Chapter 4: The Person Behind Rebecca
The words sat on the page like a wound that refused to close.
*Rebecca wasn’t working alone.*
Daniel read the sentence again.
Then again.
As if the letters might rearrange themselves into something less painful.
Something easier to understand.
But they didn’t.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“What does this mean?””
Nobody answered immediately.
The silence itself felt like an answer.
Lily sat quietly in her wheelchair, watching the adults around her.
She didn’t understand everything.
She didn’t understand hidden identities or financial schemes or medical records.
But she understood fear.
And right now, everyone was afraid.
Especially Rebecca.
Daniel looked up.
“Thomas.””
The older man took a slow breath.
“There’s more.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
It was barely a whisper.
Everyone turned toward her.
For once, she wasn’t pretending.
She wasn’t acting.
She was begging.
“Please.””
Daniel stared at her.
The woman who had spent months telling him she wanted to be part of his family.
The woman who had kissed Lily’s forehead in front of him and whispered that she would protect her.
The woman who had smiled while hiding something monstrous.
“What are you afraid of?”” Daniel asked.
Rebecca’s eyes filled with anger.
“Nothing.””
Thomas gave a cold laugh.
“You always did that.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“What?””
“Pretend you’re fearless when you’re actually terrified.””
The police officer stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter, can you explain what you mean?””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“I need to start from the beginning.””
Rebecca immediately interrupted.
“You don’t have to listen to him.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“But I do.””
That hurt her more than anger would have.
Because anger meant there was still emotion.
But Daniel sounded like he had already started letting go.
Thomas opened the file.
“Before Rebecca met Daniel, she worked for a private consulting company.””
Daniel frowned.
“What kind of consulting?””
“Financial strategy. Estate planning. Wealth management.””
A cold feeling moved through Daniel’s stomach.
“Meaning?””
Thomas looked at Rebecca.
“Meaning she studied wealthy families and learned how to enter their lives.””
Rebecca crossed her arms.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Thomas ignored her.
“Claire became suspicious because Rebecca knew things she shouldn’t have known.””
Daniel looked down at the paper.
“Like my finances.””
“Yes.””
“And my property.””
“Yes.””
“And Lily.””
Thomas nodded.
“That was the part that scared Claire the most.””
Lily looked up.
“Me?””
Thomas’s expression softened.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Why would someone be interested in me?””
Nobody spoke.
Because the answer was too cruel for a child.
Daniel moved beside her.
“You don’t need to worry about that.””
But Lily looked at him.
“I already did.””
Those three words broke his heart.
Because they meant she had been worrying alone.
For weeks.
Maybe months.
Daniel knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily looked confused.
“For what?””
His eyes filled.
“For not seeing it.””
She reached out and touched his hand.
“You came back.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
A small gesture.
A child forgiving something she shouldn’t have had to forgive.
Across the room, Rebecca watched them.
And something ugly crossed her face.
Jealousy.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Jealousy.
Thomas noticed.
“You really hated that, didn’t you?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“What?””
“That Claire’s place could never be replaced.””
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don’t.””
Rebecca’s voice rose.
“You weren’t there.””
The room became still.
Rebecca realized she had revealed something.
Thomas noticed too.
“There?””
Rebecca looked away.
Daniel stood.
“There where?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel’s voice changed.
“Rebecca.””
She looked at him.
“Where were you?””
The question hung between them.
Rebecca swallowed.
Thomas slowly removed another document.
“This is a police report.””
Officer Harris took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
“What is this?””
Rebecca’s face went pale.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Officer Harris looked up.
“Mr. Bennett, this report is from five years ago.””
Rebecca said nothing.
“It involves an incident at a hospital.””
Daniel froze.
A hospital.
Claire’s hospital.
His mind immediately connected the pieces.
“No.””
Thomas looked at him sadly.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel grabbed the paper.
The words blurred.
But one name stood out.
Rebecca Hale.
Or rather…
The name she used before.
A different name.
A name Daniel had never heard.
“What is this?”” he whispered.
Thomas answered.
“Rebecca worked at the same hospital where Claire received treatment.””
The room went silent.
Lily looked at Daniel.
“Daddy?””
He didn’t respond.
He couldn’t.
Because suddenly every strange detail had a new meaning.
The timing.
The coincidence.
The way Rebecca appeared after Claire became sick.
The way she already knew so much about their lives.
“You knew her before you met me.””
It wasn’t a question.
Rebecca looked down.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“You knew my wife.””
Rebecca finally spoke.
“Yes.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“Claire knew?””
Rebecca looked at her.
“She knew enough.””
Daniel felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she was cornered.
“She always thought she was smarter than everyone.””
Thomas’s expression darkened.
“Careful.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“She investigated me.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
Rebecca’s smile disappeared.
“Because Claire trusted no one.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“Because she saw something.””
Rebecca looked away.
And that was the moment Daniel knew.
She wasn’t denying it.
She was remembering.
“What did she see?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“She saw Rebecca meeting someone.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?””
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation terrified everyone.
“Someone connected to Claire’s treatment.””
Daniel’s face drained.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
The room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Lily grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Daddy, I’m scared.””
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
“I’m here.””
But his own voice shook.
Because he was scared too.
Rebecca looked at Lily.
For a brief moment, something changed.
Almost regret.
Almost.
Then it disappeared.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“I didn’t want things to happen this way.””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“That’s your defense?””
Rebecca ignored him.
“I just wanted a chance.””
Daniel stared.
“A chance at what?””
Her eyes moved around the house.
The expensive furniture.
The photographs.
The life she had tried to steal.
“A family.””
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“You didn’t want a family.””
His voice broke.
“You wanted ours.””
Rebecca looked hurt.
But not because she was sorry.
Because she had been exposed.
Officer Harris stepped forward.
“Rebecca Hale, I need you to come with me while we sort through these allegations.””
Rebecca looked at him.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Lily.
And something changed.
The fear returned.
But this time, it wasn’t fear of being arrested.
It was fear of losing control.
“You really think this is over?””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca smiled faintly.
A cold, familiar smile.
“You still don’t know everything.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Rebecca.””
She ignored him.
“You think Claire was protecting Lily from me?””
She stepped backward.
“You’re wrong.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Rebecca looked directly at Lily.
“She was protecting Lily from the truth.””
Lily’s face went pale.
“My mommy?””
Rebecca smiled.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“Don’t you dare.””
But Rebecca continued.
“Your perfect little family had secrets before I ever arrived.””
Thomas moved toward her.
“Enough.””
Rebecca laughed.
“You want the truth?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Ask Thomas why Claire didn’t tell you everything.””
Daniel turned slowly.
His eyes moved toward Thomas.
The older man went silent.
And that silence was enough.
“Thomas?””
Nobody moved.
Daniel’s heart sank.
Because Rebecca had spent the entire night lying.
But one thing she had always been good at was finding the smallest piece of truth and twisting it into something deadly.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Thomas looked down.
For the first time, he seemed afraid.
Not of Rebecca.
Of the answer.
Finally, he whispered:
“Daniel…”
The front door suddenly opened.
A woman’s voice came from the hallway.
A voice nobody expected.
A voice that made Lily’s eyes widen.
“Because Claire never told you…”
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Older.
Pale.
Holding a small envelope.
And wearing a necklace Daniel recognized instantly.
A necklace that belonged to Claire.
The woman looked at Lily.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””
She took a shaky breath.
“But your mother had another daughter.””
May you like
Daniel froze.
And the world beneath him disappeared.
