Chapter 9: The Child They Erased
“Richard, answer the phone!””
Marcus stood in the hospital corridor, calling his brother for the seventh time.
No answer.
He tried again.
The call went straight to voicemail.
Daniel approached carrying a folder.
“Any luck?””
My father shook his head.
“He told me Sophia was carrying my child when she died.””
Daniel stopped walking.
“Are you certain?””
“I heard him say it.””
“Did he explain?””
“He disconnected.””
Daniel opened the folder.
“There's something you need to see.””
He placed a laboratory report on the table.
It had been recovered from Thomas Monroe's house.
The document was dated three weeks before Sophia died.
The patient name was Sophia Carter.
The test results included a pregnancy hormone level.
But there was another section.
A genetic screening report.
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
“Look at the reference number.””
Marcus leaned closer.
It was the same reference number that appeared on the medical report concerning the unidentified newborn.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel answered carefully.
“It suggests the records may belong to the same pregnancy.””
Marcus looked up.
“Then the baby was born?””
“Possibly.””
“When?””
Daniel turned another page.
“According to this document, the expected delivery date was approximately six months after Sophia's death.””
Marcus felt sick.
He looked toward the hospital room.
Lily was sleeping.
Max lay beside her bed.
And somewhere outside Charlotte, another child might be alive.
A child he had never met.
A child whose existence had been hidden by people he had trusted.
“Find Richard,” he said.
Daniel nodded.
“We've already contacted the police.””
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“And we're going to Thomas Monroe's house.””
“Marcus, it's almost midnight.””
“I don't care.””
Daniel held his arm.
“Listen to me. If Vanessa has another child hidden somewhere, she may be using that child to control the entire situation.””
My father looked at him.
“Then we find the child before she does.””
At 12:40 a.m., police located Richard's car outside an abandoned office building.
The driver's door was open.
His phone was on the passenger seat.
And a small amount of blood was visible on the steering wheel.
Marcus arrived minutes later.
He ran toward the vehicle.
“Richard!””
No answer.
An officer approached.
“Mr. Carter, please stay behind the tape.””
“That's my brother!””
“We understand.””
Marcus looked inside the vehicle.
There was a folded piece of paper on the seat.
He reached for it.
The officer allowed him to take it.
It was a handwritten note.
Marcus,
I found the original file.
The baby survived.
Vanessa knows where the child is.
Do not trust Andrew.
And please, for Sophia's sake, don't make the same mistake I did.
Richard.
My father read it.
Then he looked toward the building.
“Search everywhere.””
The officers entered.
They found an empty office.
A broken desk.
Two overturned chairs.
And a security camera that had been deliberately removed.
But they found something else.
A small silver pendant.
Marcus recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to Sophia.
He had given it to her on their anniversary.
He picked it up.
There was a tiny engraving on the back.
Two initials.
S.C.
And beneath them, a third letter.
A.
Andrew.
Marcus closed his fist around the pendant.
At 8:15 the next morning, Emily arrived at the hospital.
She was accompanied by a social worker.
My father had arranged the meeting with the hospital psychologist.
He wanted the girls to meet somewhere familiar.
And he wanted Emily to know she wasn't being abandoned again.
I was sitting on the carpet beside my bed.
Max was lying beside me.
When Emily entered, she stopped.
She looked at me.
Then at Max.
“Is that your dog?””
I nodded.
“Max.””
Emily smiled.
“Can I pet him?””
I looked at Daddy.
He nodded.
Emily approached carefully.
Max sniffed her hand.
Then he wagged his tail.
She laughed.
“He's soft.””
I nodded.
“Max good.””
Emily sat beside me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she pointed at the stuffed rabbit.
“What's his name?””
“Bunny.””
Emily giggled.
I looked at her.
“Name?””
“Emily.””
I repeated it slowly.
“Em-lee.””
She smiled.
“That's right.””
I reached for the photograph on the bed.
It showed Sophia holding both babies.
I pointed.
“Mommy.””
Emily stared at it.
Then she touched Sophia's face.
“That's my mommy.””
I nodded.
“Mine too.””
Emily looked at me.
Then she whispered:
“Are we sisters?””
I smiled.
“Yeah.””
She leaned closer.
And I wrapped my little arms around her.
My father stood in the doorway.
He had spent the previous night searching for a missing brother, a missing child, and the truth about his dead wife.
But watching his two daughters hold each other made something inside him settle.
Whatever had happened before, these children had done nothing wrong.
He walked over.
“Hello, girls.””
Emily looked up.
“Are you my daddy?””
Marcus knelt.
He looked at her.
Then he looked at me.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Emily's eyes filled.
“Both of us?””
My father nodded.
“Both of you.””
She began crying.
He opened his arms.
And both girls moved toward him.
For one beautiful moment, the Carter family was together.
Then the hospital telephone rang.
The police had found Richard.
He was alive.
He had been discovered inside a storage building several miles from the office.
He had a broken rib and a head injury.
But he was conscious.
Marcus immediately drove to the hospital where Richard was being treated.
Daniel accompanied him.
Richard was lying in bed with a bandage around his forehead.
When Marcus entered, his brother began crying.
“I'm sorry.””
Marcus stood beside him.
“Tell me what happened.””
Richard looked toward Daniel.
Then he reached beneath his pillow.
He removed a small envelope.
“I found this in the old family records.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Sophia.
She was standing outside a maternity clinic.
She looked tired.
Her hand rested against her stomach.
On the back was a date.
Six weeks before she died.
Marcus stared.
“Why did you keep this?””
“Because I thought it might save you.””
“Save me from what?””
Richard looked at him.
“From the truth about Andrew.””
He paused.
“Andrew was never just Vanessa's partner.””
Marcus frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Richard swallowed.
“He was Sophia's biological brother.””
Marcus froze.
Daniel looked up sharply.
“What?””
Richard nodded.
“They had the same father.””
Marcus stared at him.
“That's impossible.””
“No.””
Richard looked away.
“Your father knew.””
Marcus stepped backward.
His father had been involved with Sophia before Marcus married her.
Andrew was Sophia's half-brother.
And somehow, all three men were connected through a secret that had been buried for years.
Richard continued.
“Sophia discovered the truth after Emily was born.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why did she never tell me?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of Andrew?””
Richard nodded.
“And of what your father had done.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What did my father do?””
Richard's voice broke.
“He arranged Emily's adoption without Sophia's consent.””
Daniel slowly sat down.
“Why?””
Richard looked at Marcus.
“Because he wanted to protect the Carter family name.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“Protect it from what?””
Richard answered:
“From the fact that Robert Carter had fathered a child with Sophia before she married you.””
Marcus felt the room spin.
“And Vanessa?””
“She was Andrew's partner. She helped arrange the paperwork.””
Richard paused.
“But there was another reason Andrew wanted control of the trust.””
“What?””
“He wanted to punish your father.””
Marcus stared.
“Robert was already dead.””
Richard nodded.
“But Andrew believed the Carter family had stolen his inheritance.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Then the fraud wasn't only about money.””
Richard shook his head.
“No. It was revenge.””
At 10:30 a.m., Marcus received an unexpected call from a woman named Claire Donovan.
She introduced herself as an attorney representing a private children's charity.
“I believe you are looking for a child named Emily Carter.””
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
“Yes.””
“I may be able to help.””
“How?””
“I have a file concerning a newborn who was placed in temporary care several years ago.””
Marcus stood.
“What was the child's name?””
“Initially, the child was registered as Baby A.””
“Baby A?””
“Yes. The records were later amended.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Where is the child now?””
Claire hesitated.
“That's complicated.””
“Why?””
“Because the child was adopted under a different identity.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Who adopted her?””
A pause.
Then Claire answered:
“A family in Virginia.””
“Do you know their names?””
“Yes.””
She gave him two names.
James and Laura Whitmore.
Marcus wrote them down.
Then he asked:
“Is the child alive?””
Claire's voice softened.
“Yes.””
My father sat down.
For the first time in days, he felt a flicker of hope.
“Can I meet her?””
“Not until we verify the biological records.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Do whatever is necessary.””
Claire continued.
“There's another complication.””
“What?””
“The adoption file contains a letter from the biological mother.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Who?””
Claire answered:
“Sophia Carter.””
That afternoon, Daniel received the letter.
It was written on hospital stationery.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Marcus opened it.
My dearest child,
I don't know whether you will ever read this.
I don't know whether I will have the chance to hold you again.
But I need you to know that you were loved from the very first moment I saw you.
Your name is Olivia.
I chose it because it means peace.
I wanted to raise you beside your sisters.
I wanted you to grow up knowing your family.
But people have made decisions about your life without asking me.
I am trying to bring you home.
If I fail, please remember that I never abandoned you.
I loved you.
Always.
Mom.
Marcus lowered the letter.
His hands were shaking.
“Olivia.””
Daniel nodded.
“The third child.””
My father looked toward the hospital window.
He had two daughters in the same building.
And now he had discovered a third.
A little girl named Olivia.
A child Sophia had apparently tried desperately to protect.
But there was something else in the file.
A legal statement signed by the adoptive parents.
They had agreed to keep the child's identity confidential.
And the date of the agreement was two days after Sophia's death.
Marcus looked up.
“Who arranged the adoption?””
Daniel turned the final page.
Andrew Wexler.
And the witness signature belonged to Vanessa Monroe.
At 5:20 p.m., Marcus received a message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a little girl standing beside a woman.
The child had blonde hair.
Brown eyes.
And a small birthmark above her left eyebrow.
Beneath the picture was a message.
*Olivia is safe. Stop looking.*
Marcus stared.
Then another message arrived.
*If you want to see her again, come alone.*
Daniel immediately took the phone.
“Don't answer.””
Marcus looked at him.
“She's my daughter.””
“And this is a trap.””
“I don't care.””
“You should.””
Marcus stood.
“Daniel, I've already lost Sophia. I nearly lost Lily. I've just found Emily. I'm not going to let another child disappear.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Then he noticed something.
The woman standing beside Olivia wore a familiar bracelet.
A gold bracelet with a small blue stone.
He had seen it before.
On Vanessa's wrist.
Daniel enlarged the photograph.
Then he noticed the background.
A white stone building.
A row of tall windows.
And a sign near the entrance.
*CARTER CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION.*
Marcus frowned.
“That's our old charity building.””
Daniel nodded.
“Which was closed three years ago.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then why is Olivia there?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he called the police.
Within minutes, they were preparing to search the property.
But before they could leave, Marcus received one final message.
This time, it wasn't a photograph.
It was a voice recording.
A little girl's voice.
“Daddy?””
Marcus froze.
“Please come get me.””
Then Vanessa's voice followed.
“Tell him what happens if he doesn't.””
The child began crying.
“Daddy, I'm scared.””
The recording ended.
Marcus stared at the phone.
Daniel reached for his arm.
“Marcus, wait for the police.””
But my father was already moving.
Because somewhere in Charlotte, a little girl named Olivia was calling him Daddy.
And he had no intention of letting her call into the darkness alone.
At 6:03 p.m., the police entered the old foundation building.
The doors were unlocked.
The reception area was empty.
A small pink shoe lay beside the staircase.
Marcus recognized it from the photograph.
He ran upstairs.
“OLIVIA!””
No answer.
They searched the offices.
The storage rooms.
The basement.
Nothing.
Then an officer discovered a locked door at the back of the building.
He forced it open.
Inside was a small bedroom.
A child's bed.
A table.
Three stuffed animals.
And a photograph of Sophia.
On the wall, someone had written a sentence in black marker.
*SHE BELONGS TO THE CARTERS.*
Marcus looked around.
“Where is she?””
The officer examined the room.
“Someone left recently.””
On the table was a glass of water.
Still half full.
Beside it was a folded piece of paper.
Marcus opened it.
The message was short.
*You found the first two girls. You will never find the third unless you learn what Sophia did the night before she died.*
He turned the paper over.
There was another sentence.
*Ask Daniel about the missing hospital file.*
Marcus slowly looked at his attorney.
Daniel's face had gone pale.
“What's the missing hospital file?”” Marcus demanded.
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
“Marcus, there's something I never told you.””
My father stared.
“What?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“The night Sophia died, I received a telephone call from her.””
Marcus grabbed his arm.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Because she asked me not to.””
“What did she say?””
Daniel took a shaky breath.
“She told me that one of the three children was not biologically yours.””
Marcus went completely still.
“Which child?””
Daniel looked at him.
Then he answered:
“Lily.””
The world seemed to stop.
My father stepped backward.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“I didn't believe her at first. But she sent me a DNA report.””
Marcus stared.
“Where is it?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Andrew took it.””
My father looked toward the empty bedroom.
Then at the photograph of Sophia.
Then at the three stuffed animals on the bed.
He had believed that the greatest secret was the existence of his daughters.
But now he was being told that the little girl he had raised, the child he had nearly lost to Vanessa's cruelty, might not be biologically his.
And somewhere, the missing DNA report could prove it.
Marcus whispered:
“Who is Lily's father?””
Daniel's answer came slowly.
“I don't know.””
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
Daniel answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“Mr. Brooks, you should tell Marcus the truth.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Who is this?””
The man laughed.
“Someone who knew Sophia better than either of you.””
Marcus grabbed the phone.
“Where is my daughter?””
The man answered with a sentence that made Marcus's blood run cold.
“Which one?””
Then the call ended.
And for the first time, Marcus understood that the three little girls might be connected by something far more complicated than a family inheritance.
