Chapter 6: The Company Registered in My Name
"Tell me what Carter Hayes Holdings is.""
Liam didn't answer.
He stood in my doorway, one hand resting against the frame, his expression unreadable.
I could hear the refrigerator humming behind me.
Somewhere upstairs, a child was running across the floor.
Everything around us seemed painfully ordinary.
Except my life.
My life had become a series of discoveries about the man I'd once trusted more than anyone.
"Olivia," Liam said carefully, "you need to calm down.""
I almost laughed.
"That's what you say when you don't want to answer a question.""
"Because you're jumping to conclusions.""
"Then correct me.""
He looked toward the hallway.
"Can we go inside?""
"No.""
"Please.""
I kept the door between us.
"Did you register a company in my name?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"It's a holding company.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"It was created as part of a family restructuring.""
"With my name?""
"Your name was included because you were still legally connected to the original family trust.""
I stared at him.
"I was your wife.""
"Exactly.""
"Not your business property.""
His jaw tightened.
"That's not what I meant.""
"Then explain why thirty million dollars belonging to your daughter was transferred into a company registered under my name.""
He looked down.
Then he said:
"Because it was the safest option.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"Safest for whom?""
He didn't answer.
I closed the door.
He placed his palm against it.
"Olivia, wait.""
"No.""
"Please. You need to understand what you're getting into.""
I looked at him through the narrow opening.
"I think I'm beginning to.""
Then I shut the door.
I locked it.
And for the next several minutes, I stood there listening to his footsteps retreat down the hallway.
Rachel arrived forty minutes later.
She brought a corporate attorney named David Price, who specialized in trust disputes and complex asset transfers.
They sat at my dining table while I made copies of every document Victoria had provided.
David studied the registration records.
Then he asked a question.
"Ms. Carter, did you ever authorize the creation of this company?""
"No.""
"Did you sign any incorporation documents?""
"Not that I remember.""
"Did you give anyone permission to use your Social Security number, personal identification, or signature?""
"No.""
He nodded.
"That's important.""
Rachel placed the divorce agreement beside him.
"Could this have been authorized through the marital settlement?""
David examined the pages.
"Not from what I'm seeing here. The agreement refers to a potential family restructuring, but it doesn't specifically authorize the creation of a company using her personal identity.""
I looked at him.
"Does that mean someone forged my signature?""
"Possibly. We need the original incorporation records and the identity verification documents.""
Rachel leaned forward.
"Can we obtain them?""
"Yes, through the relevant corporate filings and legal requests. But there's another issue.""
He turned his laptop toward us.
Carter Hayes Holdings had been registered in Delaware.
Its listed managing member was an entity called Meridian Advisory Group.
The address was a commercial office in Manhattan.
I recognized it.
It was the same building where Liam's private investment attorneys had their offices.
David scrolled down.
"There's more.""
He opened the company's filing history.
Three months before my divorce became final, Carter Hayes Holdings had received an initial capital contribution.
Thirty million dollars.
The exact amount missing from Sophie's trust.
Rachel leaned back.
"That's our connection.""
David nodded.
"And it gets worse.""
He opened another document.
The holding company had subsequently transferred the funds into several investment vehicles.
Some were connected to Hayes Vision.
Others were not.
One transaction stood out.
A payment of $4.8 million had been made to a luxury real estate development in the Hamptons.
Another payment had gone toward purchasing shares in a private technology company.
And the largest transfer was still pending.
It was scheduled for the following month.
Rachel read the recipient's name.
Then she looked at me.
"Khloe Monroe.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Why would she receive money?""
David answered.
"According to these preliminary records, the payment is classified as a strategic brand partnership and investment distribution.""
I stared at the screen.
"How much?""
He pointed to the amount.
Eight million dollars.
I slowly sat back.
Khloe wasn't simply Liam's girlfriend.
She was listed as a recipient of money that had originated in an account established to protect his first child's future.
And my name was attached to the company holding the funds.
Rachel closed the laptop.
"We need to act immediately.""
"What do we do?""
"First, preserve the evidence. Second, send formal notices to the relevant financial institutions. Third, request an emergency review of the company formation and transfers.""
David nodded.
"And we should notify the trust administrator that the funds may have been improperly diverted.""
I looked down at my stomach.
"Can Liam move the money?""
David hesitated.
"Some of it has already moved. But the pending transfers may be stopped if we act quickly and establish sufficient grounds.""
I looked at Rachel.
"Do it.""
She nodded.
"Immediately.""
At noon, Victoria joined us by video call.
She looked exhausted.
Rachel explained what we'd found.
When Victoria heard that the money had been transferred through a company bearing my name, she covered her mouth.
"Oh, my God.""
I leaned closer to the screen.
"Did you know about Carter Hayes Holdings?""
"No.""
"Did Liam ever tell you he was creating another trust?""
Victoria shook her head.
"Never.""
Rachel asked:
"Did you sign any documents transferring Sophie's funds?""
"No.""
"Did you receive any settlement payment?""
Victoria hesitated.
"Yes. A small amount.""
"How much?""
"Two hundred thousand dollars.""
David looked up.
"Was that the full amount you agreed to?""
Victoria shook her head.
"No. The original agreement said Sophie would receive a protected account, and I would receive separate support payments. I was told the trust would remain untouched.""
Rachel made a note.
"Do you still have the settlement agreement?""
Victoria nodded.
"I'll send it.""
Then she looked at me.
"Olivia, I'm sorry.""
I frowned.
"For what?""
"For not warning you sooner.""
I shook my head.
"You didn't know.""
Victoria looked down.
"I should have known what he was capable of.""
I didn't answer.
Because I was beginning to understand something painful.
Liam hadn't necessarily changed when he became rich.
Perhaps he had always been capable of this.
Perhaps money had simply given him more ways to hide it.
At 2:30 p.m., my phone rang.
Liam.
I answered on speaker.
Rachel gestured for me to let him talk.
"Hello?""
"Olivia, we need to meet.""
I looked at Rachel.
"We're already working on the documents.""
"That's exactly why I need to see you.""
"Why?""
"Because you've received incomplete information.""
I leaned back.
"Then give me the complete information.""
He exhaled.
"Carter Hayes Holdings was created to protect family assets.""
"Why was it registered in my name?""
"Because the trust required an independent holding entity.""
"Why my identity?""
"Because the company needed a neutral beneficiary representative.""
I frowned.
"Did I agree to that?""
Silence.
"Liam?""
"Not directly.""
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
I continued.
"Did you forge my signature?""
"No.""
"Then how did the company get registered?""
"My attorneys handled the paperwork.""
"Using my identity?""
"Olivia, I didn't personally create the company.""
"That's not an answer.""
He became impatient.
"Look, I was trying to protect the assets from a much bigger problem.""
"Which problem?""
He lowered his voice.
"My father had enemies.""
I glanced at David.
He was taking notes.
"Who?""
"People who wanted control of the company.""
"Like Daniel Mercer?""
Silence.
Then Liam said:
"Where did you hear that name?""
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same reaction.
The same sudden shift in his voice.
"Who is Daniel Mercer?""
Liam exhaled.
"He's a former adviser.""
"Former?""
"He worked with my father.""
"And why is he listed as a beneficiary?""
"He isn't.""
I looked at David.
He shook his head and pointed to the documents.
"His name is on the filing.""
"That's a clerical error.""
"An eight-figure clerical error?""
Liam said nothing.
Then he asked:
"Have you spoken to Victoria?""
I didn't answer.
He continued.
"Olivia, whatever she's told you, she's not telling the whole story.""
"What isn't she telling me?""
"Her daughter isn't the only reason she wants access to the trust.""
Rachel leaned toward the phone.
"Mr. Hayes, if you have information relevant to the trust, please communicate it through counsel.""
Liam's tone changed.
"Rachel, this is a family matter.""
Rachel answered calmly.
"No. This is now a corporate and fiduciary matter.""
He ignored her.
"Olivia, please. I need you to understand that if this investigation continues, everyone involved could be hurt.""
I felt a chill.
"Is that a threat?""
"No.""
"Then what is it?""
"A warning.""
I looked at my stomach.
"Don't ever threaten me or my children again.""
He went quiet.
Then I ended the call.
An hour later, David received a response from the Delaware filing office.
He opened the electronic record.
Rachel stood behind him.
I watched his expression change.
"What?""
He enlarged the screen.
"There's an incorporation certificate.""
He scrolled down.
The document listed me as the sole beneficial owner of Carter Hayes Holdings.
My full legal name.
My former married name.
My personal address.
And beneath it was a digital signature.
I stared.
It looked like mine.
Almost exactly.
But I hadn't signed it.
David opened the verification record.
"There's a problem.""
Rachel leaned closer.
"What?""
"The document was signed electronically using an authentication code sent to a phone number.""
I frowned.
"Whose phone number?""
David turned the screen.
I recognized the final four digits.
They belonged to Liam's old personal number.
My mouth went dry.
"Can that happen?""
David nodded slowly.
"It means whoever completed this filing had access to an authentication method associated with Mr. Hayes's phone.""
Rachel looked at me.
"We need to establish whether he had permission to act on your behalf.""
I shook my head.
"He didn't.""
David continued reading.
"There's another document attached.""
He opened it.
A declaration of beneficial ownership.
It contained a statement that I had personally approved the transfer of all relevant funds.
At the bottom was the date.
The same day Liam had brought the supplemental divorce documents to our penthouse.
I stared at it.
That evening.
I remembered the dining room.
The stack of papers.
The pen.
His phone ringing while I signed.
He had asked me to initial three separate pages.
I had trusted him.
I had believed I was simply signing the final paperwork ending our marriage.
But now I was looking at a document that claimed I'd authorized the transfer of thirty million dollars.
I felt sick.
Rachel reached for my hand.
"Olivia.""
I couldn't look at her.
"I didn't sign this.""
"I believe you.""
"I never agreed to move anyone's money.""
"We'll establish that.""
I stared at the signature.
Then another detail caught my eye.
The declaration had been witnessed by a notary.
A woman named Patricia Wells.
I knew that name.
I had met her before.
She was Liam's personal executive assistant.
The same woman who had brought documents to our penthouse during the divorce.
I whispered:
"Patricia.""
Rachel looked up.
"Who is she?""
"His assistant.""
David immediately opened another record.
"There's a phone number here.""
He compared it with the contact details in the corporate filing.
Then he frowned.
"Interesting.""
"What?""
"The notary's commission was issued in New York, but the declaration claims it was executed in Delaware.""
Rachel looked at him.
"Was the notary physically present?""
David shook his head.
"The document doesn't establish that.""
Rachel stood.
"Then we may have a serious authentication problem.""
I looked down at my stomach.
The babies moved.
One kick.
Then another.
I placed both hands over them.
"Nobody is going to use my name to steal from another child," I whispered.
Rachel heard me.
She nodded.
"That's exactly what we're going to prove.""
At 6:45 p.m., I received an unexpected visitor.
Not Liam.
Not Khloe.
Patricia Wells.
She stood outside my apartment wearing a beige coat and carrying a large handbag.
Her eyes were red.
When I opened the door, she immediately began speaking.
"Olivia, I know you probably hate me.""
I stared at her.
"Why are you here?""
She looked down the hallway.
"Can I come in?""
I hesitated.
Then I remembered Rachel's advice.
"Only if my attorney is on the phone.""
Patricia nodded.
"That's fair.""
I called Rachel and put her on speaker.
Patricia sat at the dining table.
She looked nervous.
"I heard there was an investigation.""
I didn't respond.
She continued.
"I didn't know the company would be used this way.""
Rachel's voice came through the phone.
"Ms. Wells, what exactly are you referring to?""
Patricia clasped her hands.
"The incorporation documents.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did you witness my signature?""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"Was I there?""
Patricia didn't answer.
I stared at her.
"Was I there, Patricia?""
"No.""
The room became completely silent.
Rachel spoke.
"Did you notarize the document without Ms. Carter's presence?""
Patricia nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Mr. Hayes told me it was already approved.""
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"You knew I hadn't signed it.""
Patricia looked at me.
"I knew the signature had been copied from another document.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Why would you do that?""
Her voice cracked.
"Because I was told it was necessary to protect the company.""
"By Liam?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
Rachel interrupted.
"Ms. Wells, do you have any documentation supporting this?""
Patricia opened her handbag.
She removed a small envelope.
Inside were printed emails and a handwritten note.
"I kept these because I was afraid something like this would happen.""
Rachel asked her to read the relevant message.
Patricia unfolded the paper.
Her voice trembled.
"Mr. Hayes wrote: 'Use the existing signature file. Olivia doesn't need to be involved. The transfer must be completed before the family review.''"
I stared at her.
"Before the family review?""
Patricia nodded.
"He wanted the company registered before the trust administrator could review the beneficiaries.""
Rachel's voice became very firm.
"Ms. Wells, you understand that this may have serious legal consequences?""
Patricia nodded.
"I know.""
"Why are you coming forward now?""
She looked at me.
"Because Mr. Hayes asked me to prepare another document this morning.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What document?""
Patricia removed one final page.
It was a draft agreement.
At the top was my name.
Beneath it was a statement claiming that I voluntarily relinquished all interests connected to Carter Hayes Holdings.
And at the bottom was a blank signature line.
I stared at it.
"Why would he need another signature?""
Patricia swallowed.
"Because he knows the original documents are being investigated.""
Rachel went silent.
Then she asked:
"Did he say when he wanted this signed?""
Patricia looked down.
"Tomorrow.""
I stared at the paper.
Tomorrow.
Less than twenty-four hours.
Then Patricia whispered something that made the room feel suddenly colder.
"He also told me that if you refused, he would make sure the public believed you had stolen the thirty million dollars yourself.""
I couldn't move.
The money was missing.
The company was in my name.
And Liam was preparing to blame me.
Rachel's voice cut through the silence.
"Olivia, don't touch that document again. Patricia, preserve every communication you have.""
I looked at Patricia.
"Why are you helping me?""
She wiped her eyes.
"Because I have a daughter too.""
Then she leaned forward.
"And because I heard something else in Mr. Hayes's office this afternoon.""
"What?""
Patricia glanced toward the closed door.
She lowered her voice.
"He wasn't worried about the money.""
I frowned.
"Then what was he worried about?""
She looked directly at me.
"He was worried that Daniel Mercer had returned.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who is Daniel Mercer?""
Patricia swallowed.
"The man who knows where the original thirty million dollars went.""
She paused.
Then she added:
"And the man Liam's father believed would eventually destroy his son.""
A moment later, Rachel's phone rang.
She checked the caller ID.
Her expression changed.
"It's Eleanor Sterling.""
She answered.
"Hello?""
I watched Rachel listen.
At first, she said nothing.
Then she stood.
"What do you mean the trust has been frozen?""
A pause.
Her face became pale.
"All of it?""
Another pause.
Then she looked at me.
"Olivia, when did you last speak to Liam?""
"About three hours ago.""
Rachel covered the phone.
"He's filed an emergency petition accusing you of fraud.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What?""
Rachel returned to the call.
"Please send us the complete filing immediately.""
She ended the conversation.
Then she turned toward me.
"The petition claims you secretly established Carter Hayes Holdings, diverted the trust funds, and attempted to transfer eight million dollars to Khloe Monroe.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"I know.""
"Can he actually do that?""
"He's trying.""
I looked toward Patricia.
She was crying now.
Then my phone vibrated.
A notification appeared.
A financial news alert.
<text weight="semibold" color="default">BREAKING: BILLIONAIRE LIAM HAYES ACCUSES EX-WIFE OF $30 MILLION TRUST FRAUD AS FAMILY DISPUTE EXPLODES.</text>
Below it was a photograph of me.
Taken at the Plaza gala.
My white dress.
My pregnant stomach.
My face turned toward the camera.
The headline beneath the photograph read:
*WHO IS THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MISSING MILLIONS?*
I slowly lowered the phone.
Six months ago, Liam had told me image mattered.
Now he was using mine to destroy me.
And tomorrow morning, the entire country would wake up believing I had stolen thirty million dollars.
But there was one thing Liam didn't know.
Patricia had brought us the original emails.
And one of them contained the name of the person who had actually received the missing money.
It wasn't Khloe.
It wasn't Daniel.
It was someone Liam had spent sixteen years pretending didn't exist.
May you like
His own daughter.
Sophie Hayes.
