Chapter 5: My Mother's Last Message

The next morning, my father returned to the hospital carrying a small wooden box.

He looked as though he hadn't slept.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His eyes were red.

And his wedding ring was missing.

Aunt Margaret stood beside my bed.

“Marcus, what happened?””

He placed the box on the chair.

“They arrested Vanessa for questioning.””

Margaret exhaled.

“Thank God.””

“But there's more.””

He looked at me.

I was sitting upright, eating pieces of toast.

When I saw him, I smiled.

“Daddy!””

He came over and lifted me into his arms.

“Hello, princess.””

I touched his cheek.

“Daddy sad?””

He closed his eyes briefly.

“Daddy's just tired.””

I wrapped my little arms around his neck.

Then I whispered:

“Max?””

My father smiled.

“I have something to tell you about Max.””

He placed me back on the bed.

“He's coming home today.””

My entire face brightened.

“MAX!””

Margaret laughed.

“Someone's excited.””

My father kissed my forehead.

“He's a very brave dog.””

I nodded seriously.

“My Max brave.””

“Yes, sweetheart. Very brave.””

Then Marcus looked at Margaret.

“Can you stay with Lily for a few minutes?””

She nodded.

He picked up the wooden box.

“Daniel and I need to examine something.””

At 9:30 a.m., Daniel arrived at the hospital.

He carried a laptop and a small audio recorder.

Marcus opened the box.

The recorder was inside.

It was an older model, with a small screen and several buttons.

There was a handwritten label on the back.

*For Marcus. Only play when Lily is safe.*

My father stared at it.

“Daniel, do you think this is Sophia?””

Daniel nodded.

“It's possible.””

Marcus pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

“Marcus?””

My father stopped breathing.

It was Sophia.

His wife.

The woman he had loved.

The woman he had buried.

“Marcus, if you're hearing this, something has happened to me.””

His eyes filled immediately.

Sophia continued.

“I hope I'm wrong. I hope you're listening to this years from now because you finally decided to clean out the greenhouse.””

A faint laugh came through the speaker.

Then her voice became serious.

“But if I'm right, please listen carefully.””

Marcus gripped the table.

“I need you to know that Vanessa did not enter our lives by accident.””

Daniel looked up.

Sophia continued.

“Andrew introduced us at the charity dinner. At the time, I believed he was simply trying to help me meet more people in Charlotte.””

A pause.

“But several months later, I discovered that Andrew and Vanessa had known each other for years.””

Marcus whispered:

“Years?””

The recording continued.

“They were involved in a company that had been used to move money out of Carter Development Group.””

Daniel began taking notes.

“I confronted Andrew. He told me it was a misunderstanding. Then I discovered the same company had been paying for Vanessa's personal expenses.””

Sophia took a breath.

“I should have told you immediately. But I needed proof.””

The recording crackled.

“And then I discovered something worse.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“What?””

Sophia's voice became quieter.

“Vanessa had been asking questions about Lily's inheritance.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I found emails between her and Andrew. They were discussing ways to gain control of the family trust.””

My father looked toward the ceiling.

“Oh, Sophia…”

The recording continued.

“They believed that if you married Vanessa, she would eventually become your legal spouse and gain influence over your estate.””

A brief silence followed.

“But they were wrong about one thing.””

Sophia laughed softly.

“I had already spoken to Daniel. Lily's inheritance is protected. No marriage certificate can give Vanessa ownership of it.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

The attorney nodded.

Sophia continued.

“However, there is a clause in the original agreement that Andrew discovered.””

Daniel sat straighter.

“What clause?”” he whispered.

The recording answered.

“If Lily dies before she reaches twenty-five, the trust passes to the designated secondary beneficiary.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Sophia's voice became barely audible.

“Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

My father stood abruptly.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That would explain everything.””

Sophia continued.

“I asked Daniel to change the arrangement, but Andrew had already filed a fraudulent amendment. He used an old authorization document to make it appear that I had approved Vanessa as the secondary beneficiary.””

Marcus looked horrified.

“Can they do that?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not legally. But they could make it expensive and complicated to challenge.””

The recording continued.

“I have evidence that the amendment is fraudulent. It's in the locked filing cabinet beneath the greenhouse.””

Marcus looked toward the wooden box.

Daniel nodded.

“We found the cabinet.””

Sophia's voice softened.

“Marcus, I need you to understand something.””

There was a long pause.

“I am afraid.””

My father covered his mouth.

“Not for myself. For Lily.””

The recording crackled again.

“I've noticed Vanessa watching her. She doesn't look at her the way a mother looks at a child.””

Marcus began crying.

“She looks at her as if she's an obstacle.””

Then Sophia said something that made the room feel unbearably cold.

“Yesterday, I found Vanessa standing beside Lily's crib at two in the morning.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“She was holding something.””

“What?””

Sophia answered.

“A small bottle.””

My father gripped the table.

“I asked her what it was. She said it was medicine for Lily.””

The recording continued.

“But Lily wasn't sick.””

A faint sound came through the speaker.

Then Sophia whispered:

“I took the bottle to the laboratory.””

Daniel stopped writing.

Marcus stared at the recorder.

“And the results?”” he asked, though he knew the answer wasn't meant for him.

Sophia's voice broke.

“The bottle contained a substance that could cause severe illness if administered repeatedly.””

My father sat down.

He looked physically sick.

“She was trying to poison Lily?””

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Marcus…”

Sophia continued.

“I confronted Vanessa. She denied everything. She told me I was becoming paranoid.””

A long silence followed.

Then Sophia spoke again.

“Marcus, I don't know how much time I have.””

My father began shaking his head.

“No. No, Sophia.””

“I've been feeling unwell. My doctors can't explain some of the symptoms. I suspect someone has been interfering with my medication.””

Daniel stood.

“That explains the toxicology report.””

Sophia's voice became urgent.

“If anything happens to me, please don't let Vanessa near Lily.””

Then, after a pause, she added:

“And please don't trust Andrew. He is more dangerous than Vanessa.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the hum of the air conditioner.

Finally, Marcus whispered:

“She knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew she was in danger.””

My father looked at the recorder.

Then he asked:

“Why didn't she tell me everything?””

Daniel answered carefully.

“Perhaps she was afraid they would act before she could protect Lily.””

Marcus lowered his head.

He had spent two years believing he had lost his wife to an illness.

Now he was beginning to understand that he might have lost her to someone who had sat at their dinner table.

Someone who had kissed him goodnight.

Someone who had called herself Lily's second mother.

At noon, Max arrived at the hospital.

He was wearing a blue recovery vest.

A veterinary nurse held his leash.

His paws were bandaged, and a small patch of fur had been shaved from his front leg.

But his tail began wagging the moment he saw me.

“MAX!””

I reached toward him.

The nurse helped him approach the bed.

He placed his front paws carefully on the edge.

Then he pushed his head against my chest.

I buried my face in his fur.

“Max! Max!””

He licked my cheek.

I laughed.

My father watched us.

For the first time in days, he smiled.

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“Well, look at that. The hero is home.””

Max gave a soft bark.

I hugged his neck.

“Good boy.””

Marcus crouched beside us.

“You saved her life, Max.””

The dog looked at him.

Then he returned his attention to me.

As if saving my life had been the most ordinary thing in the world.

That afternoon, Daniel received a telephone call.

He stepped into the hallway.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice answered.

“My name is Rachel Bennett. I used to work at St. Mary's Medical Center.””

Daniel immediately recognized the name.

The nurse.

Sophia's former caregiver.

“Ms. Bennett, thank you for calling.””

“I heard about the incident with Lily.””

“Yes.””

“I think I can help.””

Daniel looked toward the hospital room.

“What do you know?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“I was working the night Sophia was admitted. I remember Vanessa.””

Daniel grabbed his notebook.

“What about her?””

“She came into Sophia's room after visiting hours.””

“Was she alone?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

There was a long silence.

Then Rachel said:

“I saw her remove a medication bottle from Sophia's bedside table.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Did you report it?””

“I tried.””

“To whom?””

“The attending physician.””

“And?””

“He told me not to interfere.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Rachel's voice trembled.

“Because he was the one who had prescribed the medication.””

Daniel went completely still.

“Are you saying the doctor was involved?””

“I don't know. But I heard them arguing outside the room.””

“What did they say?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she answered:

“The doctor told Vanessa that if Sophia died, the medical records would be reviewed.””

Daniel's pen stopped moving.

“And Vanessa?””

“She said something I'll never forget.””

“What?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“She said, 'Then make sure she doesn't die in a way that raises questions.''”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Can you testify to that?””

“Yes.””

“Do you have any records?””

“I kept copies of the medication logs.””

Daniel looked toward the hospital room again.

“Where are you now?””

“I'm at my sister's house.””

“Don't go anywhere. I'll arrange for someone to contact you.””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“The doctor wasn't the only person who visited Sophia that night.””

Daniel's voice lowered.

“Who else?””

“Andrew Wexler.””

At 4:15 p.m., Marcus received another call.

This time, it was from the police.

“Mr. Carter, we've reviewed the greenhouse evidence.””

“What did you find?””

“Several fraudulent financial documents, medication records, and correspondence involving Mrs. Carter.””

Marcus stood.

“Is that enough to charge her?””

“Some of it, yes. But we need to establish the full extent of the conspiracy.””

“What about Andrew Wexler?””

The officer paused.

“We're looking into him.””

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

“Do it quickly.””

“We're also investigating Dr. Collins.””

Marcus ended the call.

Daniel approached him.

“There's something we need to discuss.””

“What?””

“The trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“What's wrong with it?””

Daniel placed a document on the table.

“Vanessa wasn't the only person named in the original agreement.””

He turned to the final page.

There were two secondary beneficiaries.

Vanessa Monroe.

And another name.

*Andrew Wexler.*

Marcus stared.

“Why would Sophia put Andrew there?””

“She didn't.””

Daniel pointed to the amendment date.

“This document was filed after Sophia's death.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then who authorized it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The signature is supposedly Sophia's.””

“Impossible.””

“That's what I believe.””

My father took the document.

Then he noticed the witness signature.

It belonged to someone he knew.

Someone who had attended his wedding.

Someone who had been present at Sophia's funeral.

His older brother.

Richard Carter.

Marcus slowly looked up.

“Richard?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your brother witnessed the amendment.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He told me he never had anything to do with the estate.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Then I think we have another problem.””

That evening, Marcus sat beside my hospital bed.

I was asleep.

Max was lying on the floor beside me.

My father held the photograph of Sophia.

He touched her face.

“I thought I knew everyone who loved you.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was protecting Lily.””

He looked at me.

“But I was wrong.””

Then he took out his phone and called his brother.

Richard answered after three rings.

“Marcus? What is it?””

My father didn't waste time.

“Did you witness an amendment to Sophia's family trust?””

Silence.

Then Richard laughed nervously.

“What are you talking about?””

“Your signature is on a document filed after her death.””

“I don't remember anything like that.””

“Richard.””

“What?””

“I'm looking at it.””

Another silence.

Then Richard said:

“Listen, Marcus. There are things you don't understand.””

My father stood.

“Then explain them.””

“Not over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because Andrew is involved.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

His attorney immediately began writing.

“Where are you?”” my father asked.

Richard whispered:

“I'm at the old family office.””

“Stay there.””

“Marcus, wait. There's something you need to know about Sophia.””

My father's grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

Richard's voice dropped.

“She wasn't the only one who knew Vanessa was dangerous.””

Marcus froze.

“Who else knew?””

Richard took a shaky breath.

Then he answered:

“Your mother.””

May you like

And before Marcus could ask another question, the line went dead.

*For the first time, my father began to wonder whether Vanessa had entered our family through one betrayal—or whether the entire Carter family had been hiding something from him.*
