Chapter 7: The Birth Record That Never Existed
Daniel read the message three times.
Not because he didn’t understand the words.
Because he couldn’t accept them.
*Ask Richard why he erased Emma’s birth record.*
His father had hidden the truth.
Victoria had hidden the truth.
Michael had hidden the truth.
But this was different.
A birth record was not a rumor.
It was not a conversation.
It was a document that proved a child existed.
A document that said:
Emma Whitmore was born.
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“Did Emma have a birth certificate?””
Sarah’s face changed.
That was the answer before she even spoke.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Where is it?””
Sarah looked down.
“I don’t have the original.””
“Why?””
“Because when I left the hospital, they told me there was an administrative problem.””
Daniel stared.
“Administrative problem?””
Sarah nodded.
“They said some information needed to be corrected.””
“What information?””
“My address. My emergency contact. Some details about the father.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What did they put for the father?””
Sarah was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Unknown.””
The word hit him.
Unknown.
Daniel Whitmore.
A man whose name was printed on skyscrapers.
A man whose company was known around the world.
Unknown.
His own daughter’s birth record claimed he didn’t exist.
“Who told you that?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I don’t remember.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t remember?””
“I was exhausted. Emma was premature. I was terrified.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“I was just trying to keep my baby safe.””
Daniel understood.
But understanding didn’t make the anger disappear.
Someone had erased him from his daughter’s life before he even knew she existed.
“Who had access to the hospital records?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Your father’s company had connections.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“My father.””
Before Sarah could respond, Victoria spoke from the corner.
“It wasn’t just him.””
Daniel turned.
Victoria looked exhausted.
But for the first time, she looked like someone who was ready to stop running.
“What do you mean?””
Victoria took a breath.
“I was involved.””
Sarah looked at her with disgust.
Daniel remained silent.
“Explain.””
Victoria walked toward the table.
“I helped change some information.””
Daniel stared.
“You changed my daughter’s records?””
“I was told it was temporary.””
“By who?””
Victoria looked away.
“Richard.””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
The anger inside him was almost overwhelming.
“Why?””
Victoria’s voice shook.
“Because he wanted Sarah gone.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“He wanted me gone?””
Victoria nodded.
“He believed Sarah was a threat.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“A threat?””
Victoria looked at him.
“He believed if you found out about Emma, everything would change.””
Daniel stared.
“It should have changed.””
“Yes.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“That was the problem.””
The room became silent.
Daniel understood.
His father had not been protecting him.
He had been protecting the life he built around him.
The companies.
The reputation.
The family name.
Everything except the truth.
“I want the hospital records.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I spent five years believing my daughter didn’t exist.””
He looked at Victoria.
“I spent five years believing the woman I loved abandoned me.””
Then he looked toward the stairs.
“I am done letting other people decide what I deserve to know.””
The next morning, Daniel arrived at Whitmore headquarters before sunrise.
The building was almost empty.
Normally, employees would arrive hours later.
But Daniel couldn’t wait.
He walked straight into the executive archives.
His security team followed.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Daniel looked at his head of security.
“I need every file connected to the hospital where Emma was born.””
The man hesitated.
“Sir?””
“Every file.””
His tone ended the discussion.
Within an hour, the archives department had been searched.
And Daniel found something.
A payment.
Not from the company.
From a private account.
He stared at the document.
The account holder name was hidden.
But the approval signature was clear.
Richard Whitmore.
Daniel leaned back.
His father had paid for the hospital arrangements.
Not unusual.
Until he saw the date.
The payment was made two days before Emma was born.
Before Sarah went into labor.
Before anyone supposedly knew there was a problem.
Daniel’s hands tightened.
He had planned everything.
A knock came at the door.
Daniel looked up.
His younger sister, Emily, walked in.
She rarely visited the company.
Which meant something was wrong.
“Daniel.””
He stood.
“What are you doing here?””
Emily looked nervous.
“I heard what happened.””
Daniel frowned.
“How?””
She looked away.
“Everyone knows.””
Daniel sighed.
Of course.
The Whitmore family was built on rumors.
“What do you know?””
Emily sat down.
“More than I wanted to.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“Tell me.””
Emily hesitated.
Then:
“I knew about Sarah.””
Daniel froze.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Not everything.””
“How much?””
Emily looked ashamed.
“I knew Dad wanted her gone.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“And you said nothing?””
Emily looked down.
“I was twenty-four.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I was scared too.””
Daniel stared.
“Everyone was scared.””
Emily looked at him.
“Because Dad wasn’t just controlling.””
She paused.
“He was dangerous.””
Daniel went quiet.
“What happened to Sarah wasn’t the first time.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“What does that mean?””
Emily looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
“Five years ago, someone inside the company found evidence of illegal financial activity.””
Daniel remembered Victoria’s words.
“My father.””
Emily nodded.
“Dad handled it.””
“Handled it how?””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel studied her.
“But?””
“But the person who found it disappeared.””
The room went silent.
Daniel felt the pieces connecting.
Sarah.
The birth records.
The threats.
The hidden files.
Everything led back to one thing.
His father.
Then his phone rang.
Sarah.
He answered immediately.
“Sarah?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel, you need to come home.””
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Emma’s bracelet.””
Daniel looked down.
He remembered the engraving.
The strange message.
“I was there the night your daughter was born.””
“What about it?””
Sarah’s voice became quieter.
“I found where it came from.””
Daniel stood.
“Where?””
“It belonged to someone else before Emma.””
His heart started beating faster.
“Who?””
Sarah took a breath.
“Daniel…”
He heard fear in her voice.
“Tell me.””
The answer came softly.
“It belonged to your mother.””
Daniel froze.
His mother.
A woman who died when he was a teenager.
A woman who had nothing to do with Emma’s birth.
Or so he thought.
Sarah continued.
“There’s a name engraved underneath the bracelet.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“What name?””
Silence.
Then Sarah whispered:
“The same name that was on the hospital record.””
Daniel felt the world shift.
“What are you talking about?””
Sarah’s voice broke.
“Daniel…”
She swallowed.
“Emma’s birth record wasn’t erased.””
A pause.
“It was replaced.””
Daniel stood completely still.
“Replaced with what?””
Sarah answered:
“Another child.””
His blood ran cold.
“Whose child?””
Sarah whispered:
“Your mother’s.””
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
A thousand questions raced through his mind.
But one terrified thought rose above the rest.
His father had not just hidden Emma.
He had hidden something about Daniel’s own family.
Something that had started before Emma was even born.

And somewhere inside the Whitmore mansion…
Was the missing piece of the truth.
