Chapter 4: The Boardroom Where Everything Changed

At 8:15 the following morning, I stood outside the headquarters of Hayes Vision with a hand resting against my stomach and a legal folder tucked beneath my arm.

The building was thirty-eight stories of glass and steel in the heart of Manhattan.

I'd walked through those doors hundreds of times.

I remembered arriving there in the early days with coffee for Liam and sandwiches for the two engineers who couldn't afford lunch. I remembered sitting on the floor of the unfinished executive office, helping Liam choose the company's first logo.

I remembered the day he had written my name on the wall beneath the words:

*WE BUILT THIS TOGETHER.*

Someone had painted over those words years ago.

I wondered whether Liam remembered them.

"Ready?"" Rachel asked.

I looked at her.

"As ready as I'll ever be.""

She adjusted the strap of her briefcase.

"Remember, don't volunteer information. Let them explain why they called you here, and don't sign anything without my review.""

I nodded.

We walked toward the reception desk.

The receptionist looked up.

Her smile disappeared.

"Ms. Carter.""

"Good morning, Jessica.""

She glanced toward the elevators.

"Mr. Hayes is expecting you.""

"That's convenient.""

Jessica looked uncomfortable.

"He asked that you be directed to the executive conference room.""

Rachel placed a business card on the counter.

"Please inform the board that Ms. Carter has arrived with legal representation.""

Jessica picked up the phone.

Within seconds, she was speaking quietly to someone upstairs.

Then she put the receiver down.

"Mr. Hayes would like to see Ms. Carter privately before the meeting.""

Rachel answered before I could.

"That won't be necessary.""

Jessica nodded.

"I'll arrange access.""

As we approached the elevators, I noticed something unusual.

Two security guards were standing beside the entrance to the executive floor.

One of them recognized me.

"Morning, Mrs. Hayes.""

I stopped.

"Olivia Carter," I corrected.

He looked embarrassed.

"Sorry, ma'am.""

The elevator doors opened.

Rachel pressed the button for the thirty-sixth floor.

"You okay?"" she asked.

I looked at the reflection of my pregnant body in the mirrored wall.

"Yes.""

But my heart was pounding.

The conference room was already occupied when we entered.

Liam sat at the head of the long mahogany table.

To his right was Khloe.

She wore a fitted ivory suit, her blonde hair pulled into a sleek ponytail. A diamond bracelet rested against her wrist.

She looked more like someone attending a fashion campaign than a corporate governance meeting.

Across from them sat six board members.

I recognized three.

Margaret Whitmore was seated near the window.

Beside her was Richard Coleman, the company's original financial director.

And at the far end sat Arthur Hayes, Liam's uncle and one of the oldest trustees connected to the family business.

Arthur was seventy-two, with silver hair and a reputation for being brutally honest.

He stood when he saw me.

"Olivia.""

"Arthur.""

He took my hand.

"It's been too long.""

"Yes, it has.""

His eyes moved briefly to my stomach.

Something flickered across his expression.

But he said nothing.

Liam pushed his chair back.

"Olivia, thank you for coming.""

I took the seat Rachel indicated.

"Let's get started.""

Khloe looked at my belly.

Then at Rachel.

"Is it really necessary to bring an attorney?""

Rachel smiled politely.

"Considering the subject of today's meeting, absolutely.""

Khloe leaned toward Liam.

He whispered something to her.

She immediately stopped talking.

The chairman, a man named George Bennett, cleared his throat.

"Thank you, everyone. We are here to discuss the proposed restructuring of the Hayes Vision Foundation and the associated transfer of certain voting and administrative rights.""

He opened a folder.

"Mr. Hayes has requested approval to consolidate the foundation's charitable operations under a new management structure.""

I listened carefully.

The presentation began.

Charts appeared on the screen.

Financial projections.

Administrative costs.

New partnerships.

A proposed leadership transition.

And there, beside Liam's name, was Khloe Monroe.

*Incoming Director of Strategic Communications.*

I stared at the screen.

Margaret raised her hand.

"Before we proceed, I would like clarification on one matter.""

George nodded.

"Of course.""

"Why is the founding director's position being treated as vacant?""

The room went quiet.

Liam shifted in his chair.

"Because Olivia stepped away following our divorce.""

Margaret looked at him.

"That isn't what the official records say.""

Liam's jaw tightened.

"Her involvement was always tied to our marriage.""

I felt Rachel move slightly beside me.

I spoke before she could.

"That's incorrect.""

Everyone turned.

I kept my voice calm.

"I was appointed founding director because I created the foundation's original program and helped establish its mission. My position was never dependent on my marital status.""

Liam looked directly at me.

"Olivia, we discussed this.""

"No. You told me I no longer had a role. That's different.""

Richard Coleman cleared his throat.

"I believe the records support Ms. Carter's position.""

Liam turned toward him.

"Richard.""

Richard opened a document.

"Her appointment was approved by the original board. There was no automatic termination provision.""

Khloe shifted uncomfortably.

"Can we please focus on the future instead of revisiting the past?""

Arthur Hayes turned toward her.

"Miss Monroe, the past is precisely why we're here. You cannot restructure an institution without understanding how it was established.""

Khloe pressed her lips together.

Liam placed both hands on the table.

"Fine. Let's address it directly. Olivia, if you want compensation for your former role, we can discuss a reasonable arrangement.""

I stared at him.

"Compensation?""

"We can negotiate.""

"That's not why I'm here.""

"Then what do you want?""

I took a breath.

"The truth.""

He looked away.

George adjusted his glasses.

"Perhaps we should examine the trust provisions.""

At that moment, a door opened.

A woman in a charcoal suit entered carrying a thick leather portfolio.

"Apologies for the interruption.""

Arthur stood.

"Ms. Sterling. We were expecting you.""

She introduced herself as Eleanor Sterling, the independent administrator of the Hayes Family Trust.

She placed her portfolio on the table.

"Before this meeting proceeds, I have an important notification.""

Liam's expression changed.

"What notification?""

Eleanor opened the portfolio.

"The trust has received confirmation of a potential qualifying family succession event.""

The room became completely silent.

She looked at me.

"Ms. Carter, congratulations on your pregnancy.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

"Based on the documentation provided, the expected children may qualify as direct descendants under the trust's existing succession provisions.""

Khloe's head snapped toward Liam.

"Direct descendants?""

Liam didn't look at her.

Eleanor continued.

"Until the relevant eligibility conditions are confirmed, the trust cannot approve certain transfers that could prejudice the interests of potential beneficiaries.""

Liam leaned forward.

"That's premature.""

Eleanor remained composed.

"It is a procedural safeguard.""

"The children haven't even been born.""

"Which is why the current designation is provisional.""

Liam turned toward the chairman.

"This is absurd. We're delaying a major corporate decision over a hypothetical.""

Arthur spoke quietly.

"Not hypothetical, Liam. Your children are real.""

Liam looked at his uncle.

"You don't understand the structure.""

"I understand it better than you think.""

Arthur removed a document from his folder.

Then he placed it in front of the chairman.

"There's another issue.""

Liam's expression hardened.

"What now?""

Arthur tapped the paper.

"The original trust deed contains a provision regarding the founder's descendants and the continuity of the charitable endowment.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Correct.""

She turned a page.

"Under that provision, qualifying descendants may receive certain protected beneficiary interests. These interests cannot be extinguished simply through a marital settlement between their parents.""

I felt Rachel's hand touch my arm.

She whispered:

"Listen carefully.""

Eleanor continued.

"The trust also requires disclosure of any material family information that may affect succession planning.""

Liam sat back.

His face was becoming pale again.

Then Margaret spoke.

"Which raises an obvious question. Why was the board informed that Mr. and Mrs. Hayes had mutually decided not to have children?""

Liam looked at her.

"That was a private marital matter.""

"Not when it was used to justify a governance decision.""

He said nothing.

Margaret turned toward me.

"Olivia, were you ever asked to approve a change in the foundation's succession structure?""

"No.""

"Did you ever agree to relinquish your founding director's rights?""

"No.""

Richard opened another folder.

"Then we have a problem.""

He turned a page toward the chairman.

"There are two signatures missing from the proposed transfer documents. One belongs to the trust administrator. The other belongs to the founding director.""

Everyone looked at me.

I felt suddenly aware of my hands.

My stomach.

My breathing.

Liam leaned forward.

"Olivia, we can resolve this privately.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

His voice dropped.

"Don't do this.""

I looked directly at him.

"Do what? Read the documents before signing them?""

Khloe stood abruptly.

"This is ridiculous!""

Arthur turned toward her.

"Sit down, please.""

She didn't.

"Why should everyone pretend this is normal? She disappears for six months, shows up pregnant, and suddenly the entire company has to reorganize around her?""

I stared at her.

Then I answered quietly.

"I didn't disappear. Your boyfriend asked me to leave.""

Khloe's cheeks flushed.

"That's not what happened.""

Liam stood.

"Khloe, enough.""

But she continued.

"You have no idea what he's been dealing with! Do you know how much pressure he's under? How many people depend on him?""

I looked at Liam.

"Apparently, two more than he knew.""

No one spoke.

Then Eleanor closed her portfolio.

"Given the circumstances, I recommend postponing the restructuring vote until an independent review of the trust documents is completed.""

George nodded.

"I agree.""

Richard followed.

"So do I.""

Margaret raised her hand.

"Agreed.""

Arthur didn't hesitate.

"Absolutely.""

One by one, the board members supported the postponement.

Liam remained standing.

His hands were clenched.

"This is a mistake.""

Eleanor looked at him.

"Then you should have disclosed the relevant information earlier.""

The meeting was adjourned.

People began collecting their papers.

I was about to leave when Liam approached me.

"Olivia.""

Rachel immediately stood beside me.

He ignored her.

"Can we talk?""

I looked at him.

"We've talked enough.""

"Please.""

His voice was quieter now.

"Just five minutes.""

I glanced at Rachel.

She nodded.

"I'll be outside.""

Liam waited until the room was empty.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

"My father would have wanted those children protected.""

I stared at him.

"Then why are you fighting so hard against it?""

He looked down.

"Because you don't understand what happens if the trust activates.""

"What happens?""

He hesitated.

Then he leaned closer.

"Your children won't just inherit money, Olivia.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

He looked toward the closed conference room door.

"It means they'll have a say in who controls Hayes Vision.""

I stared at him.

"Even as babies?""

"Eventually.""

"And you don't want that?""

His expression hardened.

"I don't want people using them against me.""

I felt something cold move through my chest.

"People?""

He looked at me.

"Olivia, there are things about this company you don't know.""

"Then tell me.""

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

The name displayed was Arthur Hayes.

He declined the call.

Then he looked at me again.

"There's something you need to understand about my father.""

"What?""

Liam's voice dropped to a whisper.

"He didn't leave the company to me because he trusted me.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Liam swallowed.

"He left it to me because he believed I would eventually have a family of my own.""

He took a step backward.

"And now that family is about to become more powerful than I am.""

He walked out before I could ask another question.

I stood alone in the conference room, staring at the empty chair where he'd been sitting.

For the first time, I understood that the twins weren't simply connected to an inheritance.

They were connected to a promise Liam had made long before I entered his life.

And someone else knew exactly what that promise meant.

At 4:30 that afternoon, Rachel called.

"Olivia, I found something.""

"What?""

"Your former father-in-law's original estate planning documents.""

I sat down.

"How?""

"The trust administrator provided them after today's meeting.""

"What's in them?""

Rachel paused.

Then she said:

"There's a letter addressed to Liam. It was written three months before his father died.""

My heart began racing.

"What does it say?""

Rachel took a breath.

"His father explicitly instructed that any children Liam had with his legal wife would be protected under a separate family provision.""

I closed my eyes.

"His legal wife?""

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Rachel, we were married.""

"I know.""

"Then what's the problem?""

Her voice became very serious.

"Olivia, Liam's father added one more condition.""

"What condition?""

"Any children born outside the founder's intended family arrangement would not qualify.""

I froze.

"Outside?""

Rachel hesitated.

"There's something else. Liam's attorney submitted a declaration to the trust stating that you and Liam had no intention of having children.""

My mouth went dry.

"That was before the divorce.""

"Yes.""

"Then the declaration was false.""

"Potentially. But we need to examine the exact dates and supporting documents.""

I looked toward the ultrasound pictures.

Two tiny faces.

Two lives.

And suddenly, I was terrified that someone might try to use a legal technicality to decide whether my children belonged.

Rachel spoke again.

"Olivia, there's a bigger issue.""

"What?""

"The letter from Liam's father contains a second instruction.""

I waited.

Rachel lowered her voice.

"If Liam ever attempted to remove his wife from the family trust through deception, the original succession provisions could be triggered.""

I couldn't move.

"What does that mean?""

"It means your father-in-law anticipated the possibility that Liam might try to manipulate the arrangement.""

I stared at the wall.

May you like

Then Rachel said the words that made my blood run cold.

"And Olivia, according to the date on the document, his father wrote that warning specifically after an incident involving another woman.""
