Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Records
The name on the screen made my entire body go cold.
For a moment, I convinced myself I was reading it wrong.
I blinked.
Then I refreshed the page.
The name stayed there.
*Vanessa Carter.*
Not as the person who received the money.
Not as the person who made a purchase.
As an authorized user.
Someone who had been granted access to the account almost two years earlier.
I stared at the screen.
Mia was still sitting on the couch, holding herself like she was trying to disappear.
Emily stood beside the staircase, watching my face.
She didn't ask what I saw.
She already knew it was bad.
"Dad?""
I looked up.
Emily's voice was small.
"What is it?""
I locked my phone.
Not because I wanted to hide it.
Because I needed a second to understand what I was seeing.
"Vanessa wasn't just using your account," I said.
Emily frowned.
"What do you mean?""
I looked at the front door where Vanessa had walked out less than a minute ago.
"She had access.""
Mia stood up.
"Access to what?""
"The accounts.""
Her face went pale.
"All of them?""
I didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
Mia covered her mouth.
"No...""
I walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.
My business trip had been exhausting.
Three days of meetings.
Three days of presentations.
Three days of pretending I wasn't constantly worried about missing something important at home.
And now I realized I had missed everything.
I opened the banking app again.
The emergency fund.
Emily's savings account.
Then the household account.
The pattern became obvious.
Vanessa had not suddenly decided one afternoon to take money.
She had been testing boundaries.
Small withdrawals.
Small purchases.
Small amounts that were easy to ignore.
Until they weren't.
"Dad," Emily whispered.
I looked at her.
"When did she get access?""
I rubbed my forehead.
"After we got married.""
Emily looked confused.
"Why?""
"Because I trusted her.""
The words felt heavy.
Because they were true.
I had trusted her with the house.
The bills.
My daughter.
My life.
And she had treated that trust like permission.
Mia walked closer.
"Could she see everything?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked down.
"Then she knew about Emily's savings.""
"Yes.""
"And she knew how much she had.""
I looked at Emily.
Her face changed.
That was the part that hurt her most.
Not just that Vanessa took the money.
That Vanessa watched her work for it.
She watched every early morning.
Every exhausted night.
Every sacrifice.
And still decided it belonged to her.
"I thought she was proud of me," Emily said quietly.
The room went silent.
I looked at my daughter.
"She should have been.""
Emily shook her head.
"No, Dad.""
Her eyes filled.
"I mean... I thought she was.""
She wiped her face quickly.
"Every time I came home tired, she asked how much I saved.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Emily nodded.
"She would say things like, 'Wow, you're getting close. You're going to have a lot by the end of summer.''"
Mia looked horrified.
"She knew?""
Emily laughed softly.
"Yeah.""
She looked at the floor.
"I thought she was encouraging me.""
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Because that was worse.
A stranger stealing money was one thing.
Someone pretending to support a child's dream while waiting to take it away was something else.
Mia sat down again.
"Mom has been different lately.""
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
She hesitated.
"She started buying things.""
"What things?""
Mia swallowed.
"Clothes. Makeup. Jewelry.""
"When?""
"Over the last few months.""
My jaw tightened.
"Did she say where the money came from?""
Mia shook her head.
"She said she was finally letting herself enjoy life.""
I looked at the transaction history.
Then I understood.
Vanessa wasn't just taking Emily's money.
She was building a story.
A story where she was the victim.
The overworked mother.
The woman who deserved a little happiness.
And everyone else was supposed to accept the cost.
I stood up.
"I'm going to the bank tomorrow.""
Emily looked at me.
"Can you get it back?""
The question was simple.
But the fear behind it wasn't.
I wanted to tell her yes.
I wanted to promise everything would be fixed.
But I had learned something in business.
Promises didn't repair damage.
Actions did.
"I don't know yet.""
Her expression fell slightly.
"But I'm going to find out.""
She nodded.
Then she looked toward the door.
"Is she coming back?""
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know.
And part of me wasn't sure I wanted her to.
That night, nobody slept.
Mia stayed in the guest room.
Emily stayed awake in her room.
And I sat alone at the kitchen table, going through every account statement I could access.
The deeper I looked, the worse it became.
Vanessa had withdrawn money from places I didn't even know she monitored.
A shared credit card.
The household account.
The emergency savings.
And then I found something that made me stop.
A payment from six weeks earlier.
$2,500.
The description wasn't clear.
Just a company name.
*Carter Financial Solutions.*
My eyebrows pulled together.
Carter.
Vanessa's maiden name.
I searched through my records.
Nothing.
No invoices.
No explanation.
No reason.
I grabbed my phone.
I called Vanessa.
She answered after three rings.
"What?""
Her voice sounded irritated.
Not guilty.
Not worried.
Like I had interrupted her evening.
"What's Carter Financial Solutions?""
Silence.
A long one.
"Where did you see that?""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"So it exists.""
"I asked where you saw it.""
"Vanessa.""
Another silence.
Then she sighed.
"You went through everything.""
"I looked at our accounts.""
"Our accounts?""
Her tone became sharp.
"Interesting how they're only 'our accounts' when you want to accuse me.""
I ignored the comment.
"What is Carter Financial Solutions?""
"You wouldn't understand.""
I almost laughed.
"Try me.""
"It's private.""
"With my money?""
"With money I was going to replace.""
"Stop saying that.""
My voice rose.
"Everyone who takes something says they're going to replace it.""
The line went quiet.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
"You need to be careful about what you dig into.""
I stood up.
"Is that a threat?""
"No.""
"Because it sounded like one.""
"It sounded like advice.""
I looked at the dark kitchen window.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere I can think.""
"Come home.""
"No.""
The answer was immediate.
"Vanessa.""
"I need space.""
"You need to explain why you took money from my daughter.""
"Your daughter?""
The bitterness in her voice surprised me.
"You really don't see it, do you?""
"See what?""
"How you always choose her.""
I froze.
There it was.
The thing underneath everything.
Not money.
Not the laptop.
Resentment.
Years of it.
"You were jealous of my daughter?""
"No.""
But she answered too quickly.
"Vanessa.""
She exhaled.
"You don't understand what it's like to always come second.""
I stared at the phone.
"Second to who?""
She didn't respond.
Then the call ended.
I stood there in silence.
A few minutes later, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From the bank.
I opened it.
My stomach dropped.
*New account access detected.*
I clicked the alert.
Someone had logged into Emily's account again.
Not Vanessa.
Not me.
A third device.
A device registered under a name I recognized.
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked toward the hallway.
Because whoever had accessed my daughter's account wasn't outside the house.
May you like
They were someone who had been inside it.
And the name attached to that device belonged to someone I thought I could trust.
