Chapter 5: The Secret Room Behind the Wall

The photograph stayed on Adrian’s phone.

He stared at it until the screen dimmed.

Then he tapped it again.

Lily sleeping.

Her small body curled beneath the blanket.

Her stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.

The image had been taken from inside her bedroom.

Not from a window.

Not from outside.

Inside.

Someone had been standing there.

Watching his daughter.

Adrian’s entire body went cold.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody answered.

The mansion remained dark.

Only the emergency lights along the hallway glowed faintly, painting everyone’s faces in a strange red color.

Victoria looked at the phone.

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Adrian noticed immediately.

“You know something.””

Victoria looked at him.

“No.””

“You recognized the number.””

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

Adrian handed the phone to Maria.

“Call security.””

Maria nodded quickly.

But before she could move, the mansion’s main alarm suddenly activated.

A sharp sound echoed through the entire house.

Lily screamed from upstairs.

Adrian ran.

He didn’t think.

He didn’t wait.

He moved faster than he had in years.

“Daddy!””

Her voice broke him.

He reached the bedroom in seconds.

The door was open.

The curtains moved slightly from the cold air entering through the window.

Lily stood frozen beside her bed.

Adrian rushed to her.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

He checked her arms.

Her face.

Her hands.

Nothing.

But then he saw what was wrong.

The photograph wasn’t just a picture.

It was a warning.

Someone had moved things in her room.

Her bookshelf.

Her toy box.

And on the wall behind her bed...

A small scratch.

Like someone had tried to open something.

Adrian looked around.

“Lily.””

She held onto his sleeve.

“Yes?””

“Has anyone been in your room before?””

The little girl hesitated.

A hesitation that told him everything.

“Lily.””

She looked down.

“Sometimes.””

His heart sank.

“Sometimes?””

She nodded slowly.

“After you leave.””

Adrian felt anger rise.

“Who?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

“Sweetheart, think.””

She squeezed her stuffed rabbit.

“Someone comes at night.””

The room went silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her voice became tiny.

“Because I thought you knew.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

Lily looked confused.

“Mrs. Vale said you told her to check on me.””

The anger in Adrian’s chest became something else.

A terrible realization.

“She told you that?””

Lily nodded.

“She said I shouldn’t bother you because you were busy.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

For years.

His daughter had believed he was allowing this.

He had been so focused on providing everything.

He never noticed the one thing she needed most.

Him.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Lily looked at him.

“You’re not mad at me?””

The question nearly broke him.

“No.””

He pulled her into his arms.

“Never.””

Behind him, footsteps approached.

Emma stood in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

Her face was full of pain.

“I should have been here.””

Adrian looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Lily looked between them.

“Were you scared too?””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emma swallowed.

“Because I knew someone wanted to keep us apart.””

Lily looked down.

“Did you miss me?””

Emma’s eyes filled instantly.

“Every single day.””

Slowly, Lily stepped forward.

It wasn’t a hug.

Not yet.

But she reached out and touched Emma’s hand.

And Emma cried.

A quiet cry.

The kind that came from years of holding everything inside.

Then Maria appeared at the door.

“Sir.””

Adrian stood.

“What is it?””

“The security system is back online.””

“Did you find anyone?””

Maria shook her head.

“No.””

Adrian looked at the damaged wall.

“Someone was here.””

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

Maria pointed.

“There are footprints.””

Everyone looked.

Near the bookshelf.

Small marks in the dust.

Not from a worker.

Not from an adult.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Small?””

Maria nodded.

“They look like a child’s footprints.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria suddenly appeared behind Maria.

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian turned.

“Why?””

Victoria looked nervous.

“Because no child has been in this house.””

Emma stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Victoria realized her mistake.

“I mean—”

“No.””

Emma stepped closer.

“You said no child has been in this house.””

A pause.

“Why did you say that?””

Victoria said nothing.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Everyone leaves this room except Victoria.””

Lily looked scared.

Adrian immediately softened.

“Maria, take Lily downstairs.””

Lily grabbed his hand.

“I want to stay.””

“No.””

“Daddy—”

“Sweetheart.””

He knelt.

“I need you to be brave.””

She looked at him.

“Like you?””

Adrian forced a small smile.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

Maria gently took her hand.

Emma followed them.

Before leaving, she looked back at Adrian.

A silent question.

Are you okay?

He wasn’t.

But he nodded.

When the door closed, only Adrian and Victoria remained.

The man who trusted her.

And the woman who destroyed that trust.

“Talk.””

Victoria looked toward the wall.

“I don’t know anything.””

“Wrong answer.””

“I’m serious.””

“Then explain the footprints.””

She stayed silent.

“Explain the photograph.””

Silence.

“Explain why Emma’s name was hidden in this house.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me.””

She laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“You still think this is simple.””

Adrian stared.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at him.

“You think I’m the worst thing that happened here.””

A pause.

“But I’m not.””

Adrian said nothing.

Victoria stepped closer.

“There are things about this family you don’t know.””

“You mean lies.””

“I mean secrets.””

“Whose secrets?””

Victoria looked toward the ceiling.

Toward Lily’s room.

“Your father had enemies.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“My father died years ago.””

“Yes.””

Victoria lowered her voice.

“But some enemies don’t disappear when people die.””

“That has nothing to do with Lily.””

“You’re wrong.””

Adrian stared.

“Then why was someone watching my daughter?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because they weren’t watching Lily.””

A pause.

“They were watching you.””

The words landed heavily.

Adrian didn’t react.

But inside, his mind was moving.

“Who?””

Victoria looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I know the person exists.””

“Name.””

Victoria remained silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Name.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Daniel.””

Adrian froze.

“Daniel?””

His driver.

His employee.

The man who had worked beside him for eight years.

Victoria nodded.

“He knows more than he says.””

Adrian stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

She looked at him.

“Who knew you were coming home tonight?””

Adrian thought.

Only a few people.

The flight crew.

Daniel.

Maria.

Victoria.

His face changed.

Victoria saw it.

“You understand now.””

But Adrian wasn’t convinced.

Not yet.

Because something about Victoria’s confession felt wrong.

She was telling the truth.

But only part of it.

“Why tell me this?””

Victoria looked down.

“Because I’m not the only person who can lose everything.””

Before Adrian could respond, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

No voice.

Only breathing.

Then a child’s whisper.

“Mr. Oleso?””

Adrian froze.

Because he recognized the voice.

It was not Lily.

It was another child.

A child from the past.

A child he thought had disappeared.

“Who is this?””

The voice trembled.

“Please…”

A pause.

“Don’t trust anyone in that house.””

Adrian stood still.

“Who are you?””

The child whispered one final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

“I’m Emma’s daughter.””

The call ended.

And for several seconds, Adrian couldn’t move.

Because Emma had only ever told him about one child.

Lily.

But now someone was claiming there was another.

May you like

And somewhere inside the mansion...

A secret room was waiting to reveal the truth.
