Chapter 8: The Person Who Wanted Me Gone

The name at the bottom of the document felt impossible.

I stared at it.

Then I looked away.

Then back again.

As if my eyes could somehow rearrange the letters into something else.

They didn't.

The signature belonged to someone I had trusted even more than Ethan.

Someone who had been there before Vanessa.

Before the business.

Before the house.

Before everything.

*Robert Carter.*

Vanessa's brother.

Mia's uncle.

The same man who had been receiving payments from the hidden account.

The same man who had apparently helped create the plan to take control of my life.

I closed the laptop slowly.

Mia noticed.

"What is it?""

I looked at her.

"Your uncle.""

Her face changed.

"What about him?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Because I knew what I was about to say would hurt her.

"He's involved.""

Mia stared at me.

"No.""

I understood that reaction.

Because accepting the truth meant admitting that almost everyone around her had been lying.

"No," she repeated.

I turned the laptop around.

She read the document.

The color drained from her face.

"That's not possible.""

Emily looked at her.

"Mia...""

"My uncle helped us when my dad left.""

She shook her head.

"He was the only person who stayed.""

I sat down.

"Sometimes people who help us are the hardest people to question.""

Mia looked at the screen again.

Then she whispered:

"Why?""

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was probably the same reason behind everything.

Money.

Control.

Greed.

But there was still one thing I didn't understand.

Why had Robert spent years pretending to care?

Why had Ethan spent twelve years beside me?

Why had Vanessa married me?

I needed answers.

And I needed them before they had time to destroy whatever evidence remained.

I picked up my phone.

I called Ethan again.

He answered almost immediately.

"You found Robert.""

It wasn't a question.

My grip tightened.

"You knew.""

"I suspected.""

"You knew enough to warn me.""

"I tried.""

"No.""

My voice became cold.

"You protected them.""

"I protected you.""

"You don't get to say that.""

A long pause.

Then Ethan said:

"Daniel, listen carefully. You are in more danger than you realize.""

I looked at Emily.

"What does that mean?""

"Robert wasn't just moving money.""

"Then what was he doing?""

"He was building a case.""

"A case?""

"To prove you were incapable of managing your own assets.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because your father's trust has a condition.""

I closed my eyes.

"What condition?""

"If you are declared mentally incapable, the trustee takes control.""

My heart dropped.

"Who is the trustee?""

Silence.

Then Ethan answered.

"Robert.""

The room went quiet.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The missing money.

The fake documents.

The accusations.

The plan to make me look reckless.

They weren't stealing from me.

They were creating a reason to take everything legally.

Emily whispered:

"They were trying to make you look crazy.""

I looked at her.

"Yes.""

Mia covered her mouth.

"Mom knew.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Her eyes filled.

"She knew the whole time.""

I didn't say anything.

Because there was no comfort I could offer.

Not for her.

Not for Emily.

Not even for myself.

My phone buzzed.

A message from the bank.

*Account review completed. Additional suspicious activity detected.*

I opened it.

Attached were documents.

One was a transfer request.

Another was a legal form.

The third one made my hands shake.

It was a medical evaluation request.

Not for Vanessa.

Not for Ethan.

For me.

The date was scheduled for the following week.

The reason:

*Concerns regarding Daniel Carter's judgment and financial decisions.*

Emily read it over my shoulder.

"Dad...""

I felt anger rise.

Not explosive anger.

Something colder.

They had planned everything.

They stole from my daughter.

They emptied our emergency savings.

They created fake accounts.

And then they planned to use the consequences of their own actions against me.

I grabbed my keys.

"Where are you going?""

Emily stood.

"Dad.""

"I'm going to find Vanessa.""

Mia looked scared.

"Should you?""

I stopped.

Because she was right.

Going there angry was exactly what they expected.

I had spent my life solving problems by working harder.

By confronting challenges.

By believing honesty would win.

But this wasn't a normal problem.

This was a trap.

I sat back down.

"We need evidence.""

Emily nodded.

"Then let's get it.""

I looked at her.

The determination in her eyes surprised me.

A week ago, she was a teenager worried about buying a laptop.

Now she was helping me uncover a conspiracy.

I hated that she had been forced into this.

But I was proud of her.

We spent the next several hours copying everything.

Files.

Messages.

Documents.

Screenshots.

Every piece of evidence Vanessa, Ethan, and Robert had left behind.

Then Mia suddenly stopped.

"Wait.""

I looked up.

"What?""

She was staring at the laptop.

"There was another folder.""

"What folder?""

She hesitated.

"I thought it was just pictures.""

She opened a hidden directory.

Inside were photos.

Not random photos.

Photos of me.

At work.

At home.

Driving.

Meeting clients.

I felt a chill.

"Why would they have these?""

Mia clicked another one.

A photo of me asleep on the couch.

Another of me arguing on the phone.

Another of me looking exhausted outside my office.

Emily stepped back.

"They were watching you.""

I stared at the screen.

This wasn't just financial planning.

It was surveillance.

They had been collecting moments.

Trying to build a story.

Trying to find proof of something that didn't exist.

Then Mia opened the final picture.

It was a screenshot of a message.

From Vanessa.

To Robert.

The message read:

*He is becoming suspicious. If Daniel finds the trust documents, we move immediately.*

Below it was Robert's response.

*Then make sure he never reaches the documents.*

Nobody spoke.

The meaning was clear.

This wasn't about money anymore.

They were afraid.

Afraid I would discover the truth.

Afraid I would find what my father left behind.

And afraid I would expose them.

My phone rang.

This time, it wasn't unknown.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Panicked.

"Daniel, you need to listen to me.""

I almost laughed.

"Now you want me to listen?""

"Robert lied to me.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He didn't tell me everything.""

"Why would I believe you?""

"Because he is going to destroy all of us.""

The room went silent.

Emily looked at me.

Mia stood up.

"What happened?""

Vanessa continued.

"I found out what Robert was really planning.""

I narrowed my eyes.

"You're telling me you didn't know?""

"I knew about the money.""

Her honesty surprised me.

"But not this.""

"What is this?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Robert doesn't want your assets.""

"Then what does he want?""

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

"He wants the trust.""

I waited.

"And?""

Her voice dropped.

"He wants the beneficiary changed.""

I felt my heart race.

"Changed to who?""

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

"His name.""

I looked at Emily.

The entire plan became clearer.

Robert wasn't helping Vanessa.

He was using her.

Using Ethan.

Using everyone.

Vanessa continued:

"Daniel, you have to believe me.""

I almost ended the call.

Then she said something that stopped me.

"Your father knew Robert would do this.""

My blood froze.

"What?""

"Your father left instructions.""

I looked at the old envelope.

The missing documents.

The hidden trust.

"What instructions?""

Vanessa's voice shook.

"He left a message for you.""

I didn't speak.

"Where is it?""

Another pause.

Then Vanessa said:

"Robert has it.""

The call ended.

I stood there silently.

Because after everything Vanessa had done, I still couldn't ignore one thing.

She was afraid.

Really afraid.

And if Vanessa Carter was scared of Robert...

Then maybe we had underestimated the person behind the entire plan.

I looked at the evidence spread across the table.

The stolen money.

The forged documents.

The surveillance photos.

Then I saw a new message appear on my phone.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop looking for your father's trust, or Emily will pay the price.*

I felt the room disappear.

Because they had just crossed the one line I knew they would never cross.

May you like

They threatened my daughter.

And now I knew exactly what I had to do.
