Chapter 4: The Person Emily Never Suspected
The name on the screen stayed there.
I read it once.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were telling me.
*Mia Carter.*
My daughter’s stepsister.
Vanessa’s daughter.
The girl sitting ten feet away from me only a few minutes earlier, looking devastated as she held the laptop she thought her mother had bought with innocent money.
I stared at the notification.
*New device access: Mia Carter’s phone.*
The kitchen suddenly felt unbearably quiet.
I had spent the last hour thinking I understood the story.
Vanessa had stolen Emily’s savings.
Vanessa had abused her access.
Vanessa had taken advantage of everyone’s trust.
But now there was another name.
Another person.
Another piece of the puzzle.
I walked toward the guest room.
The door was slightly open.
Mia was sitting on the edge of the bed, still wearing the same clothes from earlier.
She looked up when she saw me.
"Dad?""
I hated that she still called me that.
Not because she wasn't family.
But because I suddenly wondered how much she knew.
"Mia, can I ask you something?""
Her face tightened.
"Okay.""
I held up my phone.
"Why did you log into Emily's account?""
The color disappeared from her face.
"What?""
I turned the screen toward her.
The silence that followed was immediate.
She looked at the notification.
Then at me.
Then away.
"Mia.""
"I didn't.""
Her answer came too quickly.
I sat down across from her.
"The bank recorded your device.""
"I didn't take her money.""
"I didn't ask that.""
She looked confused.
I lowered my voice.
"I asked why you accessed her account.""
Mia looked down at her hands.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"Because Mom told me to.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
I leaned back.
"She told you to?""
Mia nodded slowly.
"When?""
"Last week.""
"Why?""
She swallowed.
"She said she needed me to check something.""
I stared at her.
"Check what?""
"Emily's savings.""
My chest tightened.
"Why?""
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
"Mia.""
"I swear.""
Her voice cracked.
"I didn't know she was going to take it.""
I watched her carefully.
There was fear in her expression.
Real fear.
Not the kind someone shows when they are caught.
The kind someone shows when they realize they were involved in something they didn't understand.
"What exactly did your mother ask you to do?""
Mia wiped her eyes.
"She asked me if Emily had enough money saved.""
"Enough for what?""
"I don't know.""
"When did she ask?""
"Two weeks before the laptop.""
I stood up.
"Did you tell her the amount?""
Mia looked away.
That answer was enough.
"Mia.""
"I told her.""
Her voice was barely audible.
"She kept asking.""
"What did you say?""
"That Emily had around two thousand dollars.""
I closed my eyes.
Emily's words echoed in my head.
I thought she was proud of me.
She had no idea Vanessa wasn't cheering for her.
She was calculating.
"Did you know she was going to transfer it?""
"No.""
Mia looked at me.
"I thought she wanted to surprise her.""
I frowned.
"Surprise her?""
"Mom said she wanted to make sure Emily had enough money for college.""
The irony was almost painful.
"She told you that?""
Mia nodded.
"She said Emily was too young to understand money and that she was helping manage it.""
I looked at the floor.
Vanessa hadn't just stolen.
She had manipulated.
She had created a story where everyone believed she was helping.
Even her own daughter.
"Why didn't you tell Emily?""
Mia looked ashamed.
"Because I thought it was normal.""
That sentence stopped me.
"What?""
Mia looked at me.
"Mom has always done things like that.""
"Like what?""
She hesitated.
"Taking control.""
I sat back down.
"What do you mean?""
Mia stared at the wall.
"When I was fourteen, I saved money from babysitting.""
"Okay.""
"Mom said I was too young to waste it.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
"She moved it.""
"Where?""
"I don't know.""
"And you never asked?""
Mia laughed sadly.
"I did.""
"What did she say?""
"She said parents know better.""
The room went quiet.
Because suddenly Emily wasn't the only person Vanessa had controlled.
She had just hidden it better.
I looked at Mia.
"Why did you keep this from me?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because I was scared.""
"Of your mother?""
She nodded.
That answer hurt.
Not because I didn't believe her.
Because I did.
Mia had grown up learning the same lesson Emily had just learned.
That Vanessa's love came with conditions.
That questioning her created consequences.
I walked back to the kitchen.
Emily was sitting at the table.
She looked up.
"Was it her?""
I stopped.
She already knew.
"Emily...""
"Was it Mia?""
I sat down.
"She didn't take your money.""
Emily looked confused.
"Then why did she access my account?""
I hesitated.
Because there was no easy way to say it.
"Vanessa asked her to.""
Emily stared at me.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she looked toward the hallway.
"Mia knew?""
"She knew some things.""
Emily's eyes filled with hurt.
"She knew I was saving?""
"Yes.""
"And she didn't tell me?""
"She didn't understand what was happening.""
Emily looked down.
"I trusted her.""
I didn't know what to say.
Because that was the cruelest part.
Every person Vanessa touched ended up feeling betrayed.
Even the people she claimed to protect.
A few minutes later, Mia came into the kitchen.
Emily looked at her.
The room became heavy.
"Mia...""
Mia stopped.
"I know.""
Emily shook her head.
"No, you don't.""
Mia looked down.
"I'm sorry.""
"You knew.""
"I knew you were saving.""
"You checked my account.""
Mia closed her eyes.
"I know.""
Emily stood.
"Why?""
The question wasn't angry.
It was hurt.
Mia looked like she might cry.
"Because Mom told me to.""
"You could have said no.""
"I should have.""
"Yes.""
The honesty between them hurt more than an argument would have.
Mia nodded.
"You're right.""
Emily looked away.
"I thought you were my sister.""
Mia's face broke.
"I thought so too.""
Nobody spoke after that.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Am I speaking with Daniel Carter?""
"Yes.""
"This is Mark Reynolds from the bank's fraud department.""
My stomach tightened.
"What's going on?""
"We reviewed the unusual activity you reported.""
"And?""
There was a pause.
A pause that professionals used when they were about to deliver bad news.
"Mr. Carter, the withdrawals from your accounts weren't made by someone with basic access.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means whoever did this knew exactly how your accounts were structured.""
I looked at Emily.
Then Mia.
"Can you tell me who authorized the transfers?""
"We're still investigating.""
"Then why are you calling?""
Another pause.
"Because we found something unusual.""
"What?""
"Several transfers were made before your wife purchased the laptop.""
I gripped the phone.
"How many?""
"Five.""
"And the dates?""
The man read them slowly.
Each date felt like another piece of my family falling apart.
Then he said:
"The first transfer happened three months ago.""
I froze.
Three months.
The same time Emily started saving seriously.
"Mr. Carter...""
My voice became quiet.
"Yes?""
"There is one more thing.""
"What?""
"The account that received the money wasn't registered to your wife.""
I looked at the screen.
At the family sitting in front of me.
At the people I thought I knew.
"Whose account was it?""
The bank representative hesitated.
Then answered.
"It's an account opened under your name.""
My heart stopped.
"My name?""
"Yes.""
I stood slowly.
"That's impossible.""
"Mr. Carter...""
The man's voice lowered.
"Someone created a hidden account using your identity.""
I looked at Emily.
Then Mia.
Then the empty doorway where Vanessa had disappeared.
Because suddenly I understood something terrifying.
Vanessa hadn't just taken money.
She had planned this.
And whoever helped her had been preparing long before Emily ever opened her banking app.
The question was no longer who stole my daughter's savings.
May you like
The question was:
How long had my own family been stealing from me?
