Chapter 3: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
“Adrian?””
The voice floated down from the staircase.
Soft.
Familiar.
Impossible.
Adrian didn’t move.
For six years, he had forced himself to accept that voice belonged only to memories.
To old recordings.
To the dreams that disappeared the moment he opened his eyes.
But now it was here.
In his house.
Standing above him.
Lily tightened her grip around his hand.
“Daddy?””
Adrian barely heard her.
His eyes were locked on the woman descending the stairs.
Her dark hair was shorter than he remembered.
Her face was thinner.
Older.
But there was no mistaking her.
“Emma…”
The name left his mouth like a confession.
The woman stopped halfway down.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
Victoria stepped back.
For once, she looked completely powerless.
“No,” she whispered.
Everyone turned toward her.
Emma reached the bottom step slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“Hello, Victoria.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than any argument.
Lily looked between the adults.
“Who is she?””
Adrian looked at his daughter.
He didn’t know what to say.
How could he explain a woman who was both a stranger and a ghost?
A woman he had once loved.
A woman he believed had abandoned them.
A woman whose disappearance had destroyed his family.
Emma looked at Lily.
Her expression broke.
“Oh my God…”
She covered her mouth.
“Lily.””
The little girl stepped closer to Adrian.
She didn’t recognize the woman.
She only recognized fear.
Adrian noticed.
And something inside him hardened.
“Emma,” he said quietly.
She looked at him.
“Why are you here?””
Emma swallowed.
“Because I heard you came home.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Her eyes dropped.
“No.””
Adrian took one step forward.
“Six years.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Six years, Emma.””
“I know.””
“You vanished.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you left us.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I didn’t leave.””
Adrian laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“Then where were you?””
Emma opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victoria finally found her voice.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at her.
She forced a smile.
“Adrian, you’re upset. You’re tired. You flew across the world because of a misunderstanding, and now someone from your past appears—”
“Stop.””
Victoria froze.
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m not interested in what you think.””
Her expression changed.
“But—”
“I said stop.””
The room became silent again.
Maria stood near the hallway, watching carefully.
She had spent months waiting for Adrian to see the truth.
Now the truth was standing in front of him.
And somehow, it was even more complicated than she expected.
Adrian turned back to Emma.
“Why were you upstairs?””
Emma looked toward the second floor.
“I’ve been staying here.””
The words hit everyone.
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Victoria immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Emma looked at her.
“It is.””
Adrian’s eyes moved between them.
“Explain.””
Emma took a shaky breath.
“I didn’t come here tonight. I’ve been here for three weeks.””
Three weeks.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
“You knew?””
Victoria said nothing.
That was enough.
His face changed.
“You knew she was here?””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Adrian, please let me explain.””
“No.””
His voice was sharp.
“You will explain.””
Victoria looked uncomfortable for the first time.
“Emma came to me.””
Adrian turned.
“Why?””
Emma answered.
“Because I had nowhere else to go.””
Victoria looked at her with anger.
“You promised.””
Adrian caught the word.
“Promised what?””
Neither woman answered.
Adrian’s patience disappeared.
“Someone better start talking.””
Emma looked down.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at him.
“Of losing everything.””
Adrian stared.
“You already lost everything when you disappeared.””
Emma closed her eyes.
“I know.””
Lily’s voice suddenly interrupted.
“Daddy?””
Adrian looked down.
“Yes?””
“Is she my mom?””
The question crushed the room.
Emma covered her mouth.
Adrian went silent.
Because he had spent years answering questions about Lily’s mother.
But never this one.
He knelt beside his daughter.
“Lily…”
The little girl looked at Emma.
“She knows my name.””
Adrian glanced at Emma.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
No one answered.
Lily’s eyes moved to Victoria.
Then back to Emma.
“Did you know me before?””
Emma’s face broke.
“Yes.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I knew you before you could walk.””
Lily frowned.
“Then why did you leave?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of pain.
Emma looked like she had been struck.
“I didn’t want to.””
“Then why?””
Emma looked at Adrian.
“I thought you hated me.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Hated you?””
Emma nodded.
“After what happened.””
“What happened?””
Emma looked at Victoria.
And Victoria immediately looked away.
Adrian noticed.
“What happened six years ago?””
No one spoke.
Then Emma whispered:
“Victoria told me you knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That I was going to take Lily away.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Emma’s voice shook.
“She told me you believed I was unstable. That you were going to use your money and power to keep Lily from me.””
Adrian looked stunned.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now.””
Emma wiped her tears.
“But back then…”
She looked at Lily.
“I was already scared.””
Adrian’s mind raced.
The memories came back.
The night Emma disappeared.
The note she left.
The empty closet.
The phone calls that went unanswered.
He remembered feeling betrayed.
But now another possibility appeared.
A possibility he had never considered.
“You didn’t leave voluntarily.””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you contact me?””
Her face changed.
“Because I did.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
“I called you.””
“When?””
“The first week.””
“And?””
Emma looked toward Victoria.
Adrian followed her gaze.
Victoria’s face turned pale.
“No.””
Emma continued.
“I called three times.””
Adrian’s breathing slowed.
“Victoria answered.””
The room went still.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
“Is that true?””
Victoria immediately shook her head.
“She’s lying.””
Emma laughed bitterly.
“Still?””
“Adrian, she’s manipulating you.””
Emma reached into her pocket.
Her hands shook as she pulled out an old phone.
“I kept this because I knew one day I would need proof.””
She unlocked it.
“There are messages.””
Adrian stared.
Emma walked closer.
“Messages I sent you.””
She held the phone out.
“I wrote that I was coming back.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
There were dozens of messages.
Unread.
All sent to his old number.
A number he changed after Emma disappeared.
His eyes moved quickly.
I need to talk to you.
Please let me explain.
Victoria is lying.
Please answer.
His face went cold.
“Why didn’t I see these?””
No one answered.
Then Maria whispered:
“Because someone deleted them.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What?””
Maria’s face turned pale.
“I found something strange last year.””
“What?””
“The old office computer.””
She hesitated.
“There were deleted files.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Maria, enough.””
“No.””
Maria’s voice became stronger.
“I should have spoken sooner.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What files?””
Maria swallowed.
“Security recordings.””
The room changed.
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“Impossible.””
Maria looked at her.
“Not impossible.””
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“Show me.””
Victoria moved toward him.
“Adrian, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””
He looked at her.
“I think I’m finally starting to.””
For the first time that night, Victoria looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Afraid.
Maria turned toward the hallway.
“I saved copies.””
Adrian followed her.
“Where?””
Maria stopped.
“Hidden.””
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because I knew one day someone would need to see what really happened in this house.””
She walked toward the office.
Everyone followed.
Except Victoria.
She remained standing in the living room.
Watching.
Waiting.
Adrian noticed.
“Victoria.””
She looked up.
“If you have nothing to hide…”
He paused.
“…you’ll watch them with us.””
Her face went pale.
The office door opened.
Maria entered and turned on the old computer.
The screen flickered.
Folders appeared.
Years of hidden files.
Adrian stood behind her.
Then Maria clicked one folder.
A video appeared.
Date:
Six years earlier.
The night Emma disappeared.
Adrian watched the loading circle spin.
Emma stood beside him.
Lily held his hand.
And Victoria stood behind them.
Then the video began.
At first, there was only darkness.
Then Victoria’s voice came through the speakers.
Clear.
Cold.
And familiar.
“Emma, if you don’t leave tonight…”
The entire room froze.
May you like
Because the next words revealed something no one expected.
“I’ll make sure Adrian never sees Lily again.””
