Chapter 8: The Ghost From Daniel’s Past

For a moment, Daniel couldn’t understand what he had just heard.

His father.

The man who had buried him seven years ago.

The man whose name was engraved on a stone in the family cemetery.

The man who was supposed to be gone.

Emily’s words repeated in his mind.

*“By Daniel’s own father.””*

“No.””

The word escaped his mouth before he could stop it.

Emily looked at him sadly.

“I know.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No, you don’t understand.””

His voice became louder.

“My father died.””

Thomas watched him carefully.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“You knew about this too?””

Thomas hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Daniel stepped back.

“Everyone knew.””

Sarah looked heartbroken.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

He looked around the room.

“My wife. My father. Rebecca. You.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“You all had pieces of my life, and I was the only person who didn’t know the truth.””

Lily watched him quietly.

She had never seen her father like this.

Not when Claire died.

Not when doctors explained her condition.

Not even tonight.

Because this wasn’t grief.

This was the feeling of discovering your entire life had been built on missing pages.

Emily lowered the letter.

“Your father wasn’t the person you thought he was.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence tonight.””

Emily looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“This isn’t your fault.””

For the first time, Emily looked surprised.

Because she had spent years expecting anger.

Not compassion.

Daniel noticed.

“You thought I would hate you.””

Emily didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because everyone else did.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked at her.

“Why would they hate you?””

Emily looked at the little girl.

“Because they thought I ruined your family.””

Lily frowned.

“But you’re Mommy’s daughter.””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then you’re family too.””

A tear slipped down Emily’s cheek.

A simple sentence.

From a six-year-old child.

But it was something Emily had waited seventeen years to hear.

Rebecca looked away.

Almost uncomfortable.

Because Lily’s kindness made everything Rebecca had done look even uglier.

Thomas walked toward Daniel.

“Your father was involved before Claire met you.””

Daniel stared.

“What do you mean?””

Thomas took a slow breath.

“Your father had business connections with Michael Voss.””

Daniel froze.

Michael Voss.

The name had followed them through every secret.

Every missing piece.

“Who was Michael?””

Emily answered.

“He was my biological father.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at her.

“You never told me.””

Sarah whispered:

“I was ashamed.””

Thomas added:

“And scared.””

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

“And she?””

Rebecca remained silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew Michael.””

Rebecca finally looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Her face was unreadable.

“Because I worked for him.””

The confession landed quietly.

But it changed everything.

Daniel stared.

“You worked for the man who threatened Claire?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

Officer Harris immediately stepped forward.

“Miss Hale, I need you to understand that every statement you make from this point forward may be used as evidence.””

Rebecca laughed softly.

“Evidence?””

She looked around.

“You all think this is a simple story.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

“It means Claire wasn’t just running from Michael.””

Emily’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

Rebecca smiled.

“You know I’m right.””

Emily’s voice shook.

“Don’t talk about my mother.””

“Why?””

Rebecca tilted her head.

“Because she wasn’t perfect?””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You want the truth, don’t you?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Then hear all of it.””

Thomas warned:

“Rebecca.””

But she continued.

“Claire didn’t tell you because she was afraid.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Afraid of what?””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

“Afraid you would find out what happened the night Emily disappeared.””

Emily’s face went pale.

Sarah whispered:

“Stop.””

Daniel turned.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

That scared him.

“Someone tell me.””

Emily looked down.

“I was eleven.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I remember that night.””

Everyone listened.

“My mother came to pick me up.””

Daniel stared.

“Claire?””

Emily nodded.

“She told me we were leaving.””

Rebecca looked away.

Emily continued.

“She said someone dangerous had found us.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“What happened?””

Emily swallowed.

“She never came back.””

Sarah started crying silently.

Daniel looked at Claire’s sister.

“You said she gave you away.””

Sarah nodded.

“But I was wrong.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Sarah wiped her tears.

“I thought Claire abandoned Emily.””

She looked at the girl.

“But Claire was trying to save her.””

Emily’s voice broke.

“She left me with someone she trusted.””

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Emily looked at Rebecca.

The answer was immediate.

Everyone understood.

Rebecca.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Rebecca’s face hardened.

“She had nowhere else to go.””

Emily stared at her.

“You locked me in that house.””

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

“What?””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

“You were a child.””

“I was your prisoner.””

The words echoed.

Officer Harris moved closer.

Emily continued.

“You told me my mother didn’t want me.””

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“You believed that?””

“I was eleven.””

Emily’s voice cracked.

“I believed everything you told me.””

Lily looked horrified.

“She hurt you too?””

Emily looked at her.

“Yes.””

The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at Lily.

And for a moment, there was no answer.

No excuse.

Only the truth.

Because some people hurt others because they can.

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“You did this.””

Rebecca’s eyes flashed.

“You have no idea what I did.””

Thomas immediately said:

“That’s the problem.””

Rebecca laughed.

“You think I’m the villain.””

She pointed at the letter.

“You think Claire was a hero.””

Daniel said nothing.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“But ask yourself something.””

“What?””

“If your father arranged everything…”

She looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel froze.

Because he didn’t know.

And that was the question nobody had answered.

Rebecca continued.

“Your father wasn’t trying to help me.””

Thomas looked concerned.

“What are you saying?””

Rebecca’s smile faded.

“He hired me.””

Silence.

Daniel stared.

“For what?””

Rebecca looked directly at him.

“To watch you.””

The room went still.

“Why?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Because your father knew something about Claire.””

Daniel felt sick.

“What?””

Rebecca looked toward Emily.

“He knew Claire had hidden money.””

Thomas frowned.

“What money?””

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“Not money.””

She looked at Lily.

“An inheritance.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“My father left me everything.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed toward Lily.

“He left everything to Claire’s children.””

Daniel froze.

The room went silent.

“Children?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Both daughters.””

Emily looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Rebecca stared at Daniel.

“Your father knew about Emily before you did.””

Daniel felt the world tilt.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he hid it?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Because he knew Claire would never forgive him.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“What did he do?””

Rebecca looked toward the staircase.

“The same thing he always did.””

A pause.

“He controlled people.””

Daniel’s hands shook.

Because suddenly his father’s death didn’t feel like the end of a story.

It felt like the beginning.

Emily slowly opened the letter again.

“There’s one more page.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel stared.

“You didn’t read it?””

Emily shook her head.

“My mother told me not to open it unless Lily was in danger.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

She was.

She had been.

Emily handed him the page.

His hands trembled as he unfolded it.

Claire’s handwriting appeared again.

This time, the words were shorter.

More urgent.

Daniel read aloud:

“If Rebecca is in your home, it means my fear came true.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

“But Rebecca is not the person you should fear most.””

A chill moved through the room.

The next sentence was underlined.

“If my father-in-law’s plan continued after his death, then the person controlling everything is still alive.””

Daniel stopped.

Nobody breathed.

Because that meant one thing.

Someone had been pulling strings from the beginning.

Someone who was supposed to be gone.

Emily looked at the bottom of the page.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She slowly turned the letter around.

And everyone saw the final handwritten line.

A name.

A name that made Rebecca whisper:

“No…”

Daniel stared.

Because it was impossible.

The person Claire had named as the mastermind…

Was someone Daniel had buried himself.

His father’s closest friend.

The man who had comforted him after Claire died.

The man who had helped raise Lily.

The man everyone trusted.

May you like

And beneath the name was one final sentence:

*“Do not let him near my daughters.””*
