Chapter 9: The Driver Who Knew Too Much

Adrian stared at the photograph until his eyes burned.

Daniel.

Standing behind Emma.

Standing behind Chloe and Lily.

Six years ago.

The night everything changed.

For a moment, Adrian couldn’t hear anything else.

Not the ticking clock.

Not the wind outside.

Not even Emma’s voice asking what was wrong.

“Adrian?””

He didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

Emma looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“No…”

Maria moved closer.

“What is it?””

Adrian looked at the old photograph.

“Daniel.””

Maria frowned.

“The driver?””

“Yes.””

Emma stared.

“I know him.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew Daniel?””

Emma nodded slowly.

“He was there that night.””

The room became still.

“What night?””

Emma looked down.

“The night I disappeared.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought he was on your side.””

Adrian looked away.

The words hurt because they were true.

Daniel had been with him through everything.

His father’s death.

The expansion of his company.

The birth of Lily.

The darkest years after Emma vanished.

He had trusted him.

“Where is he?””

Maria checked her phone.

“He left.””

Adrian looked up.

“When?””

His expression hardened.

“He knew.””

Emma stood.

“He knew Victoria was exposed.””

Adrian grabbed his coat.

Emma immediately followed.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“I need answers too.””

Adrian looked at her.

“This could be dangerous.””

She gave a sad smile.

“Adrian.””

A pause.

“I lost six years because I was afraid.””

Her eyes moved upstairs.

“To my daughters.””

Then back to him.

“I’m not hiding anymore.””

He understood.

And this time, he didn’t argue.

Daniel lived in a small house outside the city.

A place Adrian had never visited.

That alone bothered him.

For eight years, Daniel drove him everywhere.

But Adrian knew almost nothing about his personal life.

Another warning sign he had ignored.

The car stopped outside the house.

The lights were on.

The front door was slightly open.

Adrian immediately noticed.

“That’s wrong.””

Emma looked at him.

“What?””

“He would never leave his door open.””

They stepped out carefully.

Maria stayed in the car and called security.

Adrian pushed the door open.

“Daniel?””

No answer.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Inside, everything looked normal.

A table.

A couch.

A jacket hanging near the entrance.

Then Adrian saw the photograph.

On the table.

The same photograph from the message.

Only this one was older.

Printed.

Real.

Emma picked it up.

Her hands shook.

“Where did he get this?””

Adrian looked around.

“Find him.””

They searched the rooms.

Nobody.

Then Emma noticed something.

“Adrian.””

He turned.

She was standing beside a bookshelf.

“There’s something here.””

Behind a row of old books was a hidden folder.

Adrian pulled it out.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Records.

His stomach dropped.

Because they were all connected to his family.

Emma’s disappearance.

Lily’s childhood.

Chloe’s birth.

Everything.

Maria arrived with security.

“What did you find?””

Adrian opened the folder.

“He was investigating us.””

Emma looked through the papers.

Then she froze.

“What?””

Adrian looked at her.

“What is it?””

She handed him a document.

A hospital record.

A birth certificate.

Chloe’s.

But the name listed under the father section…

was blank.

Adrian looked confused.

“What does this mean?””

Emma’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Then another paper slipped out.

A handwritten note.

Adrian picked it up.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

I tried to fix what I broke.

I thought protecting Adrian meant protecting him from the truth.

I was wrong.

Adrian read the next line.

And froze.

Victoria didn’t plan this alone.

Emma saw his expression.

“What?””

He handed her the note.

Her eyes moved quickly.

Then she whispered:

“There was someone else.””

A sound came from outside.

A car engine.

Adrian turned.

Through the window, headlights flashed.

“Someone’s here.””

Everyone moved.

The front door opened.

Daniel walked in.

Older than Adrian remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

He stopped when he saw them.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian said:

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“I knew this day would come.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew Emma was alive.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Emma’s eyes filled with anger.

“You knew I was suffering.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I tried to help.””

“You disappeared.””

“I protected you.””

“By letting me lose my family?””

Daniel looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?””

He held up the folder.

“You spent years hiding the truth.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked at Lily’s picture on the table.

Then at Emma.

Then Adrian.

“Your father knew.””

The words stopped everyone.

Adrian went still.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“He knew about Chloe.””

Emma whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“He knew your daughter survived.””

Adrian stared.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because the people who took Chloe were connected to your father’s business.””

Silence.

Adrian felt the past opening beneath his feet.

“My father died before Chloe was born.””

“Yes.””

“So how could he know?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because he wasn’t trying to hide Chloe.””

A pause.

“He was trying to protect her.””

Emma shook her head.

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Daniel looked at her with guilt.

“Because your father-in-law believed the danger would disappear.””

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“And did it?””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

A long silence.

“Who was the danger?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your uncle.””

Adrian froze.

“My uncle died years ago.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Adrian remembered.

His father’s younger brother.

The man who vanished after a business scandal.

The man everyone assumed was dead.

Daniel continued.

“He wanted control of the company.””

“And Chloe?””

Daniel looked down.

“She was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father had discovered your uncle was using illegal methods to move money through the company.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“And Chloe was connected?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Emma.

“She was the reason he was willing to expose him.””

Emma frowned.

“Why?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because Chloe’s birth revealed something.””

Adrian waited.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your uncle wasn’t just stealing money.””

A pause.

“He was creating fake identities.””

The room went cold.

Emma’s face changed.

“Chloe…”

Daniel nodded.

“Was one of them.””

Adrian felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman.

Holding a baby.

Adrian recognized the woman.

Emma.

But the baby…

was not Chloe.

It was another child.

Daniel whispered:

“Your uncle wasn’t hiding Chloe.””

He looked at Adrian.

“He was hiding who Chloe’s biological father really was.””

Emma stepped back.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then his expression changed.

Fear.

“Someone followed me.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked outside.

The lights of another car appeared.

Then Daniel said the words that made Adrian’s blood run cold.

“The person who destroyed your family…”

A pause.

“Is inside this house.””

Everyone froze.

Because behind them…

a floorboard creaked.

Someone was standing in the hallway.

Watching.

Emma grabbed Adrian’s arm.

Maria reached for her phone.

Daniel whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Then the hallway light turned on.

And the person standing there was someone Adrian never expected.

Someone who had been missing for years.

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who had just heard everything.

Adrian stared.

“No…”

The figure smiled.

“Yes.””

May you like

A familiar voice filled the room.

“It’s time you learned the rest, Adrian.””
