Chapter 2: The Woman Who Disappeared

Daniel forgot how to breathe.

For five years, he had imagined a thousand different reasons why Sarah had disappeared.

Maybe she had moved away.

Maybe she had fallen in love with someone else.

Maybe she had decided that his complicated world of money, companies, and expectations was too much.

But never once had he imagined this.

Never once had he imagined that she had been standing somewhere in the world raising his daughter.

His daughter.

The little girl in the hallway stared at him with wide, uncertain eyes.

She looked nothing like Victoria.

Nothing.

Her small fingers tightened around the stuffed rabbit she carried.

Daniel noticed the tiny details.

The nervous way she shifted her feet.

The way she looked toward Sarah before looking back at him.

The way she seemed to be searching his face for an answer.

Sarah stepped forward slowly.

“Emma…”

Her voice was soft.

The little girl looked up.

“Yes, Mommy?””

Sarah swallowed.

For a moment, Daniel saw something in her eyes.

Fear.

Regret.

Pain.

All the emotions of someone who had carried a secret for far too long.

Daniel looked at the woman he once loved.

Five years ago, Sarah had walked into his life wearing simple clothes and carrying a notebook full of ideas for a project at his company.

She had never treated him like a billionaire.

She treated him like a man.

And that was exactly why he had fallen for her.

“Sarah.””

Her name left his mouth like a question.

She looked at him.

“I know.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You know?””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew this day would come.””

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Victoria wiped her tears quickly.

“No, this cannot happen here.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

Victoria’s face changed.

Because she knew.

She knew there was no way to control the situation anymore.

“Daniel, please.””

He ignored her.

His eyes stayed on Sarah.

“Where were you?””

The question was simple.

But the pain behind it was not.

Sarah looked down.

“I tried to come back.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Sarah opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Emma looked between them.

She was too young to understand every word.

But she understood enough.

The adults around her were hurting.

“Mommy?”” she whispered.

Sarah immediately turned.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.””

But Daniel heard the way Sarah said it.

Like she had repeated those words a thousand times.

Like she had spent years convincing her daughter that everything was okay.

Daniel looked at Emma again.

“Does she know who I am?””

Sarah went silent.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She doesn’t.””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell her.””

“When?””

The question came out sharper than he intended.

Sarah flinched.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

He wasn’t angry at the child.

He wasn’t even sure who he was angry at anymore.

Five years of confusion.

Five years of believing he had been abandoned.

Five years of missing moments he could never get back.

Emma’s first steps.

Her first words.

Her first day of school.

All of it was gone.

“Daniel.””

Sarah’s voice softened.

“There is something you need to know.””

Victoria immediately interrupted.

“Sarah, don’t.””

Daniel looked at her.

That single sentence revealed more than Victoria wanted.

“Don’t what?””

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel walked closer.

“What are you afraid she’s going to tell me?””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“This is not the place.””

“No.””

Daniel looked around the mansion.

At the guests downstairs.

At the decorations celebrating a future that suddenly felt fake.

“This is exactly the place.””

Victoria shook her head.

“You’re making a scene.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“A scene?””

His voice lowered.

“You hid my daughter from me.””

Victoria looked away.

“Not everything is as simple as you think.””

Daniel turned back toward Sarah.

“Then explain.””

Sarah looked at Emma.

The little girl was still holding the photograph.

Daniel noticed it now.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

“Emma,” Sarah said gently, “why don’t you wait with Maria for a little while?””

The maid stepped forward.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Emma looked confused.

“But I wanted to meet him.””

Daniel’s heart broke.

Meet him.

Not see him.

Not come home to him.

Meet him.

Like he was a stranger.

He knelt down slowly.

For the first time in years, Daniel Whitmore, a man known for controlling billion-dollar decisions, had no idea what to say.

“Hi.””

Emma looked at him.

“Hi.””

Her voice was quiet.

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I’m Daniel.””

The little girl tilted her head.

“I know.””

He froze.

“You do?””

She nodded.

“Mommy has a picture of you.””

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Sarah looked away.

Emma continued.

“She says you’re very brave.””

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

The girl hugged her rabbit.

“She also said you’re kind.””

Daniel almost broke.

Because he didn’t feel kind.

Not tonight.

Tonight he felt like someone who had lost five years of his child’s life.

Emma looked at him carefully.

“Are you really my daddy?””

The question was so innocent.

So simple.

And it destroyed him.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“I am.””

Emma looked at him for several seconds.

Then she smiled.

A small, shy smile.

“Okay.””

Daniel blinked.

“Okay?””

She nodded.

“Mommy said you would look different from the pictures.””

A small laugh escaped him despite everything.

“How?””

“She said you would look older.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“Your mother said that?””

Emma nodded seriously.

“She said you would have more gray hair.””

Sarah covered her mouth, embarrassed.

For the first time that night, Daniel saw a glimpse of the woman he remembered.

The woman who used to tease him.

The woman who made him laugh.

Then the moment disappeared.

Because the pain returned.

Daniel stood.

“Why did you leave?””

Sarah looked at him.

This time, she didn’t avoid the question.

“Because Victoria came to see me.””

Daniel’s eyes moved immediately to Victoria.

Victoria’s face changed.

“Sarah.””

But Sarah continued.

“She told me you didn’t want the baby.””

Daniel went completely still.

“What?””

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“She told me you had already chosen your future. That your family would never accept me. That you would see Emma as a mistake.””

Daniel stared at Victoria.

Victoria shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Sarah laughed sadly.

“It was exactly what you said.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Did you?””

Victoria’s silence answered.

Daniel stepped back.

The woman he was supposed to marry.

The woman who had stood beside him for years.

Had destroyed the one relationship he never stopped mourning.

“Why?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I loved you.””

Daniel looked at her like he didn’t recognize her.

“You ruined my life because you loved me?””

“I was scared!””

Victoria’s voice rose.

“I was scared of losing you.””

“You didn’t lose me.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“You stole me.””

The words hit her.

Victoria looked away.

Sarah walked closer.

“There’s more.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What more?””

Sarah hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

The same envelope Daniel had seen earlier.

His name was written on the front.

Daniel took it.

The paper felt old.

“Why do you have this?””

Sarah’s eyes became wet.

“Because I wrote it five years ago.””

Daniel stared.

“I was going to give it to you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Sarah looked at Victoria.

Daniel understood.

Victoria had stopped her.

But why?

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Sarah’s.

His eyes moved across the first line.

Daniel,

I don’t know if you’ll ever forgive me for leaving…

His hands tightened around the paper.

Then another sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked toward Victoria.

Her phone was inside her purse.

She hesitated before answering.

“Hello?””

Her face changed immediately.

The color drained from it.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“What happened?””

Victoria slowly lowered the phone.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“He knows.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who knows?””

Victoria looked at Sarah.

Then at Emma.

Then at Daniel.

And for the first time all evening, Victoria looked truly afraid.

“Your father.””

Daniel froze.

His father.

The one man in the Whitmore family who had always controlled every decision.

The man who had built the empire.

The man who had always said family secrets were more dangerous than business failures.

Victoria whispered:

“He’s coming home.””

And Daniel knew one thing.

Whatever happened five years ago was bigger than a lie from his fiancée.

May you like

Someone else had been involved.

Someone who had spent years making sure Daniel never discovered the truth.
