Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew the Truth
At 9:00 the next morning, I entered the courthouse with Rachel, Victoria, and Sophie.
Daniel Mercer was already waiting outside Courtroom 14.
He was in his early sixties, with neatly combed gray hair and a dark navy suit. He carried no briefcase, only a thin leather folder.
When he saw us, he stood.
"Ms. Carter.""
I stopped.
"You're Daniel Mercer?""
"Yes.""
I looked at him carefully.
"Why did you send that document to Sophie?""
"Because she deserved to know the truth.""
"And what truth is that?""
He glanced at Victoria.
Then at Sophie.
"That her father has spent sixteen years trying to control a family trust that was never meant to belong to him alone.""
Victoria crossed her arms.
"That's not what you told me when Sophie was born.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
Her expression hardened.
"You told me the money was frozen.""
"It was.""
"You told me Liam couldn't access it.""
"He couldn't.""
"Then how did thirty million dollars disappear?""
Daniel opened his folder.
"Because I made a mistake.""
I stared at him.
"What kind of mistake?""
He looked directly at me.
"I trusted the wrong person.""
Before I could respond, the courtroom doors opened.
A clerk called our names.
Rachel touched my arm.
"Let's go.""
The hearing began at 9:30.
Liam sat at the opposite table with two attorneys.
He looked composed.
His dark suit was perfectly fitted. His watch caught the light whenever he moved his hand.
Khloe sat behind him.
She wore a black dress and oversized sunglasses, despite being indoors.
When Liam noticed me, his expression tightened.
He looked at my stomach.
Then at Sophie.
For a fraction of a second, something crossed his face.
Recognition.
Fear.
Perhaps even guilt.
But he quickly looked away.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
After the formalities, Liam's attorney began.
"Your Honor, this matter concerns a serious financial dispute involving an entity registered under the name of Ms. Olivia Carter.""
He presented the incorporation documents.
"Approximately thirty million dollars in family trust assets were transferred through this entity without proper disclosure.""
Rachel stood.
"Objection. The documents themselves show that the company was registered through an unauthorized filing.""
The judge looked at her.
"Do you have evidence?""
Rachel nodded.
"We have the testimony of the individual who notarized the filing, along with the original communications instructing her to use Ms. Carter's existing signature.""
Liam shifted in his chair.
His attorney continued.
"Our client disputes the authenticity of those communications.""
Rachel handed copies to the clerk.
"Then we welcome an independent forensic examination.""
The judge reviewed the papers.
"Proceed.""
Liam's attorney turned to the trust issue.
"Your Honor, the opposing party is attempting to introduce unrelated family matters into a straightforward financial investigation.""
Rachel stood again.
"These are not unrelated matters. The disputed funds originated in an account established for a minor beneficiary. The current investigation concerns the same trust assets and the same company.""
The judge looked toward Daniel.
"Mr. Mercer, you requested appointment as an independent guardian. Explain your involvement.""
Daniel stood.
"Your Honor, I served as an adviser to the original Hayes family trust. I was responsible for monitoring beneficiary distributions and ensuring compliance with the founder's instructions.""
"And why did you leave?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Because I discovered that certain transfers had been made without the required approvals.""
Liam's attorney stood.
"Objection. This is irrelevant.""
The judge raised a hand.
"Overruled for now. Continue.""
Daniel opened his folder.
"The original trust contained protected accounts for qualifying descendants. When Sophie Hayes was born, her grandfather established a thirty-million-dollar account for her benefit.""
Sophie sat perfectly still.
Her mother held her hand.
Daniel continued.
"Six weeks after Mr. Hayes died, the funds were transferred into an investment structure without the required independent approval.""
The judge looked at Liam.
"Did you authorize the transfer?""
Liam's attorney answered.
"My client denies any wrongdoing.""
Daniel nodded.
"I have the original authorization records.""
He handed them over.
The courtroom became quiet.
The judge reviewed the pages.
Then she looked up.
"These records show that Mr. Hayes signed the transfer authorization.""
Liam leaned toward his attorney.
The attorney whispered something.
Daniel continued.
"That transfer was the beginning of a series of transactions that eventually led to Carter Hayes Holdings.""
Rachel stood.
"And who was the beneficial owner of the original thirty million dollars?""
Daniel answered immediately.
"Sophie Hayes.""
The judge looked at Sophie.
"Is that correct?""
Sophie stood nervously.
"Yes, Your Honor.""
"Do you understand the nature of these proceedings?""
"Some of it.""
The judge softened her voice.
"That's all right.""
Sophie looked toward Liam.
Then she spoke.
"I just want to know why my father took the money that was supposed to be mine.""
The courtroom fell silent.
Liam looked down.
His attorney stood.
"Your Honor, my client has always intended to provide for his daughter.""
Sophie gave a small, bitter laugh.
"Then why did he never come to my birthday?""
The attorney had no answer.
The judge asked everyone to remain seated.
Then she turned toward Daniel.
"Mr. Mercer, where are the funds now?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Some remain in investment accounts. Some have been transferred through affiliated entities.""
"Can they be recovered?""
"Yes, potentially.""
"Then why hasn't that happened?""
Daniel looked toward Liam.
"Because I was prevented from accessing the original records.""
The judge raised her eyebrows.
"By whom?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Mr. Hayes's legal representatives.""
Liam finally stood.
"This is absurd.""
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Hayes, you will have an opportunity to respond. Sit down.""
He slowly lowered himself into his chair.
Rachel stood.
"Your Honor, we also request that the court recognize the potential beneficiary interests of Ms. Carter's unborn children and prevent any transfer that could compromise those interests.""
Liam's attorney immediately objected.
"Those children have not been born. There is no established beneficiary status.""
Daniel turned toward the judge.
"With respect, Your Honor, the original trust specifically anticipates unborn descendants.""
He handed over another document.
"This is the original family provision.""
The judge examined it.
Then she looked toward Rachel.
"Do you have medical confirmation of the pregnancy?""
Rachel nodded.
"We have current records confirming a twin pregnancy at approximately six months.""
The judge reviewed the documents.
"Then I am prepared to issue a temporary order preserving the relevant assets until the trust's eligibility provisions can be fully reviewed.""
Liam's face tightened.
"Your Honor—"
The judge raised her hand.
"Mr. Hayes, I have not finished.""
She continued.
"Furthermore, the disputed transfers involving Carter Hayes Holdings will be subject to an independent forensic review. No party may transfer, conceal, encumber, or otherwise dispose of the disputed assets pending further order.""
Rachel exhaled quietly.
It was a victory.
Not a complete one.
But a victory.
Then the judge turned toward Daniel.
"Mr. Mercer, you have requested appointment as temporary guardian of the beneficiary interests. Why should the court trust you?""
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
"Because I know the history of the trust.""
The judge waited.
"That is not enough.""
Daniel swallowed.
Then he said:
"Because I was the person who originally discovered the missing funds.""
Rachel frowned.
"Then why didn't you report it?""
Daniel looked toward Liam.
"Because I was threatened.""
The judge leaned forward.
"By whom?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
"By Mr. Hayes's father.""
The courtroom became completely silent.
I looked at Rachel.
She looked equally stunned.
Liam sat motionless.
Daniel continued.
"Arthur Hayes knew the money had been moved. He instructed me to remain silent until the company was stable.""
The judge frowned.
"You're saying the founder knew about the missing money?""
"Yes.""
"Do you have evidence?""
Daniel nodded.
"An original recorded statement.""
He reached into his folder and removed a small storage device.
The judge looked at it.
"What does it contain?""
"A recording made two weeks before Arthur Hayes died.""
Liam suddenly stood.
"No.""
Everyone turned.
His face was pale.
"That recording is not admissible.""
The judge looked at him.
"Why?""
Liam's attorney immediately stood.
"Your Honor, we request an opportunity to review the material before any further discussion.""
The judge agreed.
The hearing was temporarily paused.
During the break, Rachel pulled me into the hallway.
"Olivia, something isn't right.""
"What?""
"Daniel's statement changes the entire case.""
I looked at her.
"How?""
"If Liam's father knew about the transfer, then the money may have been moved for reasons that haven't been disclosed.""
I stared through the courtroom window.
Liam was speaking urgently with his attorney.
Khloe stood behind him, visibly upset.
Sophie was sitting with Victoria.
Daniel was speaking to a court officer.
Then Liam looked up.
Our eyes met.
He walked toward me.
Rachel immediately stepped between us.
"Mr. Hayes, please communicate through counsel.""
"I need to speak with Olivia.""
"That isn't happening.""
He looked past Rachel.
"Olivia, you need to hear the recording before he plays it.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because my father wasn't protecting Sophie.""
He glanced toward Daniel.
"He was protecting someone else.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who?""
Liam looked directly at me.
"Your mother.""
I stopped breathing.
My mother had died when I was twenty-two.
She had never met Liam.
She had never been involved in Hayes Vision.
At least, that's what I believed.
"What are you talking about?""
Liam lowered his voice.
"Your mother knew my father before you and I ever met.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"Olivia, please.""
"Don't.""
He reached into his jacket and removed a photograph.
He handed it to me.
It showed a younger Arthur Hayes standing beside a woman.
The woman was smiling.
She had dark brown hair, green eyes, and a small silver pendant around her neck.
I recognized her immediately.
My mother.
My fingers began trembling.
"Where did you get this?""
"From my father's personal files.""
I looked at the date.
Thirty years earlier.
My mother would have been twenty-four.
I looked at Liam.
"Why is she with your father?""
He swallowed.
"Because before he built Hayes Vision, Arthur Hayes was engaged to her.""
The hallway seemed to tilt.
My mother had never mentioned Arthur Hayes.
Not once.
Liam continued.
"She left him before they married. She was already pregnant when she moved away.""
I stared at the photograph.
My voice barely worked.
"Pregnant with whom?""
Liam looked at my stomach.
Then back at me.
"With you.""
When we returned to the courtroom, Daniel was waiting.
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Liam.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
"So he finally told you.""
Rachel stepped closer.
"Mr. Mercer, what is going on?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your mother was the original intended beneficiary of a separate family trust.""
I shook my head.
"What?""
"Arthur Hayes established it before Liam was born. It was designed to protect the woman he intended to marry and any children they might have.""
I couldn't speak.
Daniel continued.
"When your mother left, the trust was never properly dissolved. Arthur kept it active.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed she would eventually return.""
I stared at him.
"She never did.""
"I know.""
"She died twenty years ago.""
Daniel nodded.
"And Arthur learned about it only after her death.""
My eyes filled.
"How?""
"He received a letter from her attorney.""
I looked at Rachel.
She was listening intensely.
Daniel opened his folder.
"That letter is included in the recording archive.""
I took a breath.
"Was I included in the trust?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Yes.""
The answer landed like a stone.
"How much?""
He hesitated.
"That isn't the most important question.""
"What is?""
Daniel's voice became almost a whisper.
"Your mother was the reason Arthur created the original protection for future descendants. Liam inherited control of the company, but he was never supposed to inherit the entire family legacy.""
I stared at him.
Then he said:
"Olivia, you're not simply the former wife of the billionaire who built Hayes Vision.""
He looked toward the courtroom doors.
"You're the daughter Arthur Hayes spent thirty years trying to protect.""
And suddenly, every document, every hidden clause, every secret transfer began to make a terrifying kind of sense.
The judge called everyone back inside.
But I barely heard her.
May you like
Because I was no longer wondering why Liam had hidden my pregnancy.
I was wondering why my own mother had spent her entire life hiding the truth about my father.
