Chapter 5: The Secret Buried In The Hospital Records

Daniel barely slept that night.

The Whitmore mansion had hundreds of rooms, but for the first time in his life, the place felt unbearably small.

Every hallway reminded him of something he had missed.

The nursery that had never been built.

The family portraits that never included Emma.

The empty spaces where memories should have existed.

At 3:17 in the morning, Daniel stood alone in his office, staring at the old photograph Sarah had kept.

It was a picture of him from five years ago.

Before everything changed.

Before the lies.

Before he became a stranger to his own daughter.

A quiet knock came from the door.

Daniel turned.

Sarah stood there.

She looked exhausted.

“Can’t sleep?””

Daniel gave a small, humorless smile.

“Apparently, finding out I have a daughter doesn’t make it easier.””

Sarah stepped inside.

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

They were two people who had once known everything about each other.

Now they had to rebuild from nothing.

Daniel placed the photograph on the desk.

“Who called?””

Sarah looked away.

“You heard them.””

“I heard the threat.””

His eyes focused on her.

“But I didn’t hear the fear in your voice.””

Sarah’s expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“You know who it was.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel sighed.

“Sarah.””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t know who they are.””

“But?””

She hesitated.

“But I know what they’re talking about.””

Daniel stood.

“What happened the night Emma was born?””

Sarah looked at him.

The pain in her eyes told him the answer had been waiting for years.

“I was going to tell you.””

Daniel almost laughed.

Again.

Those words.

“I know.””

Sarah flinched.

“No, Daniel. This time you need to listen.””

He stopped.

Sarah walked toward the window.

“The night Emma was born was the worst night of my life.””

Daniel softened slightly.

“Tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“I went into labor early.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“How early?””

“Almost six weeks.””

His chest tightened.

“I was alone.””

The words hit him.

Sarah continued.

“I called the number I had for you.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Someone answered.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did they say?””

Sarah swallowed.

“They told me you weren’t available.””

Daniel stared.

“Who told you that?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked at him.

“But they knew my name.””

Silence.

Daniel walked closer.

“Sarah…”

“I was taken to the hospital.””

Her voice became quieter.

“And after Emma was born, a man came into my room.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did he want?””

Sarah looked down.

“He wanted me to sign papers.””

Daniel froze.

“What papers?””

“Documents saying I gave up all claims against the Whitmore family.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“And you signed?””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

A small amount of relief appeared in Daniel’s face.

“Good.””

“But I almost did.””

“Why?””

Sarah looked toward the hallway.

Toward the room where Emma slept.

“Because they brought her to me.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

“The baby.””

His expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

Sarah’s hands trembled.

“They told me if I didn’t sign, they would make sure I never saw her again.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“They threatened to take Emma.””

“Yes.””

Sarah nodded.

“I was terrified.””

“Who stopped them?””

Sarah became quiet.

Daniel waited.

Then she whispered:

“Your father.””

The answer made no sense.

“What?””

Sarah turned.

“Richard arrived.””

Daniel stared.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

Sarah looked away.

“He told them to leave.””

Daniel frowned.

“But he was involved.””

“He was.””

Sarah nodded.

“But he wasn’t the only one.””

Daniel felt a strange fear settle in his chest.

“Who else?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

“Sarah.””

She looked at him.

“I saw Victoria outside the hospital room.””

Daniel froze.

“Victoria?””

Sarah nodded.

“She was crying.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“She was.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“Victoria told me you disappeared.””

“I know.””

“She told me you wanted nothing to do with me.””

“I know.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why was she at the hospital?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because she was there before Richard.””

The room went silent.

Daniel felt like the walls were closing in.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah took a shaky breath.

“It means Victoria knew about Emma before you did.””

The words landed heavily.

Daniel turned away.

He needed a moment.

Because every answer created more questions.

His entire relationship with Victoria suddenly looked different.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every promise.

How much of it had been real?

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Sarah looked hurt.

“Because I tried.””

Daniel turned back.

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

He frowned.

“What?””

Sarah walked to the desk.

“I found your company email address.””

Daniel stared.

“You contacted me?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Your assistant replied.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“My assistant?””

“He said you didn’t want contact.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Who was my assistant?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Michael.””

Daniel froze.

Michael Reed.

His former executive assistant.

A man who had worked beside him for seven years.

A man who knew every detail of his schedule.

“Michael never told me.””

“I know.””

“How?””

Sarah reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a printed email.

Daniel grabbed it.

The message was short.

Sarah,

Mr. Whitmore has reviewed your message. He does not wish to be contacted regarding this matter. Please do not attempt further communication.

Daniel read it twice.

Then a third time.

His face changed.

“This isn’t my writing.””

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

“I never sent this.””

She became pale.

Daniel looked at the date.

Three years earlier.

The same year he had been promoted to CEO.

The same year his father had started pushing him toward Victoria.

Someone had been controlling information around him.

Someone close.

A sound came from the hallway.

Both of them turned.

Emma stood there.

Half asleep.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately softened.

“Yes?””

She rubbed her eyes.

“I had a bad dream.””

He walked toward her.

“What happened?””

She looked down.

“I dreamed someone took Mommy away.””

Daniel froze.

Sarah’s face changed.

Emma continued.

“Then I couldn’t find you.””

Daniel knelt.

“Hey.””

He gently held her shoulders.

“That won’t happen.””

She looked at him.

“Promise?””

Daniel nodded.

“I promise.””

Emma leaned into him.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

Not the lies.

Not the threats.

Not the secrets.

Just his daughter.

His little girl.

Then Daniel noticed something.

Emma wasn’t holding her stuffed rabbit anymore.

She had left it on the floor.

And attached to the rabbit’s collar was a tiny silver tag.

Daniel picked it up.

“What is this?””

Sarah looked over.

Her face immediately changed.

“Where did she get that?””

Daniel examined it.

It wasn’t a normal tag.

There were words engraved on the back.

A name.

And a date.

His blood ran cold.

Because the name wasn’t Emma’s.

It was his.

Daniel Whitmore.

And beneath it was a sentence.

A sentence that made Sarah cover her mouth.

“I was there the night your daughter was born.””

Daniel stared at the engraving.

“What does this mean?””

Sarah stepped closer.

Her face was filled with fear.

“I don’t know.””

But she did.

He could see it.

She knew something.

Something she had never told him.

Daniel looked at her.

“Sarah.””

She shook her head.

“I was hoping you’d never find that.””

“Why?””

Before she could answer, another sound echoed through the mansion.

A crash.

Glass breaking downstairs.

Daniel immediately turned toward the door.

Someone was inside.

But the security system hadn’t activated.

He looked at Sarah.

She whispered:

“Someone knows you found the truth.””

Daniel walked quickly into the hallway.

And as he reached the staircase, he saw a shadow moving near the front entrance.

A figure wearing a dark coat.

Running away.

Daniel rushed forward.

“Stop!””

The person turned for one second.

Just long enough for Daniel to see the face.

And his heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person who had broken into his mansion…

Was someone he trusted.
