Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Billionaire's Perfect Image
I met Evelyn the following morning at a small coffee shop on Madison Avenue.
She arrived fifteen minutes early.
I knew it was her immediately.
She was in her late forties, with shoulder-length blonde hair, a navy coat, and the kind of carefully composed expression that suggested she had spent years working in rooms where people were not supposed to ask questions.
She chose a table near the back.
When I approached, she stood.
"Olivia?""
"Yes.""
She looked at my stomach.
Then her eyes softened.
"I'm sorry.""
I sat down slowly.
"For what?""
"For waiting this long.""
She ordered black coffee.
I ordered peppermint tea.
For almost a minute, neither of us spoke.
Then Evelyn reached into her handbag and placed a small flash drive on the table.
"I don't know how much Rachel Bennett has told you.""
"She's reviewing the divorce agreement.""
"Good. You'll need her.""
I looked at the flash drive.
"What's on it?""
"Documents. Internal emails. A few meeting recordings.""
I didn't touch it.
"Why are you giving me these?""
Evelyn looked toward the window.
"Because I have a daughter.""
I waited.
"She's twenty-six. When she was younger, she became seriously ill. Her father left us during that time because he didn't want his business partners knowing he had family problems.""
Her mouth tightened.
"I spent years watching men like Liam treat people as disposable whenever they became inconvenient.""
She looked directly at me.
"And I watched him do the same thing to you.""
I lowered my voice.
"What did Liam tell the board?""
Evelyn took a breath.
"Before your divorce, he began preparing them for your departure. He said you were emotionally unstable, that you were no longer interested in the foundation, and that your marriage had effectively ended months before the public announcement.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"That's not true.""
"I know.""
"He told them I wasn't interested?""
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"I created that foundation.""
"I know that too.""
She opened a folder and removed several printed emails.
One was dated five months earlier.
The sender was Liam.
The recipient was the foundation's legal committee.
I began reading.
*Olivia's personal priorities have changed. She has expressed no interest in continuing her involvement, and we should proceed with a transition that allows the foundation to move forward without disruption.*
My fingers went cold.
Another email followed.
*We should avoid any discussion of succession until the marital settlement is finalized. Her continued presence could complicate the proposed leadership structure.*
I looked up.
"What leadership structure?""
Evelyn leaned closer.
"Khloe.""
I stared at her.
"Khloe Monroe?""
"Yes. Liam wanted to make her the public face of the foundation.""
"She's a model.""
"She was also being positioned as the incoming director of the foundation's public relations initiative.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't explain why my pregnancy matters.""
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she removed another document.
It was a board memorandum.
The title read:
*SUCCESSION AND GOVERNANCE CONTINUITY PLAN*
I scanned the first page.
Then I reached a paragraph near the bottom.
My name appeared.
So did a reference to potential heirs.
I read it twice.
"What's this?""
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"Hayes Vision was built with an unusual family succession structure. Liam's father established it when the original company was created. Certain voting rights were assigned through a family trust.""
I looked at her.
"Family trust?""
"Yes. The company is publicly known as Liam's empire, but some of its most important voting arrangements are governed by a private trust.""
She turned another page.
"Your marriage agreement gave you a defined beneficial interest connected to the family succession structure. The divorce settlement was supposed to resolve your personal claims, but the trust has separate rules.""
I frowned.
"I never knew that.""
"Most people didn't.""
"Why would I be included?""
"Because you were Liam's wife when the trust's family provisions were updated. And because the foundation's original endowment was partially funded through assets connected to that structure.""
I stared at the document.
Evelyn continued.
"There's a provision that allows certain family-related voting rights to vest in direct descendants under specific conditions. Your children may qualify.""
My heart began beating faster.
"May?""
"That's for your attorney to determine. I can't give you a legal conclusion.""
I looked down at my stomach.
Two children.
My children.
Suddenly, they weren't just the unexpected consequence of a marriage that had fallen apart.
They were connected to something Liam had spent years protecting.
"Did he know?"" I whispered.
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"He knew there was a possibility.""
My head snapped up.
"What?""
"Not that you were pregnant. But he knew that if you had children before certain restructuring documents were finalized, the trust provisions could become relevant.""
I remembered the anonymous message.
Ask Liam why the board was told you could never have children.
"Why did he tell them I couldn't have children?""
Evelyn looked uncomfortable.
"Because he told them you had agreed not to pursue motherhood while he focused on the company.""
I felt sick.
"That's not true.""
"I know.""
"He wanted children. He said we'd have them after the company went public.""
Evelyn nodded.
"He also told the board that the two of you had mutually decided to remain child-free.""
I looked at her.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I laughed.
It was a strange, hollow sound.
He hadn't simply replaced me.
He had rewritten our marriage.
He had told people I was a woman who didn't want children, a woman who had willingly stepped away from the company, a woman who had abandoned the foundation she'd created.
He had constructed an entirely different version of me.
And he had done it while I was still living in his penthouse.
"Why are you showing me this now?"" I asked.
Evelyn reached for her coffee.
"Because the board meeting is next Thursday.""
"How did you know?""
"Because Liam has been preparing for it for months. He wants the restructuring approved before the end of the quarter.""
"And if it isn't?""
"Then he may lose the ability to move certain assets into the new structure.""
I stared at the documents.
"Does Khloe know?""
Evelyn gave me a tired look.
"Khloe knows whatever Liam tells her.""
That answer stayed with me.
I took the flash drive straight to Rachel's office.
She was in a meeting when I arrived, but she came out as soon as her assistant told her I was there.
I placed the documents on her desk.
"Please tell me I'm misunderstanding something.""
Rachel read through them.
Her expression changed several times.
First curiosity.
Then concentration.
Finally, anger.
"Where did you get these?""
"Evelyn. She worked in Liam's executive office.""
Rachel stopped.
"Evelyn Parker?""
"You know her?""
"I've seen her name in some of the foundation filings.""
She opened her laptop.
"Olivia, I need you to listen carefully. These documents raise serious questions, but we need to authenticate them. We cannot assume every email tells the complete story.""
"I understand.""
"And the trust provisions are separate from your divorce settlement. We need a specialist to review them.""
"Okay.""
Rachel removed her glasses.
"But there's one thing I can tell you right now.""
"What?""
"Your former husband had a reason to keep your name away from the foundation's leadership discussions.""
I sat down.
"Because of the twins?""
"Possibly. And because you may have more rights than he wanted you to exercise.""
I looked out the window.
For six months, I had believed Liam wanted to get rid of me because I no longer looked good beside him.
Now I was beginning to suspect that was only part of the story.
Rachel picked up another document.
"There's also a reference to a meeting with the trust administrator.""
"When?""
"Three weeks before your divorce was finalized.""
She turned the paper toward me.
The meeting had been attended by Liam, his personal attorney, and a representative of the family trust.
My name was listed as a subject of discussion.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
*Potential pregnancy risk — obtain final declarations before closing.*
I felt my throat tighten.
"Rachel...""
She looked at me.
"I know.""
I stared at the note.
"Does this mean he suspected?""
"It means someone considered the possibility important enough to document.""
I leaned back.
My hands were trembling.
Rachel reached across the desk.
"Olivia, we're going to investigate this properly. But I want you to promise me something.""
"What?""
"Don't meet Liam alone. Don't sign anything. And don't let him convince you that this is just a misunderstanding between two people who used to be married.""
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Liam.
I stared at his name.
Rachel gestured for me to answer.
I put it on speaker.
"Hello?""
"Olivia.""
His voice was unusually controlled.
"We need to talk.""
"About what?""
"The board meeting.""
I exchanged a glance with Rachel.
"What about it?""
"You received the invitation?""
"Yes.""
"Good. I need you to decline.""
I almost smiled.
"Excuse me?""
"You don't need to attend.""
"Apparently, the board thinks I do.""
"That's an administrative mistake.""
"Really?""
"Yes. The foundation's restructuring has nothing to do with you anymore.""
Rachel silently pointed at the documents.
I leaned forward.
"Then why does the board need my approval?""
There was a pause.
Liam exhaled.
"Olivia, please don't make this complicated.""
I looked at Rachel.
She mouthed two words.
Ask him.
I took a breath.
"Why did you tell the board I never wanted children?""
Silence.
Complete silence.
For the first time since I had known him, Liam seemed unable to find an immediate answer.
"Who told you that?""
"Does it matter?""
"Olivia, where did you get that information?""
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
"Is it true?""
He lowered his voice.
"We need to discuss this privately.""
"No. We need to discuss it honestly.""
"You're being influenced by people who don't understand the situation.""
"Then explain it to me.""
Another pause.
Finally, he said:
"I was trying to protect the company.""
I stared at the phone.
The company.
Not our marriage.
Not me.
Not the children.
The company.
"From what, Liam?""
"From uncertainty.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you know the trust could be affected if we had children?""
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I felt Rachel's hand settle on my shoulder.
Then Liam spoke again.
"Olivia, listen to me. The children are my responsibility. I'll make sure they're taken care of.""
"That's very generous.""
"I'm serious.""
"So am I.""
"Name what you need.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Money. A house. Medical expenses.
Whatever you need. We can arrange everything.""
I stared at the phone.
There it was.
The Liam Hayes I remembered.
The man who believed every problem could be solved with a financial transaction.
"You think this is about money?""
"I think you're going to need help.""
"I have help.""
"Olivia—"
"Goodbye, Liam.""
I ended the call.
Rachel remained silent for several seconds.
Then she closed the folder.
"He's worried.""
"About the babies?""
"About what happens if you attend that meeting.""
I looked at her.
"Then I'm going.""
Rachel nodded.
"That's what I thought.""
The following afternoon, Liam arrived at my apartment.
I knew it was him because the building concierge called before allowing anyone upstairs.
I was sitting on the sofa, reading a book about newborn twins, when the intercom buzzed.
"Ms. Carter, there's a Mr. Hayes downstairs.""
My stomach tightened.
"Tell him I'm unavailable.""
A moment later, the concierge called again.
"He's insisting.""
I sighed.
"Please tell him to leave.""
Then Liam's voice came through the intercom.
"Olivia, I know you're there. We need to talk.""
I stood carefully.
"You're not coming up.""
He went quiet.
Then he said:
"Please. Five minutes.""
I looked toward the two ultrasound photographs on the coffee table.
Five minutes.
I'd given him six years.
I pressed the intercom.
"Come up.""
When the elevator doors opened, Liam stepped into the hallway.
He looked different from the man at the gala.
No tuxedo.
No cameras.
No Khloe.
Just a dark coat, an expensive watch, and a face that looked as though he hadn't slept.
He glanced at my stomach.
"Can I come in?""
I stepped aside.
He entered slowly.
His eyes moved around the apartment.
It was smaller than the penthouse we'd shared.
The furniture was modest.
There were boxes in one corner, and two baby blankets lay folded on a chair.
A pair of tiny white socks sat on the coffee table.
Liam stared at them.
"Twins," he whispered.
"Yes.""
He moved closer.
"Do you know the genders?""
I hesitated.
Then answered.
"A boy and a girl.""
His eyes lifted.
"A boy and a girl?""
"Yes.""
He looked toward the ultrasound pictures.
"Can I see?""
I handed him one.
He held it carefully.
For a moment, he didn't look like a billionaire.
He looked like a man trying to understand something that had happened without him.
His thumb moved over the edge of the photograph.
"That's incredible.""
I said nothing.
He looked at the picture again.
"Which one is this?""
"Your son.""
His mouth trembled.
Then he set the photograph down.
"Olivia, I want to be involved.""
I crossed my arms.
"Then start by telling me the truth.""
He looked up.
"About what?""
"The trust.""
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
"Where did you hear about that?""
"That's not an answer.""
He removed his coat and placed it over the back of a chair.
"Olivia, the company is complicated.""
"I know. I helped you build it.""
He looked away.
"The trust was established long before we met.""
"And my children are connected to it?""
He didn't answer.
"Are they?""
"Potentially.""
I took a step toward him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it wasn't relevant.""
"Not relevant?""
"Not at the time.""
I laughed softly.
"When exactly would it have become relevant? After they were born? After you transferred the assets? After you had made sure I couldn't challenge anything?""
"That's not what happened.""
"Then explain the clause in our divorce agreement.""
He stared at me.
For several seconds, the apartment was completely silent.
Then he said:
"I didn't know you were pregnant.""
I nodded.
"But you knew I could have been.""
His face tightened.
"Olivia—"
"Did you?""
He looked down.
That was all I needed.
I felt something inside me break.
Not my heart.
That had happened months ago.
Something else.
The last remaining piece of trust I had kept for him.
"Get out," I whispered.
He stepped closer.
"Please, let me explain.""
"No.""
"Olivia, I made mistakes.""
"You made decisions.""
"I was under pressure.""
"So was I.""
He looked toward my stomach again.
"I don't want my children growing up without their father.""
I held his gaze.
"Then you should have thought about that before you made sure their mother had no place in your life.""
His jaw tightened.
He reached for his coat.
At the door, he stopped.
"Don't go to the board meeting.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because you don't understand what you're walking into.""
I looked at him.
"Then explain it.""
He opened his mouth.
But no explanation came.
Instead, he said something that chilled me.
"If you attend that meeting, you could lose everything.""
I stared at him.
"Everything I have?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
His eyes dropped to my stomach.
"Everything they have.""
Then he walked out.
I remained standing in the hallway long after the elevator doors closed.
My hands were cold.
My babies began moving, one small kick followed by another.
I placed my palm against my stomach.
"It's okay," I whispered.
But I wasn't sure who I was trying to reassure.
A few minutes later, Rachel called.
"Olivia, I just received something from the trust administrator.""
"What?""
"An emergency notice. The board has moved the meeting forward.""
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
I sat down.
"Why?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Because Liam has requested an immediate vote on the transfer of the foundation's controlling assets.""
My heart started pounding.
"And?""
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
Rachel's voice dropped.
"The trust administrator has formally recognized your unborn twins as potential direct beneficiaries.""
I stopped breathing.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
"Olivia, if those children are born under the trust's eligibility provisions, Liam may not have the final say over the company he built.""
May you like
And before I could respond, she added:
"Which means tomorrow morning, your ex-husband is going to do everything he can to stop you from entering that boardroom.""
