Chapter 2: The Clause Hidden in My Divorce
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:17 a.m., I was sitting on the edge of my bed in my Manhattan apartment, staring at the anonymous message.
The city lights stretched across the windows, and the radiator made an occasional metallic clicking sound.
My babies were quiet.
I rested both hands against my stomach.
"All right," I whispered.
"Mommy needs to figure something out.""
I opened my laptop and searched through the divorce documents.
There were hundreds of pages.
Financial disclosures.
Property transfers.
Tax agreements.
Non-disclosure provisions.
The usual mountain of legal language that made ordinary people feel helpless.
I had trusted Liam's attorney to explain everything.
That had been my first mistake.
My second had been believing Liam when he told me there was nothing to fight over.
At 2:46 a.m., I found the document.
It was titled Supplemental Marital Separation and Future Claims Agreement.
I clicked it open.
The first few pages were ordinary.
Then I reached Section 14.
My eyes moved slowly across the paragraph.
*In the event of any undisclosed pregnancy existing or discovered prior to the effective date of the final marital dissolution, all parental, financial, custodial, and related claims shall be addressed through a separate agreement, and neither party shall be deemed to have waived such rights solely through execution of this settlement.*
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
The clause didn't say Liam had known I was pregnant.
It didn't say he had deliberately hidden anything.
But it did establish that his lawyers had specifically considered the possibility.
And that was strange.
Very strange.
I remembered the day he brought the paperwork home.
We had been sitting in the penthouse dining room.
He had barely looked at me.
"Just sign these, Olivia," he'd said, pushing the pages across the table.
I had been exhausted.
I'd spent the afternoon packing my books and personal belongings.
"What's this one?""
"Administrative.""
"Why does it mention future claims?""
He hadn't even lifted his eyes from his phone.
"Standard language. My attorneys don't want either of us coming back in five years arguing about something.""
I'd signed.
I closed the laptop.
Then I called the only attorney I trusted.
Her name was Rachel Bennett.
We'd met during the first year of Liam's company, when she had helped me negotiate a consulting agreement for a small marketing project.
Rachel was sharp, direct, and almost aggressively difficult to impress.
At 3:08 a.m., she answered.
"Olivia?""
"I'm sorry to call so late.""
"Are you okay?""
I hesitated.
"I need you to look at something.""
"Is someone hurt?""
"No. But I think someone may have lied to me.""
There was a brief silence.
"Send it.""
I forwarded the document.
Rachel promised to review it first thing in the morning.
Then she asked a question that made my stomach tighten.
"Olivia, did Liam ever ask you to sign anything else without giving you time to review it?""
I stared at the screen.
"Yes.""
"How many documents?""
"Two, maybe three.""
"Find every copy you have. Don't contact his lawyers yet.""
"Why?""
"Because if I'm reading this correctly, the clause isn't necessarily the problem. The timing is.""
I sat straighter.
"What do you mean?""
"I mean I need to know whether Liam's legal team was aware of a possible pregnancy before you signed this agreement.""
I looked at the ultrasound photograph resting beside my laptop.
Two tiny profiles.
Two heartbeats.
"Rachel, I didn't even know I was pregnant when I signed.""
"I believe you.""
Her voice became firmer.
"But we need to establish what he knew, when he knew it, and why this language was inserted.""
After we hung up, I couldn't stop thinking about the last weeks of my marriage.
The strange questions.
The sudden legal appointments.
The way Liam had insisted on keeping our personal affairs completely separate from his company.
At the time, I thought he simply wanted to avoid a messy divorce.
Now I wasn't so sure.
At nine the following morning, Rachel arrived at my apartment carrying two coffees and a thick legal pad.
She placed everything on the kitchen counter.
"Show me the original agreement.""
I opened the document on my laptop.
Rachel read quietly.
She didn't interrupt.
She didn't make dramatic expressions.
She simply moved through each page, occasionally making notes.
After twenty minutes, she leaned back.
"Well.""
I hated that word.
"What?""
"Your former husband's attorneys were thorough.""
"Is that good?""
"Not necessarily.""
She pointed to the screen.
"This provision preserves potential parental claims. That's normal enough in certain settlements when there's uncertainty about future family circumstances. But look at the date.""
I leaned closer.
The document had been prepared two days before Liam asked me to leave.
Rachel continued.
"Did he know you might be pregnant?""
"No.""
"Did you tell him you were trying?""
"We had discussed having children. He knew I wanted them.""
"And what did he say?""
I looked down.
"He said we'd think about it after the company went public.""
Rachel made a note.
"Did you stop taking birth control?""
I nodded.
"Three months before the divorce. We both agreed.""
She stopped writing.
"Both?""
"Yes.""
"Did you tell anyone else?""
"My sister, Claire.""
Rachel closed the folder.
"Then we need the full legal history of the agreement. Not just the copy you received.""
I frowned.
"Can we get that?""
"Some of it. We can request communications relevant to the settlement and review any disclosures your former husband's lawyers made. But first, I want you to tell me exactly what happened during the divorce negotiations.""
So I did.
I told her about the criticism.
The canceled invitations.
The way Liam had begun introducing me as his former colleague at company events before we'd even separated.
And Khloe.
Especially Khloe.
Rachel listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she looked at me for a long moment.
"Olivia, I need you to understand something.""
"What?""
"You were married to a very wealthy man who had a powerful legal team. That doesn't mean every decision he made was illegal or malicious. But it does mean you shouldn't assume the agreement protected your interests simply because he told you it did.""
I nodded slowly.
Rachel reached for her coffee.
"And there's something else.""
"What?""
"Last night's gala.""
My stomach tightened.
"What about it?""
"Did you notice the photographers?""
"Of course.""
"One of them was from a financial news outlet. Another was from a celebrity magazine. Someone was clearly expecting a major announcement.""
I frowned.
"I thought it was just the charity event.""
Rachel shook her head.
"Liam's company is preparing a major public announcement next week. I saw the press release this morning.""
She turned her tablet toward me.
The headline read:
*HAYES VISION ANNOUNCES GLOBAL EXPANSION AND NEW LEADERSHIP PARTNERSHIP*
Below it was a photograph of Liam.
And Khloe.
She was smiling, her hand resting lightly on his chest.
Rachel scrolled down.
"Look at this.""
The article described Khloe as a strategic brand ambassador and public representative of the Hayes Vision Foundation.
I stared at the screen.
"She's not qualified to run anything.""
"That's not the point.""
Rachel tapped another paragraph.
"The announcement refers to a restructuring of the company's charitable foundation and a new family-focused initiative.""
I frowned.
"Family-focused?""
Rachel nodded.
"Yes.""
Then she opened another document.
"Olivia, did you know that you were still listed as the founding director of the foundation?""
I shook my head.
"No. Liam told me my position ended when we divorced.""
Rachel's expression hardened.
"According to the most recent public filing, it didn't.""
She showed me the document.
My name was there.
Olivia Carter Hayes.
Founding Director.
The designation hadn't been removed.
And there was something else.
A line beneath my name identified me as the holder of a special voting position tied to the foundation's original endowment.
I stared.
"What does that mean?""
Rachel looked at me.
"It means your divorce agreement may have separated you from your marital assets without automatically removing you from every position you held in the foundation.""
"Can Liam change it?""
"Possibly. But not without following the proper governance procedures.""
I leaned back.
The room seemed suddenly smaller.
For six years, I had helped Liam build the foundation.
I had created its original mission statement.
I had personally organized its first fundraiser.
I had spent weekends visiting children's hospitals while Liam was busy meeting investors.
And after the divorce, he'd told everyone I had stepped away voluntarily.
Apparently, my name was still attached to something he needed.
"Why would he keep me listed?""
Rachel looked at the document again.
"That's what we're going to find out.""
At noon, Liam called.
I stared at the phone until it stopped ringing.
Then it rang again.
And again.
On the fourth attempt, I answered.
"What?""
"Olivia.""
His voice was tense.
"Thank you for picking up.""
"I have ten minutes.""
"I'd like to see you.""
"Why?""
"Because last night was a shock.""
I almost laughed.
"For both of us.""
"I've been thinking about what happened.""
"Good.""
"Are you really carrying twins?""
I closed my eyes.
"Yes, Liam.""
"How are they?""
"They're healthy.""
"Have you been seeing a doctor?""
"Yes.""
"Which hospital?""
I looked at Rachel.
She silently shook her head.
"Why do you need to know?""
"I'm their father.""
"That's a biological fact. It doesn't give you immediate access to every detail of my medical care.""
He exhaled sharply.
"Olivia, I'm not trying to fight with you.""
"Then what are you trying to do?""
A pause.
Then he said something unexpected.
"Khloe knows.""
I waited.
"She knows about the babies?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
"She's upset.""
I looked at Rachel again.
Rachel raised an eyebrow.
I rubbed my forehead.
"That's unfortunate.""
"Can you not be like this?""
"Like what?""
"Cold.""
The word made me smile bitterly.
Six months ago, he'd called me difficult.
Now I was cold.
"Liam, you asked for a divorce. You moved on. You introduced another woman to the world as your future. What exactly did you expect me to do?""
"I didn't know about the pregnancy.""
"You keep saying that.""
"Because it's true.""
"Then perhaps you should ask yourself why you were so busy building a new life that you didn't notice the one we had planned together.""
Silence.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he lowered his voice.
"I want to meet with you and discuss the children.""
"Have your lawyer contact Rachel.""
"Rachel?""
"My attorney.""
He went quiet.
"You're hiring a lawyer?""
"I already have one.""
"Olivia, this doesn't need to become a legal battle.""
"Then don't make it one.""
I ended the call.
Rachel was watching me.
"Good.""
I raised an eyebrow.
"Good?""
"You didn't give him anything he could use against you.""
I looked down at my hands.
"I don't want to fight with him.""
Rachel softened.
"I know.""
"I just want my children to have a peaceful life.""
"Then we'll make sure your decisions protect that possibility.""
My phone vibrated again.
This time, it was an email.
The sender was the Hayes Vision Foundation's administrative office.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: FOUNDING DIRECTOR'S ATTENDANCE REQUIRED*
I opened it.
The board was requesting my presence at a special meeting scheduled for the following Thursday.
The stated purpose was to review the foundation's restructuring and approve changes to its governance.
I looked at Rachel.
She read the email over my shoulder.
Then she slowly smiled.
"Well, Olivia.""
"What?""
"It looks like your ex-husband has a problem.""
I frowned.
"What kind of problem?""
She pointed to the final paragraph.
The board had specifically requested my signature before the proposed changes could take effect.
And beneath the request was a line that made my heart pound.
*Failure to obtain the founding director's approval may delay the proposed transfer of controlling foundation assets.*
I looked up.
"Rachel, what assets?""
She closed her laptop halfway.
"That's what I intend to find out.""
That evening, I received another message from the unknown number.
*Don't trust the pregnancy clause. It wasn't written to protect you.*
I stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
*Ask Liam why the board was told you could never have children.*
My blood ran cold.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Why would the board have been told that?
I had never said I couldn't have children.
I'd never even undergone fertility treatment.
And Liam knew that.
I immediately called the number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
"Olivia, listen carefully. I worked in Liam's executive office for four years.""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Evelyn.""
"What do you know?""
There was a brief silence.
Then she said:
"I know why Liam needed you out of that company before the twins were born.""
May you like
And before I could ask another question, she added:
"Because the babies could change who controls everything.""
