Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed To Protect Them
Daniel stared at the name written on the paper.
For several seconds, his mind refused to accept it.
It couldn’t be true.
It was impossible.
Because the person Claire had warned him about was not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Not someone hiding in the shadows.
It was the man who had held Daniel’s shoulder at Claire’s funeral.
The man who had told him, “You’re not alone.””
The man who had helped him sign paperwork after his world collapsed.
Victor Lang.
His father’s oldest friend.
The man Daniel had trusted for nearly his entire life.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Then again.
“No.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Daniel…”
He shook his head.
“Victor?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence confirmed everything.
Daniel stepped away from the table.
“Victor helped me.””
Sarah looked down.
“I know.””
“He helped me after Claire died.””
“Yes.””
“He helped raise Lily.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked around the room.
“How could someone who loved my family do this?””
Rebecca laughed softly.
And everyone looked at her.
“Loved?””
She shook her head.
“You still don’t understand.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Explain.””
Rebecca looked exhausted now.
Not powerful.
Not threatening.
Just tired.
“Victor never loved your family.””
Thomas frowned.
“Then why did he act like he did?””
“Because that was his job.””
The answer made Daniel’s stomach twist.
His phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
The sound cut through the room.
Daniel looked down.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then Emily whispered:
“Answer it.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Because I think we finally found him.””
Daniel pressed the call button.
“Hello?””
For a few seconds, there was only silence.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
A voice Daniel had heard thousands of times.
“Daniel.””
His blood ran cold.
“Victor.””
Everyone heard the name.
And everyone became still.
Victor’s voice remained calm.
“You’ve had an interesting evening.””
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“You’ve been listening?””
A small laugh.
“Of course.””
Rebecca looked toward the phone.
“You knew?””
Victor ignored her.
“Daniel, I want you to understand something.””
Daniel said nothing.
“This situation has become unnecessarily complicated.””
“Complicated?””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You destroyed my family.””
Victor sighed.
“You’re emotional.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
At Emily.
At the woman who had entered his home pretending to love his daughter.
“I’m finally seeing clearly.””
Victor was quiet.
Then he said:
“Claire always was good at creating chaos.””
Emily immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t talk about my mother.””
Victor paused.
“Emily.””
The way he said her name made everyone uncomfortable.
Like he had known her for years.
Because he had.
Daniel felt anger rise.
“You knew her.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about her.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Lily.””
“Yes.””
Each answer came calmly.
Like there was nothing wrong with any of it.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Why?””
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Because your father made mistakes.””
Daniel froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“What mistakes?””
Victor laughed quietly.
“The kind rich men make when they think money gives them control over everything.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
Thomas looked away.
“What did my father do?””
Victor ignored the question.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””
The calmness in his voice was terrifying.
“Leave this alone.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“You threaten my daughter, hide my wife’s secrets, and now you’re telling me to leave?””
“I’m trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You’re trying to protect yourself.””
A pause.
Then Victor said something unexpected.
“You sound like Claire.””
The words hit Daniel.
Because they sounded almost like admiration.
Almost.
Then Victor continued.
“And that is why she was dangerous.””
Emily stepped closer to the phone.
“You were afraid of her.””
Victor was silent.
Emily’s voice became stronger.
“You were afraid because she figured you out.””
Daniel looked at her.
The girl who had spent seventeen years being treated like a secret.
The girl who had lost her mother.
But somehow still had the courage to stand.
Victor finally answered.
“Claire was stubborn.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at the phone.
“She was brave.””
Another silence.
Then Victor said:
“Daniel.””
“I’m listening.””
“You think this ends with Rebecca.””
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
She looked away.
Victor continued.
“It doesn’t.””
“What else?””
“Your father left something behind.””
Daniel frowned.
“An inheritance?””
“No.””
Victor’s voice lowered.
“Evidence.””
Everyone froze.
“Evidence of what?””
“Everything.””
Daniel’s heart raced.
Victor continued.
“Your father knew Claire was investigating him.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“What?””
Victor ignored him.
“He knew she was close to exposing the truth.””
Daniel whispered:
“What truth?””
Victor didn’t answer.
And that scared him.
Because for the first time, Victor sounded afraid.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your father wasn’t the mastermind.””
The room went silent.
Rebecca looked up.
Thomas frowned.
“Then who was?””
Victor said nothing.
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“Who?””
A long pause.
Then Victor answered:
“Your mother.””
Daniel froze.
The phone nearly slipped from his hand.
“My mother died when I was twelve.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Victor’s voice became quiet.
“Your family has been built on impossible things for a long time.””
Daniel looked around.
Nobody knew what to say.
His mother.
Another dead person.
Another secret.
Another person who was supposed to be gone.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re lying.””
“Maybe.””
Victor sounded almost sad.
“But ask Thomas.””
Everyone looked at Thomas.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What does he know?””
Thomas didn’t speak.
“Thomas.””
The older man looked devastated.
“I…”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Your mother wasn’t who you believed she was.””
The room went silent.
Daniel felt numb.
“How many more?””
Nobody answered.
“How many people in my life were pretending?””
Lily looked frightened.
“Daddy…”
Daniel immediately turned.
His anger disappeared.
He went to her.
“I’m sorry.””
She held onto him.
“I don’t want more secrets.””
Those words broke him.
Because she shouldn’t have had to say them.
Daniel looked at everyone.
“No more.””
His voice was firm.
“No more hidden truths.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
Emily held the letter.
“There’s still one thing.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed to the final line.
The warning Claire wrote.
*Do not let him near my daughters.*
Emily swallowed.
“Claire didn’t write that about Victor.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“She wrote it about someone else.””
Rebecca looked suddenly terrified.
“What?””
Emily turned the page over.
On the back was a small handwritten note.
A name.
Daniel read it.
And this time, there was no confusion.
No disbelief.
Because he knew the person.
The person was alive.
The person was inside his house.
The person had been standing beside them the entire night.
Daniel slowly looked up.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Rebecca’s face changed.
Because she knew too.
The name belonged to someone who had never been questioned.
Someone who had always played the victim.
Someone who had helped Rebecca enter Daniel’s life.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
Rebecca took a step back.
“I didn’t know.””
Thomas stared at her.
“You’re lying.””
The truth was finally coming together.
Rebecca wasn’t the beginning.
Victor wasn’t the beginning.
They were pieces.
Pawns.
And the person controlling them had been hiding in plain sight.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Toward the place where Emily had appeared earlier.
Toward the room where Claire’s old belongings were stored.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
One sentence that made Daniel’s blood turn cold.
*“You should have listened to Claire. I warned you not to dig.””*
Below it was a photo.
A photo taken moments ago.
Inside Daniel’s house.
Showing Lily sleeping upstairs.
May you like
And standing beside her bed…
was the person Claire had feared most.
