Chapter 5: The Secret Account Under My Name
I stayed awake until sunrise.
Not because I was trying to solve the mystery.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emily standing on the staircase with tears in her eyes.
I saw her holding her phone.
I saw the number.
$12.67.
A number that represented months of hard work.
A number that represented every morning she woke up before the sun.
And I saw Vanessa’s face when she admitted taking it.
No regret.
No fear.
Just a belief that she was entitled to it.
But now there was something worse.
A hidden account.
An account opened under my identity.
Money moved without my knowledge.
And someone had carefully covered their tracks.
At 6:42 in the morning, I heard footsteps.
I looked up from the kitchen table.
Emily stood there wearing yesterday's sweatshirt.
She looked exhausted.
"You didn't sleep.""
It wasn't a question.
I shook my head.
"Neither did you.""
She walked into the kitchen and sat across from me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she asked:
"Are we okay?""
The question caught me off guard.
"What do you mean?""
She looked down at the table.
"I mean... our family.""
I felt something break inside me.
Because she wasn't asking about money anymore.
She was asking if the place she called home was still safe.
I reached across the table and held her hand.
"We're going to be okay.""
She looked at me.
"You don't know that.""
"No.""
I squeezed her hand.
"But I know I'm not going anywhere.""
Her eyes filled slightly.
"I really thought she cared about me.""
I knew exactly who she meant.
"Emily...""
"She used to ask about my grades.""
"She still could have cared.""
Emily shook her head.
"No.""
Her voice was quiet.
"People who care don't do things like that.""
I didn't argue.
Because she was right.
A few hours later, I was sitting inside the bank's private office with a folder of documents in front of me.
The bank manager, Thomas Reed, looked uncomfortable.
Not nervous.
Concerned.
The kind of concern people have when they realize something serious happened under their watch.
"Mr. Carter," he said, sliding a document across the desk.
"This account was opened six months ago.""
I stared at the paper.
"My identity was used.""
"Yes.""
"How?""
He folded his hands.
"Someone provided your personal information.""
"Who?""
"We don't know yet.""
I looked at him.
"You must have records.""
"We do.""
"Then show me.""
He hesitated.
"Because of privacy laws, we need to complete the investigation.""
I leaned forward.
"My daughter's savings were stolen.""
"I understand.""
"No.""
My voice became sharper.
"You don't.""
I pointed at the documents.
"Someone used my name to create an account. Money was moved from my family accounts into that account. I need to know who.""
Thomas looked at me for several seconds.
Then he opened another file.
"There is something we can tell you.""
"What?""
"The account was accessed mostly from one location.""
My heart tightened.
"Where?""
He turned the laptop around.
A map appeared.
A familiar area.
Not my office.
Not a bank branch.
Not somewhere random.
My home.
I stared at the screen.
"You're saying someone accessed it from my house?""
Thomas nodded.
"Multiple times.""
I felt cold.
Someone had been sitting in my house.
Using my internet.
Using my information.
Moving my money.
While I was away.
"Can you tell which device?""
He clicked another file.
"Most of the activity came from a laptop.""
"What kind?""
He looked at the report.
"A MacBook.""
My stomach dropped.
I didn't speak.
Because suddenly the shiny silver computer on my living room table looked different.
Thomas noticed my reaction.
"Do you know something?""
I stood.
"I need a copy of everything.""
"We can provide that.""
"Today.""
He nodded.
Before I left, he stopped me.
"Mr. Carter.""
I turned.
"Be careful.""
The warning was quiet.
"What do you mean?""
He looked at the documents.
"Whoever did this wasn't making random mistakes.""
I already knew.
They weren't.
They were confident.
They believed nobody would question them.
When I arrived home, Mia was sitting on the porch.
She looked like she had been waiting.
I parked the car and walked toward her.
She stood.
"Did you find something?""
I nodded.
"Maybe.""
Her face changed.
"What happened?""
I sat beside her.
"Mia, I need to ask you something.""
"Okay.""
"Your mother bought you a laptop.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
"Did she ever ask you to log into anything else?""
Mia went still.
That reaction told me everything.
"What?""
She looked away.
"I...""
"Mia.""
She took a deep breath.
"Yes.""
My chest tightened.
"When?""
"Before the laptop.""
"What did she ask you to do?""
Mia rubbed her hands together nervously.
"She said she needed help because she forgot a password.""
"Whose password?""
She didn't answer.
"Mia.""
"Yours.""
I stared at her.
"My password?""
She nodded.
"She said she needed to check a payment.""
"What payment?""
"I don't know.""
I stood up.
"Did you log into my account?""
"No.""
She looked terrified.
"I swear.""
"Then what did you do?""
"Mom gave me a login page.""
I froze.
"What login page?""
"It looked like a bank website.""
My blood ran cold.
"Looked like?""
Mia nodded.
"I typed in the information she gave me.""
"When?""
"Three months ago.""
Three months.
The same time.
I took a step back.
"Mia, where is that laptop?""
She looked confused.
"Upstairs.""
"Bring it.""
A few minutes later, she returned holding the MacBook.
The same one that had started everything.
The same one Emily had looked at with pain in her eyes.
I opened it.
Mia stood beside me.
"What are you doing?""
"Finding out what your mother didn't want us to see.""
The laptop was almost new.
Clean.
No obvious files.
No obvious evidence.
But people always made one mistake.
They believed deleting something meant it disappeared.
I opened the browser history.
Most of it was ordinary.
Shopping.
Videos.
School websites.
Then I found something strange.
A saved login page.
A banking portal.
Not mine.
Not Emily's.
The hidden account.
I clicked.
A password prompt appeared.
Mia stepped back.
"I don't know that password.""
I looked closer.
There was a saved username.
Not Vanessa's.
Not mine.
Someone else's.
I felt my heartbeat increase.
"Who is this?""
Mia looked at the screen.
Then her face changed.
"What?""
She pointed.
"I know that name.""
I turned toward her.
"Who?""
She swallowed.
"My uncle.""
I frowned.
"Your uncle?""
She nodded slowly.
"My mom's brother.""
"Why would he be involved?""
Mia didn't answer.
Because she was staring at something else.
A folder.
Hidden deep inside the laptop.
A folder named:
*Family Plan.*
I clicked it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Bank statements.
Screenshots.
Notes.
My hands went cold.
Vanessa hadn't been hiding random purchases.
She had been organizing everything.
I opened the first document.
It was a spreadsheet.
At the top was a title.
*Carter Assets.*
Below it were columns.
Accounts.
Amounts.
Dates.
Then I saw a line that made me stop breathing.
*Emily College Fund: $2,340 — Transfer Complete.*
But below that was another entry.
One I didn't understand.
*Final Transfer Pending.*
I scrolled down.
There was a note written at the bottom.
A note from Vanessa.
And the words made my entire body go cold.
*Once Daniel discovers the missing money, blame will shift. Keep Mia prepared.*
I stared at the screen.
Prepared for what?
Then another file opened automatically.
A video.
The date was from two weeks earlier.
The screen showed Vanessa sitting at our kitchen table.
Talking to someone off camera.
And when the person stepped into view, I recognized him immediately.
My blood turned cold.
Because the man standing beside my wife was someone I had invited into my home.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had helped me build my business.
And Vanessa looked at him and said:
"After Daniel signs the papers, everything will finally belong to us.""
I stopped the video.
I couldn't move.
Because the stolen money was never the real plan.
The money was just the beginning.
May you like
They weren't trying to take my daughter's savings.
They were trying to take everything I owned.
