Chapter 5: The Daughter Nobody Knew About

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing in the doorway looked like she had walked through a storm to get there.

Her coat was soaked.

Her hands were trembling.

But her eyes never left Lily.

Not once.

Daniel was the first person to find his voice.

“What did you say?””

The woman swallowed.

“I said Claire had another daughter.””

The sentence landed harder than any accusation Rebecca had made.

Harder than any secret Thomas had revealed.

Because Daniel knew Claire.

He knew her favorite songs.

The way she laughed when she was nervous.

The way she cried during emotional movies even when she pretended she didn’t.

He knew every scar on her hands.

Every dream she had for Lily.

And yet, somehow, he had never known this.

“That’s impossible.””

His voice sounded empty.

The woman looked down.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No, you don’t understand.””

He pointed toward Lily.

“My wife and I had one child.””

The woman’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Daniel…”

“Don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“Don’t say her name like you knew her.””

The woman flinched.

Because she did know her.

And that made everything worse.

Thomas slowly stepped forward.

“Daniel, let her explain.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You knew.””

“I knew part of it.””

“Part?””

Daniel laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

The woman lowered her eyes.

“I never wanted it to happen this way.””

Daniel stared.

“Who are you?””

The woman took a deep breath.

“My name is Sarah Whitmore.””

She looked at Lily.

“And I’m Claire’s sister.””

Evelyn gasped.

“Claire never told us she had a sister.””

Sarah nodded.

“Because she didn’t want anyone to know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

Sarah’s eyes moved to the photograph of Claire on the wall.

“Because Claire was protecting someone.””

Thomas quietly said,

“Her.””

Everyone looked at Sarah.

Daniel’s heart started pounding.

“Your daughter?””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became unbearably quiet.

Lily looked confused.

“Mommy had another baby?””

Sarah’s expression softened.

“She had another little girl.””

Lily looked down.

“Does Daddy know her?””

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“No.””

The answer was gentle.

But it hurt.

Lily looked at her father.

“Why?””

Daniel had no answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Because the woman he loved had carried an entire part of her life away from him.

And he had no idea why.

Rebecca watched everything from across the room.

The fear on her face had changed.

Now there was something else.

Calculation.

Thomas noticed.

“Don’t even think about it.””

Rebecca looked at him innocently.

“Think about what?””

“Using this.””

She smiled faintly.

“I’m not the only person with secrets.””

Daniel ignored them.

He was focused on Sarah.

“When did Claire have another daughter?””

Sarah looked away.

“Before she met you.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“She was young.””

Sarah’s voice became quieter.

“Claire was twenty years old. She made a mistake. She trusted the wrong person. And when she found out she was pregnant, she was terrified.””

Daniel listened.

Every word felt impossible.

“She wanted to keep her baby.””

Sarah’s fingers tightened around the envelope.

“But things happened.””

“What things?””

Sarah hesitated.

Then she looked at Thomas.

He nodded slightly.

“Tell him.””

Sarah took a breath.

“The baby’s father was dangerous.””

Daniel frowned.

“Dangerous how?””

“He wanted control.””

The answer was simple.

But terrifying.

“He didn’t want Claire to leave. He didn’t want the child to exist unless it benefited him.””

Lily hugged herself.

Daniel looked at her.

Then back at Sarah.

“What happened to the baby?””

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“She was taken away.””

The words made everyone go still.

“Taken?””

Sarah nodded.

“Claire fought.””

Her voice broke.

“She fought harder than anyone I’ve ever known.””

Daniel whispered,

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Of losing Lily.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does Lily have to do with this?””

Sarah walked closer.

“She believed anyone connected to her past could put Lily in danger.””

Thomas added quietly,

“That’s why Claire hired me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew all this?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Not everything.””

He looked ashamed.

“Claire only told me she had a secret she needed protected.””

Sarah held up the envelope.

“She left instructions.””

Daniel stared.

“For what?””

Sarah looked at Lily.

“For when Lily was old enough.””

The little girl’s eyes widened.

“Me?””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Lily looked afraid.

“Did my mommy know she was going to leave?””

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew the truth.

Claire had known.

Maybe not exactly when.

Maybe not how.

But she knew.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

He remembered Claire’s last night.

Her weak voice.

Her hand squeezing his.

Her whisper:

“Promise me you’ll protect her.””

He thought she meant Lily.

Maybe she meant more.

“Why now?”” Daniel asked.

Sarah looked toward Rebecca.

“Because Claire was right.””

Everyone followed her gaze.

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Sarah’s voice became colder.

“Everything.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Explain.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“The man who took my daughter was connected to Rebecca.””

Rebecca immediately laughed.

“That’s absurd.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You recognize the story.””

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“I recognize a desperate woman making accusations.””

Sarah ignored her.

“His name was Michael Voss.””

The second she said the name, Rebecca went completely still.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.””

Rebecca looked away.

“No.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Yes, she does.””

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“Who is Michael Voss?””

Thomas answered.

“The person who funded Rebecca’s lifestyle before she came into your life.””

The room exploded into silence.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Rebecca’s expression finally broke.

“Thomas, stop.””

“No.””

He looked at Daniel.

“You deserve the truth.””

Daniel’s hands shook.

“Rebecca was working with him?””

Sarah nodded.

“They were looking for Claire.””

“Why?””

Sarah looked at Lily.

“Because Claire had something they wanted.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Sarah opened the envelope.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a letter.

She handed the letter to Daniel.

The handwriting immediately made him weak.

Claire.

His Claire.

Daniel read silently.

His face changed with every line.

Then he whispered:

“No…”

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?””

He couldn’t answer.

Because Claire’s message wasn’t about Rebecca.

It wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t even about her hidden daughter.

It was about something far worse.

A secret she had protected until her final breath.

Daniel finally looked at Sarah.

“Where is she?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

Rebecca smiled slightly.

And Daniel noticed.

That was the worst part.

Because Rebecca wasn’t surprised.

She wasn’t confused.

She knew exactly who they were talking about.

Daniel turned toward her.

“You know where Claire’s daughter is.””

Rebecca said nothing.

“Rebecca.””

Her silence stretched.

Then she whispered:

“She was never missing.””

Everyone froze.

Sarah stepped forward.

“What did you say?””

Rebecca’s eyes moved toward Lily.

And a slow, terrifying smile appeared.

“She was never taken.””

Daniel felt cold.

“What are you talking about?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You think Claire’s secret was that she had another daughter?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the envelope in Sarah’s hand.

“Claire’s secret was that her other daughter was already inside your life.””

Nobody breathed.

Lily gripped Daniel’s hand.

“Daddy…”

Daniel stared at Rebecca.

His voice barely worked.

“Who is she?””

Rebecca smiled.

And for the first time that night, she looked completely certain.

“She’s the reason Claire died.””

The lights flickered.

May you like

The room went dark for a second.

And when they came back on, the envelope Sarah had been holding was gone.
