Chapter 7: The Secret From Before Vanessa

The photograph stayed on the screen.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

Because the person standing beside Ethan wasn't just someone from my past.

It was someone I had spent years trying to forget.

My father.

I stared at the image.

A younger version of him.

A younger version of Ethan.

And a date written beneath the file.

*2009.*

The year before I met Vanessa.

The year before my company became successful.

The year before my life changed completely.

Emily noticed my expression.

"Dad?""

I looked at her.

"Do you know who that is?""

She leaned closer.

"My grandfather?""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Mia looked between us.

"What's happening?""

I closed the laptop.

Because suddenly, this wasn't just about stolen money anymore.

This was about a history I never knew existed.

"Where did this picture come from?""

Mia shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Was there anything else in the folder?""

"I didn't open everything.""

I looked at the laptop again.

"Then we need to.""

Emily sat beside me.

"Who was your dad?""

The question was simple.

But the answer wasn't.

"My father was complicated.""

I looked toward the window.

"When I was younger, we weren't close.""

"What happened?""

I hesitated.

Because I had spent years telling myself that part of my life was finished.

"My father owned a small construction company.""

Mia listened quietly.

"He was successful.""

"Like you?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I looked at the laptop.

"More successful than me.""

Emily frowned.

"What happened?""

I sighed.

"He lost everything.""

"Why?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Because even after all these years, the memory still carried anger.

"He trusted the wrong people.""

The irony wasn't lost on me.

I had spent my whole life believing I learned from my father's mistakes.

But somehow, I repeated them.

I trusted.

I ignored signs.

I believed loyalty meant people couldn't hurt me.

I opened the folder again.

There were more documents.

Most were financial records.

But one file caught my attention.

*Daniel Carter Background.*

My own name.

My own life.

I clicked it.

The first page contained information from fifteen years earlier.

Employment history.

Family information.

Assets.

Relationships.

Then I saw a note.

A handwritten note scanned into the document.

*He doesn't know what his father left behind.*

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

Emily looked at the screen.

"I don't know.""

I scrolled.

The next page was a conversation.

Between Ethan and Vanessa.

The date was two years before we married.

I read the first message.

*Ethan: Are you sure he's the one?*

Vanessa:

*Yes. He's exactly where we need him.*

My chest tightened.

I kept reading.

*Ethan: And the father?*

*Vanessa: The past doesn't matter. Daniel only cares about building his own family.*

I stopped.

Emily looked at me.

"Dad?""

I continued scrolling.

The next message was shorter.

But it changed everything.

*Ethan: Once he gets access to the inheritance documents, we're done waiting.*

Inheritance.

I stared at that word.

Because it didn't make sense.

My father died without leaving me anything.

At least that's what I had always believed.

I stood up.

"Where is my father's old paperwork?""

Emily looked confused.

"What?""

"I need to find something.""

I went to the office.

The room where I kept old files.

Birth certificates.

Tax documents.

Anything important.

My hands moved faster than my thoughts.

I opened drawers.

Folders.

Boxes.

Then I found it.

An old envelope.

My father's handwriting was on the front.

*For Daniel.*

I had seen it before.

Years ago.

After his funeral.

But when I opened it, it had been empty.

I remembered.

The papers were missing.

I had assumed someone misplaced them.

Now I wasn't so sure.

I turned around.

"Mia.""

She looked up.

"Yes?""

"Did your mother ever talk about my father?""

Her expression changed.

"Not really.""

"Think.""

Mia looked uncomfortable.

"She mentioned him once.""

"When?""

"Before she married you.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What did she say?""

Mia looked down.

"She said your family had secrets.""

Emily stood.

"What kind of secrets?""

Mia shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at the empty envelope.

The missing papers.

The hidden account.

The fake documents.

Everything connected.

Someone had known.

Someone had been waiting.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

A man's voice responded.

"Daniel.""

I froze.

I knew that voice.

"Ethan.""

There was silence.

Then he sighed.

"I was hoping we could talk before you found everything.""

I gripped the phone.

"You knew I would find out?""

"Eventually.""

"You planned this.""

"Not everything.""

I laughed bitterly.

"How comforting.""

"Daniel, listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice hardened.

"I listened to you for twelve years.""

The line went quiet.

"You were my friend.""

"I was.""

"Were?""

I looked at Emily.

At Mia.

At the laptop.

"Tell me why.""

Ethan sighed.

"I didn't start this.""

"Then who did?""

Another silence.

And then he said:

"Your father.""

The room froze.

"My father is dead.""

"I know.""

"Then what are you talking about?""

Ethan's voice became lower.

"There are things you never knew about him.""

I looked at the old envelope.

"What things?""

"He didn't lose his company.""

I stopped breathing.

"What?""

"He gave it away.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"That's impossible.""

"No.""

Ethan said quietly.

"It's the truth.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew someone was trying to destroy him.""

I looked at the picture again.

My father and Ethan.

Together.

"You knew him.""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"I worked for him.""

The room went silent.

My entire understanding of my past shifted.

"You worked for my father?""

"Yes.""

"And then you became my partner.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Ethan didn't answer.

That silence told me enough.

"You didn't meet me by accident.""

"No.""

The honesty hurt.

"Then why?""

Ethan's voice changed.

For the first time, I heard something other than confidence.

Regret.

"Because I made a promise.""

"To who?""

"My father.""

I froze.

"Mine?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Emily.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

"What promise?""

Ethan took a breath.

"To protect you.""

I almost laughed.

"Protect me?""

I looked around the room.

"By helping my wife steal from me?""

"I didn't know what Vanessa would do.""

"But you knew she was with me.""

"Yes.""

"You helped her.""

"I tried to control the damage.""

The words made me angry.

"Control the damage?""

My voice rose.

"My daughter lost her college savings.""

"I know.""

"You watched this happen?""

"No.""

"Then what did you do?""

Ethan didn't answer.

And I knew.

He had done something.

Something worse.

"What did you do, Ethan?""

The silence stretched.

Then he said:

"I moved money.""

My blood went cold.

"What money?""

"Your father's money.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What are you talking about?""

"Daniel...""

"No.""

I walked toward the window.

"Tell me everything.""

Ethan sighed.

"Your father left you something.""

"What?""

"A trust.""

My mind went blank.

"A trust?""

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

Another pause.

Then Ethan said the words that changed everything.

"Vanessa knows where it is.""

I stared at the darkness outside.

Because suddenly the stolen savings.

The fake documents.

The hidden account.

The emergency fund.

None of it was the main plan.

It was all a distraction.

They weren't trying to steal what I had built.

They were trying to find what my father had hidden.

I looked back at the laptop.

At the files.

At the picture.

Then I saw one more document I hadn't opened.

A file created just three days earlier.

The title was simple.

*Trust Location Confirmed.*

I clicked it.

And the first line made my blood run cold.

*Daniel Carter's inheritance will be transferred once he is removed from control of his own assets.*

I stared at the words.

Then Emily grabbed my arm.

"Dad.""

I looked up.

"What?""

She pointed at the screen.

"There's a name at the bottom.""

I looked.

A signature.

The person who created the plan.

Not Vanessa.

Not Ethan.

Someone else.

Someone I had never suspected.

And when I saw the name, I realized this betrayal went deeper than I ever imagined.

May you like

Because the person behind everything wasn't trying to take my money.

They were trying to erase me from my own family.
