Chapter 8: The Little Girl Who Knew My Mother

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa's voice was sharp enough to make Emily step backward.

The little girl held the hospital bracelet against her chest.

“I found it in the drawer.””

“Give it to me.””

Emily shook her head.

“It's mine.””

Vanessa approached.

“Emily, sweetheart, listen to me.””

The little girl began crying.

“Why does it have my name?””

Vanessa reached for the bracelet.

Emily pulled away.

“Why does that lady look like me?””

Vanessa froze.

For a moment, she considered lying again.

She had lied to Emily for almost four years.

She had told her that her mother had died.

That her father had moved away.

That the photographs were old family pictures belonging to someone else.

But now the child was asking questions.

And Vanessa was running out of answers.

“Give me the bracelet.””

Emily shook her head.

“Who is Sophia?””

Vanessa grabbed the object.

“She's nobody.””

Emily began sobbing.

“But she looks like me.””

Vanessa raised her voice.

“I said she's nobody!””

The little girl ran into the bedroom.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Then her phone rang.

It was Andrew.

She answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“At the office.””

“Marcus knows.””

Silence.

“What do you mean?””

“He knows about Emily.””

Andrew didn't speak for several seconds.

Then he said:

“How?””

“He found the hospital records.””

Andrew swore under his breath.

“Did he find Helen?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Damn it.””

“He has the photograph.””

Another silence.

Then Andrew said:

“Get Emily out of there.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“Take her somewhere safe.””

“She's four years old, Andrew. She isn't luggage.””

“Don't start.””

Vanessa looked toward the bedroom.

“Marcus is going to come for her.””

“Then don't let him.””

“How?””

Andrew's answer was chilling.

“Use the one thing he can't afford to lose.””

Vanessa understood.

“Lily.””

“Exactly.””

The call ended.

Vanessa stared at the phone.

Then she looked toward the bedroom.

For the first time, she realized that the little girl she had been hiding was no longer simply a bargaining tool.

Emily was evidence.

And if Marcus found her, the entire conspiracy could collapse.

At 10:30 a.m., my father arrived home.

He had barely slept.

The photographs from Helen were on the passenger seat.

Daniel had advised him not to confront Vanessa directly.

But Marcus had another priority.

He wanted to find Emily.

He entered the mansion.

The house was quiet.

Mrs. Eleanor approached him immediately.

“Sir?””

“Yes?””

“There's something you should see.””

She handed him a small envelope.

“Someone left this at the gate.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a photograph of me sleeping in my hospital bed.

His stomach tightened.

On the back, someone had written:

*ONE DAUGHTER IS ENOUGH.*

My father stared at the message.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“Who delivered this?””

“A man in a black car.””

“Did you see his face?””

“No, sir.””

Marcus immediately called Daniel.

“Someone is threatening Lily.””

Daniel's voice sharpened.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Get out of the house.””

“Why?””

“Because if they're threatening Lily, they may be watching you.””

Marcus looked toward the windows.

Then he noticed something.

The front security camera was turned toward the driveway.

But the garden camera was offline.

Again.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “someone has access to the security system.””

“I'll send the police.””

Marcus walked toward the study.

He opened the computer.

The system showed a recent login.

The username was unfamiliar.

But the access location was not.

It came from inside the house.

He checked the user history.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*ELEANOR HAYES.*

My father's blood ran cold.

Mrs. Eleanor had worked for the Carter family for eleven years.

She had cared for Sophia during her final months.

She had helped raise me.

She had cried at my mother's funeral.

And she had been the one who found me beside the pool after my father jumped in.

Marcus found her in the laundry room.

“Eleanor.””

She turned.

“Sir?””

“Come with me.””

She followed him into the study.

He closed the door.

Then he placed the printed security log on the desk.

“Why have you been accessing the cameras?””

Eleanor looked at the document.

Her face went pale.

“I can explain.””

“Please do.””

She sat down.

Then she began crying.

“I didn't know they would hurt Lily.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Who?””

Eleanor covered her face.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“Vanessa?””

She nodded.

“And Andrew.””

My father stood.

“How long?””

“Since before Sophia died.””

Marcus stepped backward.

“What?””

Eleanor wiped her eyes.

“They paid me to tell them when you were away. They wanted to know when Sophia was alone.””

My father's voice became a whisper.

“You helped them?””

“I was frightened.””

“You watched them enter my house.””

“I didn't know what they intended.””

Marcus slammed his hand against the desk.

“My wife is dead. My daughter nearly drowned. And you expect me to believe you knew nothing?””

Eleanor flinched.

“I didn't know about the medication.””

“What did you know?””

She opened her handbag.

Inside was a small envelope.

“I kept this because I was afraid.””

Marcus took it.

The envelope contained printed messages.

Some were between Eleanor and Vanessa.

Others were between Eleanor and Andrew.

One message was dated three days before Sophia died.

Vanessa:

Is the medication ready?

Andrew:

Everything has been arranged.

Eleanor:

Mrs. Carter is asking questions.

Vanessa:

Then keep her away from the study.

My father stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

Andrew:

And the child?

Vanessa:

Once Sophia is gone, we can deal with the child.

Marcus slowly looked up.

“Why didn't you give me this?””

Eleanor sobbed.

“Because Andrew told me he would destroy my son if I spoke.””

Marcus froze.

“Your son?””

She nodded.

“Andrew paid for his rehabilitation treatment after an accident. Then he told me I owed him.””

Marcus looked at the messages again.

“What happened to your son?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don't know. I haven't heard from him in three weeks.””

Marcus immediately called the police.

Then he looked at her.

“Do you know where Emily is?””

Eleanor nodded.

“I heard Vanessa talking about a house outside the city.””

“Where?””

“Near Lake Norman.””

Marcus picked up his keys.

Daniel's warning echoed in his mind.

Don't confront them alone.

But he couldn't wait.

Not when another little girl might be in danger.

At 11:45 a.m., Marcus and two police officers arrived at the property near Lake Norman.

The house was large but isolated.

A black SUV was parked outside.

The front door was unlocked.

One officer approached first.

“Police!””

No answer.

They entered.

The living room was empty.

A child's drawing lay on the floor.

Marcus picked it up.

Three figures.

A man.

A woman.

And a little girl.

On the back, in childish handwriting, were two words.

*MY FAMILY.*

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

Then he heard a small voice.

“Who's there?””

A little girl appeared at the top of the stairs.

Blonde hair.

Brown eyes.

A pink sweater.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Emily.

She looked exactly like the photograph.

“Hello,” he whispered.

The little girl gripped the railing.

“Are you the police?””

“No, sweetheart.””

“Are you my daddy?””

Marcus felt his heart break.

He approached slowly.

“My name is Marcus.””

Emily looked at him.

Then she asked:

“Do you know my mommy?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Is she dead?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I'm afraid she is.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Vanessa said she didn't want me.””

Marcus knelt.

“No, sweetheart. That's not true.””

“She said my mommy gave me away.””

He shook his head.

“Your mommy loved you very much.””

Emily stared at him.

Then she slowly walked down the stairs.

“Do you have a picture?””

Marcus removed the photograph from his jacket.

It showed Sophia holding Emily as a newborn.

Emily touched the paper.

Then she whispered:

“That's my mommy.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

The little girl began crying.

He opened his arms.

She stepped into them.

And for the first time in four years, Emily was held by someone who knew the woman who had given birth to her.

But the reunion was interrupted.

A police officer entered the room.

“Mr. Carter, we found something.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

The officer held up a small mobile telephone.

“It's been recording.””

Marcus frowned.

“Recording what?””

“Conversations.””

The officer pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

“Emily cannot meet Marcus.””

Andrew answered.

“She already knows too much.””

“Then we move her tonight.””

“And Lily?””

Vanessa paused.

“Lily is the priority.””

Andrew laughed.

“Why?””

“Because once she's gone, the trust is ours.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Emily clung to his jacket.

The recording continued.

Then Andrew said something that made the officers exchange looks.

“There's another problem.””

“What?””

“Robert's old documents.””

Vanessa sighed.

“I thought you destroyed them.””

“I destroyed the copies.””

“And the originals?””

A pause.

Then Andrew answered:

“Your father kept them.””

Marcus froze.

Vanessa's father.

Who was her father?

The recording continued.

“Does he still have the original medical records?””

Andrew replied:

“Yes.””

“Then we need to find him.””

Marcus looked at Daniel, who had just entered the house.

“Who is Vanessa's father?””

Daniel checked his notes.

“Her name before marriage was Vanessa Monroe.””

He paused.

“Her father's name was Thomas Monroe.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why does that matter?””

Daniel opened a document.

“Because Thomas Monroe was the chief administrator at St. Mary's Medical Center when Sophia died.””

Marcus looked down at Emily.

Then back at the recording.

The conspiracy was larger than he had imagined.

That afternoon, Emily was taken to a protected location.

My father arranged for a child psychologist to meet her.

He didn't want to frighten her.

He didn't want her to feel that she was being taken away again.

And he wanted to know whether she understood what had happened.

At the hospital, I was sitting beside Max when my father returned.

He entered carrying a small photograph.

I immediately reached for him.

“Daddy!””

He lifted me.

“Hello, princess.””

Then he showed me the picture.

It was Sophia holding a baby.

“Mommy!””

“Yes.””

He pointed to the baby.

“And this is Emily.””

I tilted my head.

“Baby?””

“Yes, sweetheart. Your sister.””

I didn't understand.

“Lily sister?””

My father smiled through tears.

“Yes. You have a sister.””

I touched the photograph.

“Where?””

“She's safe.””

I looked toward Max.

Then back at Daddy.

“Emily play?””

My father laughed softly.

“Someday, sweetheart.””

He kissed my forehead.

Then he looked at the photograph.

“Someday, you'll both know how much your mother loved you.””

At 7:20 p.m., Daniel received an urgent call from the police.

Thomas Monroe had been located.

He was living in a private residence outside Raleigh.

And he had agreed to cooperate.

But before the officers could reach him, someone entered his house.

The security system recorded the visitor.

A woman.

Wearing a black coat.

Carrying a small suitcase.

Vanessa.

She entered at 6:58 p.m.

She left twelve minutes later.

Thomas Monroe was never seen again.

When police arrived, they found the house empty.

His medication was still on the kitchen counter.

His glasses were beside the telephone.

And on the dining table was a single sheet of paper.

A handwritten confession.

It contained a list of names.

A list of payments.

And a final sentence.

*I did not help Vanessa destroy Sophia's life because I wanted money. I helped because Sophia knew the truth about my daughter.*

Daniel read the statement twice.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“What truth?””

Marcus stared at the page.

“About Vanessa?””

Daniel nodded.

My father slowly lowered himself into a chair.

And then he noticed the final attachment.

It was a copy of an old medical report.

The patient name was Sophia Carter.

The date was two weeks before her death.

But the signature at the bottom belonged to Thomas Monroe.

And the diagnosis was not what Marcus expected.

*PREGNANCY — APPROXIMATELY EIGHT WEEKS.*

My father stared.

Sophia had been pregnant.

After Emily.

After Lily.

And no one had told him.

But the next line was even more disturbing.

*FETAL PATERNITY: UNCONFIRMED.*

Marcus looked up.

“Who was the father?””

Daniel turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

A name.

*ANDREW WEXLER.*

My father felt the blood drain from his face.

Because the woman he had loved had apparently been carrying another man's child when she died.

And Vanessa had known.

But why?

What had Sophia discovered about Andrew that was so dangerous?

And why had she hidden it from her husband?

At 11:56 p.m., Marcus received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Sophia standing outside the hospital.

Andrew beside her.

And Vanessa holding a newborn baby.

The message beneath it read:

*YOU HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS, MARCUS. BUT YOU NEVER KNEW THE THIRD CHILD EXISTED.*

My father stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*ASK YOUR BROTHER WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BABY.*

He immediately called Richard.

No answer.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Then his phone rang.

It was Richard.

“Marcus…”

My father stood.

“Where are you?””

Richard's voice was trembling.

“I'm sorry.””

“Where are you?””

“I found the original medical records.””

“Richard, listen to me. What baby?””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard whispered:

“The baby Sophia was carrying wasn't Andrew's.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Then whose was it?””

Richard took a shaky breath.

And answered:

“Yours.””

The call disconnected.

My father stared at the screen.

Then he looked toward my hospital bed.

He had spent years believing he had one daughter.

Yesterday, he had discovered two.

And now he was being told that Sophia had been pregnant with another child when she died.

A child whose existence had been erased.

May you like

A child whose father was Marcus Carter.

And somewhere, Vanessa Monroe knew exactly where that child was.
