Chapter 5: The Woman Who Came Before Me

The name appeared in an old photograph.

I found it at 7:12 that evening, buried inside a digital archive Rachel had received from the trust administrator.

The photograph showed Liam at twenty-six, standing beside a woman with dark red hair.

They were outside a country estate in Connecticut.

Liam looked younger.

Less polished.

He wore a simple black suit and had one arm around the woman's waist.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*Liam and Victoria — before everything changed.*

I stared at the name.

Victoria.

I'd never heard Liam mention her.

Not once.

"Who is she?"" I asked Rachel over the phone.

"I don't know yet. I'm trying to identify her.""

"Why would his father write a warning about another woman?""

Rachel was quiet.

"That's what concerns me.""

I opened the accompanying estate documents.

There were references to an earlier engagement, a confidential settlement, and something called the Hayes Family Continuity Review.

I scrolled farther.

Then I found a date.

Twelve years earlier.

The same year Liam's father had died.

"Rachel?""

"Yes?""

"I think there's more here.""

I read the paragraph aloud.

It described a dispute involving a potential beneficiary and an alleged attempt to alter a family trust declaration.

Rachel immediately asked me to send her the page.

"Don't draw conclusions yet," she said.

"But this may explain why the trust administrator reacted so quickly to your pregnancy.""

I sent it.

Then I looked at the photograph again.

Liam had once loved another woman.

That wasn't what troubled me.

What troubled me was that his father had apparently written special protections into the trust because of something that happened between them.

And now the same thing was happening again.

Only this time, there were two unborn children involved.

The next morning, Rachel called with a name.

"Victoria Lane.""

I repeated it.

"Who is she?""

"She was engaged to Liam before you met him.""

I sat down.

"Engaged?""

"Yes. They were together for nearly three years.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"That's not the important part.""

Rachel sent me a link to an old newspaper article.

The headline read:

*HAYES FAMILY HEIR CALLS OFF ENGAGEMENT AFTER PRIVATE TRUST DISPUTE*

I opened it.

The article was brief.

Victoria Lane had reportedly ended her engagement to Liam Hayes following disagreements about his family's financial arrangements.

There was no mention of pregnancy.

No mention of children.

Just a statement from the family attorney saying the couple had decided to pursue separate futures.

I looked at Rachel's message.

*I'm trying to contact her.*

Then another message appeared.

*She may be the only person who can explain what Liam's father was trying to prevent.*

I stared at the screen.

A minute later, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Olivia Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Victoria Lane.""

I gripped the phone.

"How did you get my number?""

"Rachel Bennett contacted me.""

I swallowed.

"She told you about the trust?""

"She told me enough.""

There was a pause.

Then Victoria said:

"I think we need to meet.""

"Why?""

"Because Liam has already done this once.""

My stomach tightened.

"Done what?""

"Used a woman he loved to protect his position in the family business.""

I stared at the wall.

"Where can I meet you?""

"There's a hotel on Fifth Avenue. The lobby restaurant. Tomorrow at eleven.""

"Why not today?""

"Because I need time to find something.""

"What?""

Her voice became quieter.

"The letter Liam's father sent me before he died.""

Then she ended the call.

I barely slept that night.

At eleven the following morning, I arrived at the hotel with Rachel.

Victoria was already seated near the windows.

She was in her early forties, elegant but understated, wearing a gray wool coat and a simple gold necklace.

When she stood, I noticed that she had the same guarded expression I'd seen in old photographs of Liam.

She shook Rachel's hand first.

Then mine.

"Thank you for meeting me.""

I sat down.

"Why did you say Liam had done this before?""

Victoria looked at me.

"Because I was pregnant when we ended our engagement.""

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I stared at her.

"What?""

She nodded.

"I was twenty-nine. Liam was twenty-seven. We were engaged, and we were expecting a child.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"What happened?""

Victoria looked down at her hands.

"Liam's father discovered the pregnancy. He was thrilled at first. He spoke about the family succession arrangements and said the baby would be protected.""

I swallowed.

"Then?""

"Then Liam started changing.""

She looked toward the window.

"He became distant. He stopped coming home. He began telling me that having a child would ruin his future.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What did he say?""

Victoria gave a bitter smile.

"Almost exactly what he told you, I imagine.""

I said nothing.

"He told me the company needed him. He said his father was pressuring him. He said he couldn't afford distractions.""

She looked directly at me.

"And then he told me that I wasn't the kind of woman his family needed.""

My hands went cold.

"Did he leave you?""

"Not immediately.""

Victoria reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed her standing outside a hospital.

She was holding a newborn baby.

My chest tightened.

"Your child?""

Victoria nodded.

"My daughter, Sophie.""

I looked at Rachel.

She was watching Victoria carefully.

"Where is she now?""

"She's sixteen. She lives with me in Boston.""

I looked back at the photograph.

"Does Liam know?""

Victoria's expression changed.

"He knows.""

"Does he see her?""

"No.""

I couldn't speak.

Victoria continued.

"When I became pregnant, Liam's father insisted that the child be included in the family trust. Liam resisted. He said he wasn't ready to become a father.""

"Was he trying to remove her?""

"Yes.""

Victoria opened a folder.

"His father stopped him.""

She placed a document on the table.

It was a letter dated eleven years earlier.

I read the first paragraph.

*Liam, your responsibility to your family does not begin when it becomes convenient. A child is not an inconvenience to be negotiated away.*

My eyes moved down the page.

The letter continued.

His father had accused him of trying to persuade Victoria to sign a declaration stating that the pregnancy was not intended and that she would not pursue any claims against the family trust.

I looked up.

"Did you sign it?""

Victoria nodded.

"Yes.""

Rachel frowned.

"Why?""

"Because Liam told me he would never abandon us. He said the document was just an administrative form. He promised the trust would still support Sophie.""

I felt sick.

"What happened?""

Victoria looked at me.

"He got what he wanted. The paperwork was completed. The family settled certain claims. But after his father died, Liam stopped responding to my calls.""

I stared at the letter.

"Did you ever try to contact him again?""

"Many times.""

"And?""

"He sent me money twice. Then his attorneys sent a letter telling me to stop contacting him.""

Silence settled over the table.

I looked at the photograph of Sophie.

Sixteen years old.

A daughter Liam had never publicly acknowledged.

I thought about the way he'd stared at my stomach at the Plaza.

The shock.

The fear.

The champagne glass shattering at his feet.

Maybe he hadn't been shocked simply because he was about to become a father.

Maybe he was terrified because he was about to face the same consequences he'd escaped years earlier.

Rachel leaned forward.

"Victoria, do you have evidence that Liam knew the trust would be affected by the pregnancy?""

Victoria nodded.

She removed a second envelope.

Inside was a printed email.

It had been sent by Liam's father to the family attorney.

*I have reason to believe my son is attempting to secure a settlement from Victoria before the child is born. I will not permit him to use the family trust to avoid his obligations. Any future children of his marriage must receive the same protections.*

Rachel read it twice.

Then she looked at Victoria.

"Did you know about the clause protecting future children?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because Liam's father told me he wanted to handle everything privately. He said he didn't want the family business turning a child's birth into a public controversy.""

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

"Did Liam ever tell you he loved you?""

Victoria looked at me for a long time.

Then she nodded.

"Yes.""

"What happened to that?""

She gave a small, sad smile.

"He loved being loved. I'm not sure he ever understood what loving someone required.""

I looked down.

I knew exactly what she meant.

That afternoon, Rachel arranged a call with the trust administrator.

Eleanor Sterling joined us from her office.

Victoria attended as well.

Rachel began.

"We have reviewed the historical documents concerning the previous beneficiary dispute.""

Eleanor nodded.

"I've seen them.""

"Then you understand why we're concerned about the current restructuring.""

"Yes.""

Rachel opened her notes.

"Was the special family provision created specifically to protect children from being excluded through private marital settlements?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"That is one of its purposes.""

"Does it apply to Olivia's twins?""

"Potentially, subject to confirmation of the legal and biological requirements.""

Victoria spoke.

"What about my daughter?""

Eleanor looked at her.

"Ms. Lane, your daughter has a separate history within the trust records. Her rights were addressed through the settlement at the time.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Addressed or removed?""

Eleanor folded her hands.

"That is a legal distinction I cannot resolve in this meeting.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"Then we need the complete original trust documentation, including any amendments made after Mr. Hayes's death.""

"I can provide the authorized records.""

"And the correspondence concerning the earlier settlement?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Subject to the appropriate confidentiality review.""

Rachel thanked her.

The call ended.

I turned toward Victoria.

"Do you think Liam knows you're helping me?""

She looked down.

"Not yet.""

"Will he be angry?""

Victoria gave a small laugh.

"Olivia, Liam has spent sixteen years pretending I don't exist. I don't think he has the right to be angry about anything I do.""

I smiled faintly.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

*Stop digging into the past. You're putting your children in danger.*

My blood went cold.

Rachel immediately noticed my expression.

"What happened?""

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then she looked at Victoria.

"Did you receive anything similar?""

Victoria shook her head.

"Not yet.""

Rachel turned back to me.

"Don't respond. I'll preserve this.""

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

*Ask Victoria what happened to the trust money after her daughter was born.*

I looked up.

Victoria had gone pale.

"What is it?"" I asked.

She didn't answer.

Instead, she slowly opened her handbag and removed another document.

Her fingers trembled.

"I didn't want to tell you this unless I was certain.""

"Tell me what?""

Victoria looked directly at me.

"After Sophie was born, Liam's father established a protected account for her.""

Rachel leaned closer.

"Was the account funded?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

Victoria swallowed.

"Thirty million dollars.""

I stared at her.

"Thirty million?""

"That's what the original statement showed.""

"Where is it now?""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"That's what I've been trying to find out for sixteen years.""

She slid the document toward Rachel.

At the bottom was a transaction record.

The account had been transferred to another trust.

The transfer date was six weeks after Liam's father died.

And the authorization signature belonged to Liam Hayes.

Rachel's expression changed.

"Do you have the complete account history?""

Victoria nodded.

"Some of it.""

She pulled out another page.

Then another.

Rachel studied them.

Finally, she looked up.

"Olivia, I think we have a serious problem.""

I looked at the paperwork.

"What?""

Rachel pointed to the name of the receiving trust.

*HAYES FAMILY DEVELOPMENT TRUST.*

Then she showed me the list of beneficiaries.

There were three names.

Liam Hayes.

Khloe Monroe.

And a third name I didn't recognize.

Daniel Mercer.

I frowned.

"Who is Daniel Mercer?""

Victoria went completely still.

Then she whispered:

"He's the man who helped Liam's father investigate what happened to the original trust.""

Rachel looked at her.

"Why would he be a beneficiary?""

Victoria shook her head.

"Because he wasn't supposed to be.""

That evening, I returned home feeling as though the ground beneath my life had shifted.

I had gone into the morning believing Liam had simply lied about his previous relationship.

I now knew there was an entire history of financial arrangements, hidden beneficiaries, and children whose interests had apparently been treated as obstacles.

I was halfway through preparing dinner when the doorbell rang.

I checked the security camera.

Liam.

Alone.

I considered refusing to answer.

Then I remembered the documents.

I opened the door but kept the security chain in place.

"What do you want?""

He looked exhausted.

His shirt collar was open, and his hair was slightly disheveled.

"I need to talk to you.""

"We've talked.""

"Not about this.""

I stared at him.

"About Victoria?""

His face changed.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

"Who told you?""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Is it true?""

He looked away.

"Olivia, that was a long time ago.""

"Is she your daughter?""

He didn't answer.

"Sixteen years old, Liam. Her name is Sophie.""

His jaw tightened.

"Don't get involved in something you don't understand.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's becoming your favorite sentence.""

He looked at my stomach.

"Are you working with Victoria?""

"That's none of your business.""

"It is if she's using you.""

I stared at him.

"Using me for what?""

He lowered his voice.

"She wants money.""

I felt something inside me turn cold.

"She wants the money her daughter was promised.""

"That situation was resolved.""

"Then why is the money missing?""

He went completely still.

I knew immediately.

He knew exactly what I was talking about.

"Who showed you those records?""

I stepped back.

"Goodnight, Liam.""

He placed one hand against the door.

"Olivia, wait.""

I looked at him.

For a moment, he seemed almost desperate.

Then he said:

"Victoria doesn't know the whole story.""

"What story?""

He swallowed.

"The money wasn't stolen.""

I waited.

"It was moved to protect the family.""

"From whom?""

His eyes met mine.

"From my father.""

I stared at him.

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

"Rachel?""

Her voice was urgent.

"Olivia, don't let Liam leave until you hear this.""

I looked at him.

"What happened?""

"We just received the complete trust transfer records.""

A pause.

Then Rachel said:

"The thirty million dollars wasn't moved into Liam's personal account.""

I frowned.

"Then where did it go?""

Rachel's voice dropped.

"It went into an account controlled by a company that didn't exist until three months before your divorce.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What company?""

She read the name.

*Carter Hayes Holdings.*

I stopped breathing.

My name.

My former married name.

The company had been registered using my identity.

I looked at Liam.

May you like

He was watching me.

And for the first time, I understood that the missing money might not be the only thing he'd put under my name.
