Chapter 6: The Man Who Had Been Watching
Daniel stood frozen at the bottom of the staircase.
The figure was already gone.
The front door swung slowly in the cold night air.
But the face remained in his mind.
Michael Reed.
His former assistant.
The man who had managed his schedule.
The man who knew his meetings.
The man who had access to every private document in his life.
The man who had apparently lied to him for years.
“Daniel?””
Sarah’s voice pulled him back.
She reached the bottom of the stairs with Emma behind her.
Daniel immediately turned.
“Stay there.””
Sarah stopped.
“What happened?””
He looked toward the open door.
“Someone was inside.””
Her face turned pale.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Because saying the name made it real.
“Michael.””
Sarah’s expression changed.
“Michael?””
Daniel nodded.
“The man who told you I didn’t want contact.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“No…”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know him?””
“I saw him before.””
“When?””
Sarah hesitated.
“At the hospital.””
The anger in Daniel’s chest grew.
“Why was my assistant at the hospital when my daughter was born?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel walked toward the door.
But before he could step outside, the security alarm suddenly activated.
The mansion lights flashed.
A loud warning sound filled the halls.
Maria rushed in from the side entrance.
“Mr. Whitmore!””
Daniel turned.
“What happened?””
“The security system detected movement near the old storage wing.””
Daniel frowned.
“The old wing?””
That area of the mansion had been closed for years.
Nobody used it.
“Who has access?””
Maria looked nervous.
“Only family members and senior staff.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
Senior staff.
The list was getting shorter.
And more dangerous.
“Call the police.””
Maria nodded and left.
Sarah looked at him.
“You think Michael was looking for something.””
Daniel looked at the open door.
“I know he was.””
“What?””
He turned.
“People don’t break into a house like this to scare someone.””
Sarah looked toward Emma.
Daniel followed her gaze.
His anger immediately softened.
He lowered his voice.
“Take her upstairs.””
Sarah nodded.
But Emma didn’t move.
She looked at Daniel.
“Daddy?””
He knelt.
“Yes?””
“Is the bad person coming back?””
The question cut through him.
Daniel forced himself to stay calm.
“No.””
She looked uncertain.
“My mommy always says bad things come back.””
Daniel glanced at Sarah.
She looked away.
Because she knew Emma was right.
Daniel gently touched his daughter’s hair.
“Not this time.””
Emma stared at him.
“Because you’re here?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
Then Sarah took her hand and led her upstairs.
Daniel watched them disappear.
For years, he had thought success meant building something powerful.
A company.
A reputation.
A legacy.
But standing in that hallway, he understood something.
None of those things mattered if he couldn’t protect the people he loved.
Minutes later, Daniel entered the old storage wing.
The police had not arrived yet.
He had waited.
But not patiently.
The door was slightly open.
Inside, the room smelled like dust and old paper.
Boxes covered the shelves.
Family records.
Business documents.
Memories nobody touched anymore.
Daniel walked in carefully.
Then he saw it.
A drawer had been forced open.
Inside were old files.
One file was missing.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What were you looking for?””
He searched through the remaining papers.
Most were meaningless.
Old contracts.
Tax records.
Company documents.
Then he found something.
A folder hidden beneath the others.
No label.
No date.
Just his initials.
D.W.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were medical documents.
His hands tightened.
The first page was from a hospital.
The same hospital where Emma was born.
His eyes moved quickly.
Patient name.
Sarah Bennett.
Date.
Five years earlier.
Then he saw something that made him stop.
A second name.
Richard Whitmore.
Daniel’s father had been involved.
But beneath that was another signature.
Victoria Hale.
Daniel stared.
“What were you doing?””
He turned the page.
There were more documents.
Financial transfers.
Payments.
Private medical arrangements.
And one sentence highlighted in red:
"Ensure Daniel Whitmore remains unaware until further notice.""
Daniel felt sick.
Further notice.
Someone had planned his ignorance.
Someone had decided when he was allowed to know he was a father.
A sound came from behind him.
Daniel turned quickly.
Nobody.
The room was empty.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Who is this?””
No response.
Only breathing.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“Talk.””
A voice finally spoke.
“You’re looking in the wrong place.””
Daniel froze.
“Michael.””
The voice laughed softly.
“You always were too trusting.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Why did you lie to me?””
“Because you weren’t supposed to know.””
“Know what?””
Silence.
Then:
“The truth about your daughter.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“You helped hide her.””
“I helped protect her.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Protect her from who?””
Another silence.
Then Michael said:
“Your family.””
The call ended.
Daniel stood still.
The words echoed.
Your family.
Not Victoria.
Not Richard.
Family.
He immediately walked out.
He needed answers.
Not from Sarah.
Not from documents.
From the person who had been controlling everything.
Victoria.
He found her in the main sitting room.
She was alone.
The woman who had always looked perfect now looked exhausted.
Daniel placed the folder on the table.
Her face changed instantly.
She knew what it was.
“You found it.””
Daniel stared.
“You knew about this folder.””
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why did you help them?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was scared.””
“Everyone says that.””
His voice was cold.
“But nobody explains what they were scared of.””
Victoria looked at him.
“My father died because of the Whitmores.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
She laughed bitterly.
“My father worked for your family years ago.””
Daniel said nothing.
“He discovered something.””
“What?””
Victoria looked toward the window.
“Money was being moved through companies that weren’t supposed to exist.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What does that have to do with Sarah?””
“Everything.””
She looked at him.
“Your father didn’t want anyone investigating.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father wouldn’t—”
Victoria interrupted.
“You think you know him.””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t.””
Daniel looked at her.
“And you do?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with pain.
“I knew what he was capable of.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel studied her.
“Then why marry me?””
Victoria looked away.
At first, she didn’t answer.
Then she whispered:
“Because I thought if I stayed close to you, I could fix what happened.””
Daniel stared.
“You were never trying to build a future with me.””
Victoria cried.
“I was.””
“Then what was I?””
She looked at him.
And the answer broke something inside him.
“A chance to make things right.””
Daniel stepped back.
A chance.
Not love.
Not a partner.
A solution.
Before he could respond, Sarah rushed into the room.
Her face was terrified.
“Daniel.””
He turned.
“What happened?””
She held a small piece of paper.
“I found this in Emma’s room.””
Daniel took it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Three words were written.
WE KNOW EVERYTHING.
Below it was a photograph.
Daniel looked at it.
And his blood turned cold.
It was a picture of Emma.
Taken inside the mansion.
Tonight.
Someone had been watching them.
The entire time.
Sarah whispered:
“They’re not trying to hide anymore.””
Daniel stared at the photo.
His fear turned into determination.
“Good.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Good?””
Daniel folded the paper.
“For five years, they controlled the story.””
He looked toward the stairs where Emma was sleeping.
“Now they’re going to learn something.””
“What?””
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“That my daughter is not a secret anymore.””
At that exact moment, his phone received another message.
One sentence.
One name.
May you like
And a warning.
*Ask Richard why he erased Emma’s birth record.*
