Chapter 6: The Brother Who Signed My Mother's Death
Richard Carter had always been the quiet one.
Unlike Marcus, he rarely attended business meetings.
He disliked public attention and preferred working behind the scenes.
He had inherited a smaller portion of their father's business and managed several commercial properties outside Charlotte.
But there was one thing Marcus had never questioned.
His loyalty.
Richard had stood beside him at his wedding to Sophia.
He had carried my tiny body during the funeral.
He had promised to protect me if anything ever happened to my father.
And now his signature appeared on a document that could have transferred my inheritance to Vanessa.
Marcus stared at his phone.
“Call him back.””
Daniel tried.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“We should go to the family office.””
“I'm coming.””
“You should stay with Lily.””
Marcus glanced toward the hospital bed.
I was asleep, with Max curled beside me.
Margaret sat in the chair near the window.
She looked up.
“What's happening?””
“My brother has information about Sophia.””
Margaret stood.
“Richard?””
Marcus nodded.
“Apparently, he knew something about Vanessa.””
Margaret frowned.
“Then why didn't he tell us?””
“That is exactly what I'm going to find out.””
He approached her.
“Please stay with Lily. Don't let anyone take her anywhere unless you know who they are.””
Margaret nodded.
“Of course.””
Marcus turned toward the door.
Then he stopped.
“Margaret?””
“Yes?””
“If Richard calls, don't tell him where we are.””
She looked confused.
“Why?””
My father looked down at the phone.
“Because I'm no longer sure which side he's on.””
The old Carter family office stood in downtown Charlotte.
It was a brick building that had belonged to my grandfather.
The company had moved most of its operations elsewhere, but Richard still used the top floor.
Marcus arrived at 5:32 p.m.
Daniel was beside him.
The receptionist looked startled.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Where's Richard?””
“He left about twenty minutes ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“Did he say where he was going?””
“No.””
“Was anyone with him?””
The receptionist hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“A man named Andrew Wexler.””
Marcus and Daniel exchanged a look.
“Did they leave together?””
“Yes, sir.””
Marcus immediately pulled out his phone.
He called Richard.
This time, someone answered.
But it wasn't his brother.
It was Andrew.
“Hello, Marcus.””
My father's face hardened.
“Put Richard on the phone.””
“I'm afraid he's unavailable.””
“Where is he?””
“Safe.””
Marcus laughed without humor.
“You have ten seconds to tell me where my brother is.””
Andrew sighed.
“Always so dramatic.””
“Where is he?””
“Marcus, we need to discuss the trust.””
“There is nothing to discuss.””
“Actually, there is.””
Andrew's voice became softer.
“Your wife made a mistake when she created that trust.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Don't mention Sophia.””
“Why? She isn't here to object.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Put this call on speaker.””
Marcus did.
Andrew continued.
“She was emotional. She made decisions without understanding the financial consequences.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“What financial consequences?””
“The estate was designed to protect Lily, but it also created an opportunity for people to exploit your company.””
“Who?””
Andrew laughed.
“You really don't know, do you?””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Tell me where Richard is.””
Andrew ignored him.
“Your brother signed the amendment because he understood what needed to be done.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Mr. Wexler, that amendment is fraudulent.””
Andrew chuckled.
“Prove it.””
“We will.””
“Then I suppose we'll see each other in court.””
The call ended.
Marcus stared at his phone.
Daniel looked toward the receptionist.
“Do you have security cameras?””
“Yes.””
“Can we see the footage from the last hour?””
She nodded.
A few minutes later, they were watching Richard leave the building.
He was carrying a brown leather folder.
Andrew followed him.
Then a black SUV pulled up.
Richard got inside.
Andrew entered the passenger seat.
The vehicle drove away.
Marcus leaned closer.
“Can you read the plate?””
The receptionist zoomed in.
Daniel wrote it down.
Then he called the police.
At 6:10 p.m., the hospital room phone rang.
Margaret answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice responded.
“Is Lily there?””
“Who is this?””
“This is Richard Carter.””
Margaret's expression changed.
“Richard.””
“Is Marcus there?””
“No.””
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
Richard sighed.
“Please don't lie to me.””
Margaret glanced toward me.
I was awake now, holding Max's paw.
“What do you want, Richard?””
“I need to speak to Lily.””
Margaret frowned.
“She is three years old.””
“I know.””
“Then why do you need to speak to her?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Because I need to tell her something about her mother.””
Margaret looked toward the door.
“Tell Marcus.””
“I can't.””
“Why not?””
A pause.
Then Richard whispered:
“Because I helped them.””
Margaret's face went pale.
“What did you do?””
“I didn't know what they were planning at first.””
“Richard…”
“I swear to you, I didn't know.””
Margaret stepped into the hallway.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Richard took a shaky breath.
“Vanessa came to me after Sophia died. She said Marcus was struggling and that she wanted to make sure the company remained stable.””
Margaret said nothing.
“She asked me to sign a document confirming that Sophia had intended Vanessa to become a secondary beneficiary.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Richard, how could you?””
“I thought it was a formality.””
“You witnessed a document you hadn't verified?””
“I know.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Did you know it was fraudulent?””
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
Richard's voice broke.
“Three months later.””
Margaret gripped the wall.
“And you did nothing?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of whom?””
Richard didn't answer.
Then he said:
“Andrew.””
Margaret looked toward the hospital room.
“Where is he now?””
“I don't know.””
“Where are you?””
Richard hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“I'm in trouble.””
The line went dead.
Margaret immediately called Marcus.
At 6:34 p.m., Marcus received Margaret's call while standing outside the family office.
“Richard contacted me,” she said.
“What did he say?””
“He admitted signing the fraudulent amendment.””
My father closed his eyes.
“Did he say why?””
“He claims he was manipulated.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Did he mention Andrew?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
Margaret hesitated.
“He said he helped them.””
Marcus went completely still.
“Helped them with what?””
“I don't know. He wouldn't tell me.””
My father looked toward the street.
Then he noticed something.
A black SUV parked across the road.
The same vehicle from the security footage.
Its headlights were off.
Daniel followed his gaze.
“Marcus?””
The SUV suddenly started.
It pulled away.
My father began running.
“Hey!””
He reached the sidewalk just as the vehicle turned the corner.
Daniel caught up.
“Don't chase it!””
Marcus stopped.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Who is this?””
A woman's voice spoke.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Rachel Bennett.””
The nurse.
“I need to see you.””
“Where are you?””
“I'm at my sister's house.””
“What's happened?””
“Someone came here asking about Sophia.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Who?””
Rachel began crying.
“Andrew Wexler.””
My father felt his stomach tighten.
“What did he want?””
“He wanted the medical records.””
“Did you give them to him?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Rachel whispered:
“He threatened me.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Stay where you are. The police will protect you.””
Then she said something that made his blood run cold.
“Mr. Carter, I think Andrew knows where Lily is.””
That evening, a police officer was stationed outside my hospital room.
Another stood near the elevator.
Margaret had insisted on keeping the curtains closed.
Max was lying beside my bed.
I was playing with his ears when someone knocked.
Margaret looked up.
“Who is it?””
A nurse opened the door.
“Mrs. Carter, there's a visitor.””
Margaret stood immediately.
“Who?””
The nurse checked her clipboard.
“Mr. Richard Carter.””
Margaret's expression changed.
“Tell him we're not accepting visitors.””
But Richard was already standing in the doorway.
He looked terrible.
His shirt was untucked.
His face was pale.
There was a small cut above his eyebrow.
“Margaret, please.””
She stepped in front of the bed.
“Get out.””
“I need to see Lily.””
“No.””
“She's my niece.””
“And I'm her aunt. Leave.””
Richard looked toward me.
I smiled.
“Uncle Richard!””
He froze.
For a moment, his face crumpled.
He had known me since I was born.
He had held me at my christening.
He had bought me my first stuffed animal.
Now he couldn't even look at me without shame.
“Hello, sweetheart,” he whispered.
I reached toward him.
But Max stood up.
His body moved between Richard and my bed.
His ears were raised.
A low growl came from his throat.
Richard stopped.
“It's okay, Max.””
The dog didn't move.
Margaret looked at him.
“Even Max knows something is wrong.””
Richard lowered his head.
“I'm sorry.””
Margaret crossed her arms.
“Sorry for what?””
“For everything.””
“That's not an answer.””
Richard looked at me again.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Margaret immediately stepped forward.
“Don't.””
He pulled out a small photograph.
He placed it on the table.
It showed Sophia standing in the greenhouse.
Beside her was a woman in a nurse's uniform.
And behind them stood Richard.
The date was written on the back.
Three days before Sophia died.
Margaret picked it up.
“What is this?””
Richard swallowed.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Sophia wasn't the only one who knew about Vanessa.””
He sat down.
Then he began speaking.
“Three days before Sophia died, she called me. She told me she had discovered that Vanessa and Andrew were using the company to move money into offshore accounts.””
Margaret stared at him.
“Why didn't you tell Marcus?””
“Because Vanessa had already threatened me.””
“With what?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“She had documents showing that I'd approved several of the transfers.””
Margaret's face hardened.
“Had you?””
Richard nodded.
“Before I knew what they were doing.””
He rubbed his face.
“They used my signature to authorize payments. When I confronted Andrew, he told me I was already involved and that I could either cooperate or lose everything.””
Margaret looked at the photograph.
“And Sophia?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“She wanted me to help her expose them.””
“Did you?””
“I tried.””
He looked down.
“But Andrew found out.””
“What happened?””
Richard swallowed.
“He told me that if Sophia went to the police, he would make sure Marcus was implicated too.””
Margaret shook her head.
“That's not possible.””
Richard looked up.
“It's worse than you think.””
He leaned forward.
“Andrew had been secretly recording some of Marcus's business meetings. He had altered documents to make it appear that Marcus approved the fraudulent transfers.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“He was setting Marcus up?””
Richard nodded.
“And Sophia discovered the recordings.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Richard looked at me.
“That's why they wanted the trust.””
Margaret frowned.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Richard answered quietly.
“If Marcus were arrested or forced out of the company, Andrew could gain control through the trust amendment.””
Margaret stared.
“And Vanessa would become wealthy.””
Richard nodded.
“But that wasn't their only plan.””
He looked at Max.
Then back at me.
“If Lily died, Vanessa would inherit everything immediately.””
Margaret felt sick.
She turned toward the bed.
I was holding Max's collar.
I didn't understand the conversation.
I only knew that the adults were upset.
Richard reached into his pocket again.
This time, he removed a small silver key.
“I found this in Sophia's desk.””
Margaret took it.
“What does it open?””
Richard whispered:
“The safe in Andrew's office.””
Margaret stared at him.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because Sophia gave it to me.””
“Why didn't you give it to Marcus?””
Richard's eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid Andrew would find out.””
Margaret shook her head.
“You should have told your brother.””
“I know.””
Then Richard leaned forward.
“There is something else.””
“What?””
He looked directly at Margaret.
“The night Sophia died, I saw Vanessa leave the hospital carrying a small medical cooler.””
Margaret went still.
“What?””
“She told me it contained medication.””
“And?””
Richard's voice broke.
“I saw the same cooler in Andrew's car the following morning.””
Margaret slowly sat down.
Then the door opened.
Marcus entered.
He had arrived just in time to hear the final sentence.
He looked at his brother.
“Richard.””
Richard stood.
“Marcus.””
My father approached him.
“Tell me everything.””
Richard nodded.
Then he looked at me.
“I'm sorry, Lily.””
Max growled again.
Marcus glanced at the dog.
Then he turned back to Richard.
“You're going to tell the police everything.””
Richard nodded.
“I will.””
“Every document. Every signature. Every conversation.””
“Yes.””
“And if you leave anything out…”
“I won't.””
Marcus stared at his brother.
Then he asked the question that had haunted him since Sophia died.
“Did you know Vanessa was responsible for what happened to my wife?””
Richard looked down.
For a long time, he couldn't answer.
Finally, he whispered:
“I don't know if she caused Sophia's death.””
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“Then who does?””
Richard looked up.
His eyes were full of fear.
“The man who prescribed her medication.””
My father went completely still.
“Dr. Collins?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He swallowed.
Then he said:
“Dr. Collins didn't prescribe the medication that killed Sophia.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Then who did?””
Richard's answer was barely audible.
“Your mother.””
Margaret dropped the photograph.
Marcus stepped backward.
“My mother has been dead for eight years.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you talking about?””
Richard looked toward the hallway.
Then he whispered:
“Your mother had a private physician. He continued treating the family after she died.””
Marcus's face drained of color.
“Who?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Dr. Samuel Carter.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That isn't possible.””
“I'm sorry.””
“Samuel was our family doctor.””
Richard nodded.
“And he was the person who signed Sophia's final medication authorization.””
The room fell silent.
My father looked at me.
Then at Max.
Then back at his brother.
He had spent years believing Vanessa had entered his family and destroyed it.
But now he was beginning to understand that the betrayal might have started long before she ever met him.
And somewhere inside the hospital, a telephone began ringing.
Daniel answered it.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
“Marcus?””
My father turned.
“What?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“The police just searched Andrew Wexler's office.””
“And?””
“They found the original trust amendment.””
Marcus exhaled.
“Good.””
Daniel shook his head.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
Then at the photograph on the table.
“They also found a second birth certificate.””
Marcus frowned.
“What birth certificate?””
Daniel swallowed.
“One bearing your name.””
My father stared at him.
Daniel continued:
“But the child's name isn't Lily Carter.””
He placed the phone on the table.
“The document identifies another child as Sophia Carter's biological daughter.””
Marcus looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“That's impossible.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That's what we thought.””
Then he revealed the name printed beneath the photograph attached to the certificate.
*Emily Wexler.*
Richard suddenly began crying.
And my father realized that the next secret wasn't about inheritance.
May you like
It was about whether the daughter he had spent years raising was the only child Sophia had ever given birth to.
*And why had someone gone to such extraordinary lengths to make another little girl legally appear to be his wife's daughter?*
