Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden In Claire’s Last Letter

The room erupted into chaos.

“Where is the envelope?””

Daniel’s voice cut through the silence.

Everyone looked around.

The letter.

The flash drive.

Everything Sarah had been holding moments ago had disappeared.

Rebecca stood near the center of the room, her face calm again.

Too calm.

Daniel noticed.

And that calm frightened him more than her anger ever had.

“Rebecca.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Where is it?””

She tilted her head.

“I don’t know.””

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

Rebecca gave him a cold smile.

“You always thought you knew everything.””

Thomas scanned the room.

“No one left.””

Officer Harris looked toward the hallway.

“The only people here are us.””

Sarah’s face had gone pale.

“That letter was Claire’s last message.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

Sarah nodded.

“I kept it hidden for years.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because Claire made me promise.””

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“A promise to hide my wife’s final words from me?””

Sarah looked down.

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Sarah looked at Lily.

“Of what would happen if the wrong person found out.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

And slowly, his eyes moved toward Rebecca.

The room became cold.

Because everyone understood.

The wrong person had already found out.

Rebecca walked toward the sofa.

“You’re all making the same mistake.””

Daniel stared.

“What mistake?””

“You think I’m the biggest threat here.””

Thomas laughed.

“You’re not exactly helping your case.””

Rebecca ignored him.

“You don’t know what Claire did.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about my wife like that.””

“Why?””

Rebecca’s eyes sharpened.

“Because you think she was perfect?””

Daniel said nothing.

That silence gave her confidence.

“You loved an idea of Claire.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Rebecca continued.

“She lied to you.””

Daniel felt those words like a knife.

Because part of him feared they were true.

Not because Claire was cruel.

But because Claire had hidden something enormous.

A daughter.

A past.

A secret.

Rebecca saw the doubt.

And she attacked it.

“She let you believe you knew everything about her.””

Daniel looked away.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Rebecca’s voice became louder.

“You deserve to know.””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to pretend you care about the truth.””

Rebecca turned.

“You were the one who abandoned her.””

The accusation shocked everyone.

Sarah went still.

“What?””

Rebecca smiled.

“There it is.””

Thomas looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Ask her.””

Daniel turned toward Sarah.

“Is there something else?””

Sarah looked devastated.

“I…”

Daniel’s heart sank.

“Sarah.””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Yes.””

The word felt heavier than anything before.

Lily looked between them.

“Everyone keeps secrets.””

Her tiny voice silenced the room.

Daniel immediately looked at her.

“Sweetheart…”

She looked down.

“Mommy had secrets. Rebecca had secrets. Everyone does.””

Daniel felt tears burn his eyes.

Because she was right.

The adults had spent so much time protecting children from the truth.

They forgot children could feel lies.

Sarah walked closer.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel looked at her.

“For what?””

“For not telling Claire’s story correctly.””

Thomas frowned.

“Sarah.””

She shook her head.

“No. It’s time.””

She sat down slowly.

“Claire did have another daughter.””

Daniel listened.

“But she wasn’t stolen by a stranger.””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“She was taken because I made a choice.””

Daniel froze.

“What choice?””

Sarah’s voice cracked.

“I gave her away.””

Nobody moved.

Lily looked confused.

“Why?””

Sarah looked at the little girl.

“Because I was scared.””

The pain in her voice sounded real.

“I was twenty-two. Claire was twenty. We were alone. The baby’s father threatened us.””

She swallowed.

“He told us if we didn’t give him what he wanted, he would destroy our lives.””

Daniel whispered:

“So Claire gave up her daughter?””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I did.””

The room went silent.

“I signed papers.””

Daniel stared.

“You gave away Claire’s child without her permission?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Thomas looked stunned.

“You told Claire?””

Sarah shook her head.

“Not immediately.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because I thought I was protecting everyone.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought if the baby disappeared, Michael would stop.””

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

Sarah looked at Rebecca.

“He found another way.””

Rebecca crossed her arms.

“You’re blaming me?””

Sarah looked at her.

“I’m blaming everyone who helped him.””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“Did you know?””

Rebecca said nothing.

“Did you know Claire’s daughter existed?””

Still nothing.

Daniel’s voice became louder.

“Answer me!””

Rebecca finally spoke.

“Yes.””

The answer crushed the room.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Thomas looked furious.

“How long?””

Rebecca looked away.

“Years.””

Daniel stared.

“You knew Claire had another daughter, and you came into my home anyway?””

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“When did you find out?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“When she found Claire’s old records.””

Daniel turned.

“What records?””

Thomas opened another folder.

“I found this in Rebecca’s storage unit.””

Rebecca immediately moved.

“You had no right.””

Officer Harris stepped closer.

“What kind of records?””

Thomas handed them over.

Daniel read.

His face became more and more confused.

“These are adoption documents.””

Sarah looked.

Then she froze.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas pointed.

“Look at the date.””

Sarah took the papers.

Her hands started shaking.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Sarah stared at the document.

“This isn’t possible.””

“What?””

She looked up.

“Because this isn’t the adoption record.””

Thomas frowned.

“Then what is it?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with fear.

“It’s a transfer record.””

Daniel didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah whispered:

“It means the child wasn’t adopted.””

Everyone went silent.

“It means someone moved her.””

Thomas looked at Rebecca.

“And you knew where.””

Rebecca’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked trapped.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Where is Claire’s daughter?””

Rebecca looked at him.

And then she smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A desperate one.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Lily.

“That’s the problem.””

Daniel immediately moved closer to his daughter.

“Don’t look at her.””

Rebecca laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Rebecca’s eyes moved around the room.

“You think Claire was trying to protect Lily from me.””

She shook her head.

“She was protecting Lily from what would happen when the truth came out.””

Daniel’s voice was low.

“What truth?””

Rebecca reached into her coat pocket.

Everyone reacted.

Officer Harris immediately moved.

But Rebecca only pulled out a small photograph.

She threw it onto the table.

Daniel looked down.

And his blood ran cold.

Because the photograph showed two little girls.

One was Lily.

Six years old.

Smiling in her wheelchair.

The other was older.

About seventeen.

Standing beside her.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same small scar near the eyebrow.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Then at Thomas.

Then back at Rebecca.

“Who is she?””

Rebecca whispered:

“That is Claire’s other daughter.””

Daniel picked up the photograph with trembling hands.

“And where is she?””

Rebecca’s smile disappeared.

“She’s been closer than you think.””

The room went silent.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A detail in the photograph.

Something he had missed before.

The background.

The house.

His house.

His heart stopped.

“This picture…”

He looked at Rebecca.

“When was this taken?””

Rebecca said nothing.

Daniel’s voice became a whisper.

“When was my daughter photographed with a girl I’ve never met?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sarah looked at the picture more closely.

Her face turned white.

Because she recognized the girl.

Not from the past.

From the present.

“That’s not possible.””

Thomas looked at her.

“What?””

Sarah pointed at the photograph.

Her hand shaking.

“That girl…”

She swallowed.

“She’s the one who delivered Claire’s final letter.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Sarah looked toward the front door.

“The girl who was here before I arrived.””

Everyone turned.

Because suddenly they remembered.

The strange shadow at the door.

The person who had appeared.

The person who vanished.

Daniel’s voice barely came out.

“Who was she?””

Sarah whispered:

“Her name is Emily.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then Rebecca said the words that changed everything.

“Emily isn’t Claire’s lost daughter.””

She looked at Lily.

“She’s Lily’s half-sister.””

Daniel felt the ground disappear.

Because if that was true…

Then Claire’s secret wasn’t hidden in the past.

It had been living beside them all along.

May you like

And somewhere in the house…

Someone who knew the entire truth was still watching.
