Chapter 4: The Night Everything Changed
Daniel spent the next ten minutes staring at the closed library door.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The mansion that had once felt like a symbol of success now felt like a courtroom.
And every person inside it was carrying a piece of evidence against him.
His eyes moved to Sarah.
She was standing near the window, staring into the dark garden.
The same garden where his daughter had waited for him.
The same place where five years of lies had finally reached him.
“Sarah.””
She didn’t turn.
“I know what you’re going to ask.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Then answer before I ask.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had spent five years carrying a weight nobody else could see.
“What did my father mean?””
Sarah remained silent.
Daniel walked closer.
“He said there’s a reason you disappeared.””
She looked at him.
“There is.””
“Then tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
“I wanted to.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“I wanted to tell you. I was going to tell you. I tried to tell you.””
He looked around the room.
“But somehow, nobody ever did.””
Sarah lowered her gaze.
“You’re right.””
Daniel wasn’t expecting that.
She continued.
“I should have fought harder.””
“You should have trusted me.””
The words hurt her.
Because they were true.
Sarah looked at Emma.
The little girl was sitting beside Maria now, coloring in a small notebook the maid had given her.
“She was sick.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Sarah looked back at him.
“When I was pregnant, I found out there were complications.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Complications?””
“The doctors said there was a chance I could lose her.””
Daniel looked at Emma.
His daughter.
The child he never knew existed.
Sarah continued.
“I was terrified.””
Her voice became softer.
“I wanted you there.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Then why didn’t you call me?””
Sarah looked away.
“Because Victoria came first.””
The room went cold.
Daniel already knew the answer.
But he needed to hear it.
“What did she say?””
Sarah took a deep breath.
“She came to my apartment two days after I found out I was pregnant.””
The memory seemed painful.
“She looked different.””
“How?””
“Cold.””
Sarah stared at the floor.
“Victoria had always been kind to me before that. We weren’t close, but she was polite.””
Daniel listened carefully.
“But that day, she wasn’t the same person.””
Sarah’s hands tightened.
“She told me you had chosen her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know that now.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But back then, I was scared.””
Daniel said nothing.
Sarah continued.
“She told me your family would never accept me. She told me your father had already planned your future.””
She paused.
“And then she told me something worse.””
“What?””
Sarah looked directly at him.
“She said if I told you about the baby, she would make sure I lost everything.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“She threatened you.””
Sarah nodded.
“She said your father had powerful lawyers. She said they could make me look unstable. She said they could prove I wasn’t capable of raising a child.””
Daniel’s fists clenched.
“And you believed her?””
Sarah looked down.
“I was alone.””
The answer stopped him.
Because he understood.
She wasn’t saying she believed Victoria because she trusted her.
She believed her because she was afraid.
“I had no family nearby,” Sarah whispered.
“My job disappeared overnight.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Sarah nodded.
“Your company terminated my position.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why?””
Sarah looked toward the door Richard had left through.
“Your father’s orders.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Richard had controlled everything.
Sarah continued.
“I had no income. I was pregnant. I was scared. And then Victoria told me something that broke me.””
“What?””
Sarah’s voice became barely audible.
“She told me you didn’t love me.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“That wasn’t true.””
“I know.””
Sarah wiped her tears.
“But at the time, I didn’t know what was true anymore.””
Silence filled the room.
Daniel looked down.
Five years.
Five years believing Sarah abandoned him.
Five years believing he wasn’t wanted.
And all this time, she had been fighting alone.
But one question remained.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Sarah hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
“There’s more.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Before she could continue, Victoria suddenly spoke.
“You’re making it sound like I was the only person responsible.””
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood near the fireplace.
Her face was tear-stained.
But her expression had changed.
The fear was fading.
Something else was replacing it.
Defensiveness.
Daniel looked at her.
“Because you were the one who lied to me.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed at Sarah.
“She lied too.””
Sarah’s face changed.
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria stepped forward.
“You think Sarah is innocent because she disappeared with your child?””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.””
Sarah looked uncomfortable.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“She never told you everything.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“Is that true?””
Sarah didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation returned.
The same hesitation that had followed every secret tonight.
Daniel’s heart sank.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Sarah looked at Emma.
Then back at him.
“I didn’t leave because Victoria asked me to.””
Daniel waited.
“Then why?””
Sarah took a breath.
“Because someone tried to hurt Emma.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Sarah nodded.
“After I left the city, I started receiving messages.””
“What kind of messages?””
“Threats.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“From who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You never found out?””
“No.””
Sarah’s eyes became distant.
“But they knew everything.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did they say?””
Sarah looked at him.
“They said if you ever found us, Emma would be taken away.””
Daniel looked at his daughter.
His anger turned into something else.
Fear.
Real fear.
Because this was no longer about betrayal.
This was about someone targeting his child.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Sarah whispered.
“Because I thought you were part of it.””
Daniel froze.
The words hit harder than anything else.
“Me?””
“I didn’t know who to trust.””
Sarah’s voice broke.
“Everyone around you had power. Money. Connections.””
She looked at him.
“And I thought maybe you had chosen your family over us.””
Daniel stepped back.
He wanted to be angry.
But he couldn’t.
Because he knew his world.
He knew how dangerous his family could be.
Then a small voice interrupted.
“Daddy?””
Daniel turned.
Emma stood there holding her notebook.
She looked between the adults.
“Are you leaving?””
The question destroyed him.
“No.””
He immediately knelt.
“I’m not leaving.””
Emma studied him.
“Promise?””
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time that night, he made a promise without hesitation.
“I promise.””
She nodded.
Then she handed him the notebook.
Inside was a drawing.
Three people standing together.
A little girl.
A woman.
And a man.
Above them was a yellow sun.
Daniel looked closer.
At the top of the page were three words written in shaky handwriting.
“My family someday.””
His vision blurred.
He quickly looked away.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only silence.
Then a distorted voice spoke.
“You found her.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Who is this?””
The voice ignored him.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Daniel stood.
“Where are you?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“You really think finding your daughter means you know the truth?””
Daniel’s grip tightened.
“Tell me who you are.””
The voice lowered.
“Ask Sarah what happened the night Emma was born.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
Her face had gone completely white.
Then the voice said one final sentence.
“The child you found is not the only secret she kept from you.””
The call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone stared at him.
Sarah looked terrified.
Victoria looked shocked.
And Daniel realized something that made his blood run cold.
Five years ago, Sarah didn’t just disappear.
Someone had made sure she vanished.
May you like
And now that Daniel had found her…
Someone was afraid of what she might reveal.
