Chapter 8: The Lie That Reached the Police

The sound of footsteps filled the mansion.

Not the footsteps of family.

Not the footsteps of people who belonged there.

Heavy boots.

Official voices.

People coming with questions.

Adrian stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring toward the front entrance.

For years, he had controlled every crisis in his life.

Business failures.

Legal battles.

Public scandals.

He knew how to fight.

How to negotiate.

How to win.

But this was different.

Because the person attacking him had chosen the one thing he could not risk losing.

His children.

Behind him, Emma held Chloe close.

Lily stood beside Maria, watching everything with frightened eyes.

Two sisters.

Two children who had already lost too much.

Adrian looked at Victoria.

She was no longer crying.

No longer pretending.

She looked calm.

Almost relieved.

And that scared him more than anger would have.

“You called them.””

Victoria looked innocent.

“Called who?””

“The police.””

She shook her head.

“I would never do that.””

Adrian stared.

“Then why are they here?””

Victoria looked toward the door.

“Maybe because someone finally noticed what’s happening in this house.””

The words were carefully chosen.

A trap.

Adrian understood.

She wanted him angry.

She wanted him to react.

Because angry people made mistakes.

Before he could answer, the front door opened.

Two officers entered with a woman wearing a dark suit behind them.

She carried a folder.

“Mr. Oleso?””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Yes.””

The woman showed her identification.

“I’m Detective Harper.””

“What is this about?””

She glanced around the mansion.

Then at the children.

“We received a report concerning child neglect and unlawful confinement.””

The room went silent.

Emma’s face changed.

“What?””

Detective Harper looked at Chloe.

Then Lily.

“We need to ask some questions.””

Adrian immediately stepped between them.

“Not without me present.””

The detective nodded.

“Of course.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

“But we do need to understand what happened here.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

Adrian turned sharply.

“No.””

Detective Harper looked between them.

“Ms. Vale?””

Victoria nodded.

“I’m his fiancée.””

“Good.””

The detective opened her folder.

“Then perhaps you can tell me why a hidden room exists in this house.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Someone had already told them.

Victoria answered carefully.

“I don’t know.””

Emma laughed softly.

A bitter sound.

“You don’t know?””

Victoria looked at her.

“I found out tonight.””

Detective Harper glanced at Emma.

“And you are?””

Emma hesitated.

Then she said:

“Emma Oleso.””

The detective looked surprised.

She checked her notes.

“Interesting.””

Adrian noticed.

“What?””

Detective Harper looked up.

“The report stated that a woman named Emma Oleso abandoned her family six years ago.””

The room froze.

Emma looked devastated.

Adrian looked at Victoria.

There it was.

The story.

The same lie.

Still alive.

Detective Harper continued.

“The report also stated that Mr. Oleso discovered a hidden child in the house tonight.””

She looked toward Chloe.

“And that he may have been involved in keeping her hidden.””

Adrian felt anger rise.

“You believe that?””

“I believe in evidence.””

Victoria quietly said:

“That’s why I called.””

Everyone looked at her.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You did call.””

Victoria said nothing.

Detective Harper turned.

“You reported concerns about Mr. Oleso?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“I was afraid.””

Emma stared at her.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Victoria ignored her.

“I have been worried for months.””

Adrian almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was absurd.

“You were worried?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You forced my daughter to eat from a dog bowl.””

Her face changed.

“That’s a misunderstanding.””

“You hid a child in my house.””

“I protected her.””

“You manipulated my family.””

“I tried to help.””

Detective Harper raised a hand.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

She looked at Adrian.

“Mr. Oleso, I need to ask you something.””

“Yes?””

“Did you know about Chloe?””

The question hit hard.

Adrian answered honestly.

“No.””

“Did you know the hidden room existed?””

“No.””

“Did you ever provide instructions to keep this child isolated?””

“No.””

Detective Harper looked at Emma.

“And you?””

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

The detective looked at Chloe.

Then softened.

“Chloe, can I talk to you?””

The little girl immediately grabbed Emma’s hand.

“No.””

Emma knelt.

“It’s okay.””

Chloe shook her head.

“No.””

She whispered:

“She told me people would take me away.””

Everyone looked at Victoria.

Victoria’s face changed.

“I never said that.””

Chloe looked at her.

“You did.””

The detective noticed.

“Who told you that?””

Chloe pointed.

“Her.””

Victoria stepped back.

“No.””

Detective Harper looked at Chloe.

“Can you tell me what happened?””

The child looked down.

Her fingers tightened around the notebook.

Then she handed it over.

The detective opened it.

Page after page.

A child documenting fear.

A child documenting loneliness.

The detective’s expression slowly changed.

“This is yours?””

Chloe nodded.

“I wrote things down because Mommy said nobody would believe me.””

Emma covered her mouth.

Detective Harper looked at the pages.

Then at Victoria.

“Ms. Vale.””

Victoria forced a smile.

“She’s a child.””

“Yes.””

“And children misunderstand things.””

The detective closed the notebook.

“They do.””

A pause.

“But they rarely invent years of detailed memories.””

Victoria’s confidence weakened.

Adrian noticed.

So did everyone else.

Then Detective Harper looked at Maria.

“You were the maid who reported the original incident?””

Maria nodded.

“Yes.””

“Do you have proof?””

Maria took out her phone.

“I have photographs.””

She handed it over.

The detective looked.

Her expression hardened.

Adrian saw the moment everything changed.

The moment Victoria lost control.

But Victoria wasn’t finished.

She suddenly said:

“You’re all ignoring one thing.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed at Emma.

“She disappeared.””

Emma froze.

Victoria continued.

“She left her family.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Not this again.””

“No.””

Victoria looked at the detective.

“Ask her where she was for six years.””

The detective turned.

Emma went quiet.

Adrian looked at her.

He knew there were still unanswered questions.

Emma lowered her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?”” the detective asked.

Emma hesitated.

Then she said:

“Of coming back.””

“Why?””

Emma looked at Adrian.

“Because I knew someone would try to destroy me.””

A silence followed.

Then Chloe spoke.

“She’s telling the truth.””

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl held her notebook.

“Mommy didn’t leave.””

Victoria stared.

“How would you know?””

Chloe looked at her.

“Because you told me.””

Victoria froze.

“What?””

Chloe’s voice shook.

“You told me Mommy was alive.””

The room went silent.

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Chloe continued.

“When I asked where she was, Victoria said Mommy was somewhere far away.””

Emma’s face changed.

“She knew I was alive.””

Adrian looked at Victoria.

“You knew.””

Victoria’s expression collapsed.

For the first time, she looked truly trapped.

“I…”

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew she was alive.””

Victoria looked desperate.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You’ve had six years.””

A tear appeared in Victoria’s eye.

“I loved you.””

Adrian stared.

“No.””

“You know I did.””

“No.””

His voice became harder.

“You loved the life you built around me.””

Victoria shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

“You didn’t want a family.””

He looked at Lily.

Then Chloe.

“You wanted control.””

The detective stepped forward.

“Ms. Vale, I need you to come with me while we sort through this.””

Victoria looked shocked.

“You’re arresting me?””

“No.””

The detective remained calm.

“You are being asked to come with us for questioning.””

Victoria looked around.

Searching for someone to save her.

Nobody moved.

Not Adrian.

Not Maria.

Not Emma.

Not even the children.

As she passed Adrian, she stopped.

Her voice became a whisper.

“You think this is over?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Victoria smiled faintly.

“You still don’t know who sent that message.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

She leaned closer.

“The person who wants you destroyed…”

A pause.

“Is not me.””

Then she walked away with the detective.

The mansion finally became quiet.

But Adrian knew better.

Quiet did not mean safe.

Hours later, after statements were taken and the police left, Adrian sat in his office.

Maria stood nearby.

Emma sat beside him.

Chloe and Lily were asleep upstairs.

For the first time, they were in the same house.

Together.

But Adrian couldn’t relax.

Because something bothered him.

The unknown number.

The hidden room.

The missing years.

And Victoria’s final words.

His phone suddenly buzzed.

A new message.

No number.

Just a photo.

Adrian opened it.

His blood turned cold.

It was an old photograph.

Taken six years ago.

Emma.

Chloe.

Lily.

Together.

But behind them stood someone else.

Someone Adrian recognized immediately.

Someone he trusted.
