Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything
The room went completely silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came before something broke.
The old computer monitor flickered, casting a pale light across everyone’s faces.
Adrian stood frozen behind Maria.
Emma covered her mouth.
Lily clung to her father’s hand.
And Victoria…
Victoria looked like she had seen a ghost.
Because the ghost was not Emma anymore.
It was the truth.
The video continued.
The quality was poor. The image shook slightly, recorded from one of the old security cameras hidden in the hallway outside Adrian’s office.
But the voices were clear.
Victoria’s voice.
Six years younger.
Six years more confident.
“Emma, if you don’t leave tonight, I’ll make sure Adrian never sees Lily again.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
He watched the screen carefully.
The camera showed Victoria standing outside the office door.
Emma stood across from her.
A younger Emma.
A woman who looked exhausted and terrified.
“You can’t do this,” Emma’s voice said in the recording.
Victoria smiled.
“I already am.””
Emma shook her head.
“You’re lying.””
“No,” Victoria replied.
“I’m preparing.””
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
The woman in the video sounded exactly like the woman standing behind him now.
Calm.
Controlled.
Cruel.
“You think Adrian will choose you?”” Victoria continued.
“After everything you’ve done?””
Emma’s recorded voice trembled.
“What have I done?””
“You’re unstable.””
“I’m not.””
“You’ve been struggling.””
“I’m a new mother who lost herself for a while.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“You think Adrian wants a wife who cries every night? A wife who can’t handle pressure?””
Emma looked away.
“I love him.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“That’s the problem.””
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
He remembered that night.
He remembered Emma acting distant.
He remembered her crying.
He remembered waking up the next morning and finding the house empty.
He remembered the note.
I’m sorry. I can’t do this anymore.
For six years, he believed she abandoned him.
But now he saw the missing pieces.
On the screen, Emma wiped her tears.
“Adrian would never believe you.””
Victoria smiled.
“You’re right.””
She leaned closer.
“That’s why I won’t tell him.””
Emma looked confused.
“Then what are you going to do?””
Victoria’s voice became quieter.
“I’ll make him believe you left.””
The room seemed to get colder.
Adrian stared at the screen.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Then Emma’s voice came.
“How?””
Victoria looked directly into the security camera.
As if she knew someone would watch this someday.
“I’ll make sure everyone thinks you chose to leave your daughter.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily whispered:
“Daddy…”
Adrian looked down.
His daughter was staring at him.
Confused.
Scared.
He immediately knelt.
“No matter what happens, you’re safe.””
“But…”
Her eyes moved toward Emma.
“Is she really my mom?””
Adrian looked at Emma.
The woman who had spent six years carrying pain alone.
“Yes,” he finally said.
Lily stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Emma’s face crumpled.
“Because I thought you hated me.””
The little girl looked hurt.
“I don’t hate you.””
Emma froze.
“You don’t?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t even know you.””
That sentence was somehow worse.
Emma nodded slowly.
“I know.””
She lowered herself to Lily’s height.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily didn’t move closer.
But she didn’t move away either.
And for Emma, that was enough.
Behind them, Victoria suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
It wasn’t a nervous laugh.
It was angry.
“You’re all acting like this proves everything.””
Adrian stood.
“It does.””
“No.””
Victoria shook her head.
“You have one edited recording.””
Maria looked shocked.
“Edited?””
Victoria pointed at the computer.
“Anyone can cut a video.””
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
“Maria?””
The maid stepped forward.
“Yes, sir?””
“Can the files be verified?””
Maria nodded.
“I already checked.””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“And?””
Maria looked directly at her.
“They’re original.””
Victoria went silent.
Adrian walked toward her.
“You lied to me.””
Victoria’s eyes softened.
“Adrian, listen—”
“No.””
“I was protecting you.””
“Protecting me?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t understand. Emma was unstable. She was going to take Lily away.””
Emma looked shocked.
“That’s not true.””
Victoria ignored her.
“She was going to disappear with your daughter.””
Adrian stared.
“Then why did she come back?””
Victoria had no answer.
For a second.
Just one second.
The mask slipped.
Adrian saw it.
Fear.
Not concern.
Not regret.
Fear.
“Why were you hiding Emma in this house?”” he asked.
Victoria looked away.
“I wasn’t hiding her.””
“You knew she was here.””
Silence.
“That means you knew she survived.””
Victoria said nothing.
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“Why?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
But Adrian noticed something.
They came too quickly.
Too perfectly.
“I loved you.””
Nobody responded.
Victoria continued.
“I loved you, Adrian.””
She pointed toward Emma.
“She left you.””
Emma flinched.
“You’re wrong.””
Victoria turned.
“You disappeared.””
“Because you threatened me.””
“You expect him to believe that?””
Emma’s voice shook.
“Yes.””
Victoria laughed.
“After six years?””
Then she looked at Adrian.
“Think carefully.””
Her voice became softer.
“Who was here when you were raising Lily?””
Adrian stared.
“Who helped you when you were broken?””
A pause.
“Who stayed?””
Her words were carefully chosen.
Because they were partly true.
And that was what made them dangerous.
Adrian had been lonely.
He had been grieving.
And Victoria had been there.
But now he understood something.
Someone could stand beside you while secretly destroying you.
“You were never helping me,” he said.
Victoria’s face changed.
“You were replacing her.””
Silence.
The sentence hit harder than a scream.
Victoria stepped back.
“No.””
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then at Emma.
Then back at Victoria.
“You wanted her gone.””
Victoria’s voice became desperate.
“Adrian—”
“You wanted my daughter to forget her mother.””
“No.””
“You wanted me to believe Emma abandoned us.””
“Because she did!””
The entire room froze.
Victoria realized what she had done.
Her own words had betrayed her.
Emma stared.
Maria covered her mouth.
Adrian slowly turned.
“You just admitted it.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
“I…”
She tried to recover.
“I meant she left physically.””
But nobody believed her.
Not anymore.
Adrian walked back to the computer.
“Maria.””
“Yes?””
“Find every file connected to this.””
Victoria looked alarmed.
“What are you doing?””
“Finding out how long this has been happening.””
“I’m your fiancée.””
Adrian looked at her.
“No.””
A pause.
“You were.””
The words destroyed whatever confidence she had left.
Lily watched quietly.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she understood one thing.
The woman who was supposed to become her family had lied.
A few minutes later, Maria opened another folder.
“This one was hidden.””
Adrian looked.
“What is it?””
“Audio recordings.””
Victoria immediately moved forward.
“Don’t.””
Everyone stopped.
Adrian looked at her.
“Don’t what?””
She froze.
The answer was obvious.
Don’t listen.
And that was exactly why he pressed play.
The recording began.
At first, there was only static.
Then a child’s voice.
A little girl’s voice.
Lily’s voice.
From years ago.
“Mommy?””
Emma gasped.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Because he recognized the date.
The day Emma supposedly left.
The recording continued.
Little Lily was crying.
“Mommy, don’t go.””
Emma’s voice came next.
Broken.
Terrified.
“I’m not leaving you, sweetheart.””
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Then another voice appeared.
Victoria.
“You don’t have a choice.””
A cold silence filled the office.
The recording continued.
And then came the sound that made Adrian’s blood run cold.
A scream.
Not from Emma.
Not from Victoria.
From Lily.
The little girl standing beside him.
Six years younger.
Calling for help.
Adrian grabbed the desk.
Because suddenly he understood.
Emma hadn’t just disappeared.
She had been taken away.
And his daughter had witnessed everything.
But before the recording could reveal what happened next, the audio cut off.
Maria looked at the computer.
“The file is damaged.””
Adrian’s face darkened.
“Can you recover it?””
Maria nodded slowly.
“I can try.””
Then the mansion lights suddenly went out.
The room plunged into darkness.
A second later, every phone in the room buzzed at the same time.
One message.
One unknown number.
One sentence.
*Stop searching, Adrian. You don’t know what you’re about to uncover.*
And beneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph taken inside the mansion.
Only minutes earlier.
May you like
The picture showed Lily sleeping upstairs.
Someone had been watching her.
