Chapter 9: The Child Hidden Before Emma
Daniel stared at his father.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The words hung in the air.
*There was another child before her.*
Daniel had spent the entire night discovering secrets.
But this one felt different.
Because it wasn’t just about Sarah.
It wasn’t just about Emma.
It was about the Whitmore family itself.
“What child?””
Richard looked exhausted.
For the first time Daniel could remember, his father didn’t look like the powerful man who controlled everything.
He looked like someone who had been running from the past.
“Father.””
Richard slowly sat down.
“Her name was Claire.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Claire?””
Richard looked at the bracelet.
“Your sister.””
The room went completely silent.
Daniel felt like the floor disappeared beneath him.
“My sister?””
Emily stepped back.
“No.””
Richard looked at his daughter.
“Yes.””
Emily’s face turned pale.
“You told me Mom only had two children.””
Richard looked down.
“I lied.””
Daniel couldn’t process it.
His entire life.
His entire family.
Everything he knew was built on missing pieces.
“When?””
Richard took a breath.
“Before you were born.””
Daniel stared.
“You had a daughter before me?””
Richard nodded.
“A daughter who was never supposed to exist in the eyes of the world.””
Sarah looked horrified.
“Why?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation made Daniel angry.
“Why?””
Richard finally looked at him.
“Because Claire was not my biological child.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Your mother had her before we married.””
Emily looked shocked.
“Our mother?””
Richard nodded.
“She was young. She was afraid. She believed the Whitmore family would destroy her if they knew.””
Daniel shook his head.
“So she hid her?””
“No.””
Richard’s voice became softer.
“She tried to protect her.””
Daniel looked at the journal.
His mother’s words suddenly made more sense.
Protect the innocent child.
A child his family erased.
“What happened to Claire?””
Richard looked away.
“She disappeared.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Disappeared?””
Richard nodded.
“After your mother died.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“Someone took her?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Who?””
Richard looked at him.
“You already know.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“No.””
Richard’s eyes moved toward the door.
“Your grandfather.””
The answer shocked him.
Daniel had never met his grandfather.
The man had died before Daniel became an adult.
But he knew the stories.
A ruthless man.
The first person to build the Whitmore empire.
A man Richard spent his whole life trying to impress.
“My grandfather erased his own granddaughter?””
Richard nodded.
“He believed the Whitmore name could not be damaged.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“The Whitmore name.””
He repeated the words.
“The same excuse for everything.””
Richard didn’t argue.
Because he knew it was true.
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“Why did the bracelet end up with Emma?””
Richard answered.
“Because your mother gave it to Sarah.””
Everyone turned.
Sarah looked confused.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Your mother knew she was dying.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“She met Sarah?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before Emma was born.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I never knew who she was.””
“What?””
Sarah shook her head.
“An older woman found me after I left the hospital.””
Daniel listened carefully.
“She gave me the bracelet.””
Sarah touched it.
“She told me someone in the Whitmore family would always try to erase my daughter.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“She knew.””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother knew what this family was capable of.””
Daniel’s anger grew.
“She knew and still let me live a lie?””
Richard looked down.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me.””
He looked around the room.
“But all they did was leave me alone.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could.
Then Daniel noticed something.
Richard had said Claire disappeared after his mother died.
But his father knew too much.
“How do you know Claire disappeared?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because I searched for her.””
Daniel stared.
“You searched?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you find her?””
Richard was silent.
And Daniel realized.
“You know where she is.””
Richard looked away.
That was the answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is my sister?””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“She doesn’t want to be found.””
“How convenient.””
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I spent my entire life believing my family was normal.””
He pointed toward the journal.
“My mother wrote about protecting children.””
Then toward Richard.
“You erased them.””
Richard looked hurt.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Your mistakes had names.””
The words hit him.
Richard closed his eyes.
After a moment, he spoke.
“Claire is alive.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered:
“She’s alive?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“You just said she doesn’t want to be found.””
Richard looked at him.
“Because the last time I saw her…”
He stopped.
Daniel waited.
“What?””
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“She told me if I ever contacted her again, she would reveal everything.””
Sarah looked at the journal.
“Everything about what?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Richard looked at his son.
And for the first time, Daniel saw genuine regret.
“I made the same mistake with Claire that I made with Emma.””
The words shocked him.
“What mistake?””
Richard whispered:
“I believed controlling the truth would protect the family.””
Daniel’s anger softened slightly.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Because his father was finally admitting something.
The truth had never been about protection.
It had been about control.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
Maria appeared at the doorway.
Her face was frightened.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What happened?””
She held a small envelope.
“This was delivered for you.””
Daniel took it.
There was no name.
No address.
Only three words.
*For Daniel Whitmore.*
His hands tightened.
“Who brought this?””
Maria shook her head.
“A woman.””
Daniel froze.
“What woman?””
Maria looked toward Sarah.
“She said you would recognize her name.””
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman standing outside a small house.
An older version of someone Daniel had never met.
But somehow, he knew.
Because the eyes were familiar.
The smile.
The face.
The resemblance.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.
*Daniel,*
*If you found Emma, then you finally found the courage to uncover the truth.*
*I am sorry I left you with so many questions.*
*But your father was right about one thing.*
*Some secrets are dangerous.*
Daniel turned the photograph over.
The name at the bottom made his entire body go still.
*Claire Whitmore.*
Beneath her name were four more words.
*I have your mother’s letters.*
Daniel looked up.
Sarah was staring at the photo.
Richard had gone completely pale.
And Emily whispered:
“She knows everything.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Then I’m going to find her.””
Richard stood quickly.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“Why?””
Richard’s voice shook.
“Because Claire isn’t hiding from us.””
A pause.
“She’s hiding from the person who destroyed our family.””
Daniel stared.
“Who?””
Richard looked toward the dark window.
May you like
And said the name nobody expected.
“Michael Reed.””
