust.""
His expression changed.
"What?""
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"Dad, that's not what happened.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Then explain.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time, someone else was demanding answers from her.
I watched her carefully.
She looked scared.
Not because she was sorry.
Because she had lost control.
Richard looked back at me.
"I knew she wanted a comfortable life. I knew she was excited about marrying you. But I never knew she was doing this.""
I didn't respond.
Because part of me understood.
Parents don't always know who their children become when nobody is watching.
Richard lowered his voice.
"Daniel, I found something after the wedding.""
My attention sharpened.
"What?""
He reached into his coat and handed me a small envelope.
"I found it in Vanessa's office.""
Vanessa's face changed instantly.
"Dad, don't.""
Richard looked at her.
"I should have checked what kind of person my daughter was becoming.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed conversation.
Not with Rachel.
Someone else.
A man whose name I didn't recognize.
The first message was from Vanessa.
*The wedding didn't go as planned. Daniel found out too soon.*
The reply came moments later.
*Then move to Plan B.*
I read the next message.
And my blood went cold.
*If you can't get the trust through marriage, make him look unstable.*
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Vanessa didn't speak.
Richard looked horrified.
"I don't know who that man is.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who is he?""
She remained silent.
"Who is he?""
Her eyes moved toward the floor.
Then she whispered:
"Someone who can make your life very difficult.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because this wasn't over.
Not even close.
I thought Vanessa's plan had been about money.
I thought she wanted control.
But now I realized something worse.
She had another plan.
One that didn't require becoming my wife.
My phone suddenly rang.
Thomas.
I answered immediately.
"Thomas?""
His voice was urgent.
"Daniel, I need you to come to my office right now.""
"Why?""
A pause.
Then:
"Because someone filed an emergency petition regarding Lily.""
My entire body went still.
"What petition?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"A request for temporary guardianship.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me.
And the small smile returning to her face told me everything.
She had a new plan.
May you like
And this time, she wasn't trying to enter my family.
She was trying to take my daughter away from me.
