Chapter 10: The Truth Sophia Left Behind
“Which one?””
Those two words followed Marcus Carter long after the telephone call ended.
He stood inside the abandoned Carter Children's Foundation building, staring at the phone in his hand.
Three daughters.
Three different birth records.
Three secrets.
And now someone was telling him that the little girl he had raised, protected, and nearly lost beside a swimming pool might not be his biological child.
Daniel stood a few feet away.
His face was pale.
“Marcus, we need to talk.””
My father slowly turned.
“No more secrets.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
“No more protecting me from the truth. No more deciding what I can handle. Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked toward the photograph of Sophia on the wall.
Then he finally spoke.
“Six weeks before she died, Sophia came to my office. She was carrying a sealed envelope. She told me that Vanessa had discovered something about the children.””
“What children?””
“All three.””
Marcus frowned.
“Emily, Olivia, and Lily?””
Daniel nodded.
“She believed someone had been manipulating the medical records since before Lily was born.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What did that have to do with Lily?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Sophia had received a DNA report. According to the report, Lily wasn't biologically related to you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That's impossible.””
“I know.””
“She was born during our marriage. I was there. I held her.””
“I know, Marcus.””
“Then how could she not be mine?””
Daniel opened his briefcase.
He removed a document that had been folded several times.
“This is the report Sophia gave me.””
Marcus snatched it.
The document contained two names.
Marcus Carter.
Lily Carter.
The result was unmistakable.
<escape>Probability of paternity: 0.00%.</escape>
My father stared at the page.
His fingers began trembling.
“Who is her father?””
Daniel shook his head.
“The original report doesn't identify him.””
“Then why did Sophia believe Vanessa was involved?””
“Because Vanessa had access to the hospital records. She also knew the identity of the person who had donated genetic material during Sophia's fertility treatment.””
Marcus looked up.
“Fertility treatment?””
Daniel nodded.
“Before Lily was born, Sophia experienced complications. She underwent treatment at St. Mary's.””
Marcus remembered.
The appointments.
The injections.
The weeks when Sophia had seemed exhausted.
She had told him everything was fine.
He had believed her.
Daniel continued.
“Your father arranged the treatment through a private physician. Sophia later discovered that the clinic's records had been altered.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Are you telling me someone switched the samples?””
“That's one possibility.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Andrew Wexler.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Andrew again.
Always Andrew.
Two hours later, the police recovered an old storage box from the foundation building.
It contained financial records, medical correspondence, and several handwritten letters.
One envelope was addressed to Marcus.
The handwriting belonged to Sophia.
He recognized it immediately.
His wife had always written his name with a small curve beneath the final letter.
He opened it.
My darling Marcus,
If you're reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything while I was alive.
I need you to understand something before you make any decisions about our children.
Blood does not determine who a parent is.
Love does.
I know there are things you may discover that will hurt you. I know you may question the past. But please don't allow the people who have manipulated our family to decide what your daughters mean to you.
Lily is your daughter in every way that matters.
Emily is your daughter in every way that matters.
And Olivia is a child who deserves the chance to grow up knowing that she was wanted.
There is something else.
The person responsible for the confusion surrounding Lily's birth isn't who you think.
Marcus stopped reading.
He looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Marcus continued.
I made a terrible mistake by trusting the wrong people. I believed I could protect everyone by keeping quiet.
But Vanessa discovered the truth.
She knows who Lily's biological father is.
And she knows why I refused to let her become part of our family.
The letter ended with one final sentence.
Look inside the blue book.
Marcus turned the envelope upside down.
A small brass key fell onto the table.
Daniel examined it.
“What's it for?””
Marcus looked at the key.
Then he remembered something.
Sophia's library.
The blue book.
She had owned hundreds of books, but there was one she never allowed anyone to touch.
A large blue leather-bound journal.
It had disappeared shortly after her funeral.
Marcus had assumed the housekeeper had packed it away.
Now he understood.
Someone had taken it deliberately.
At 4:30 p.m., Marcus returned to the mansion.
He went straight to the old library.
The room had barely changed since Sophia's death.
Tall wooden bookshelves covered the walls.
A large reading chair stood beside the window.
The afternoon sunlight fell across the carpet.
Max followed Marcus inside.
The dog sniffed the bottom shelf, then sat beside a cabinet.
Marcus crouched.
There was a small brass lock hidden behind the lower drawer.
The key fit perfectly.
He opened it.
Inside was the blue journal.
His hands shook as he lifted it out.
The first pages contained Sophia's ordinary notes.
Recipes.
Shopping lists.
Little reminders about Lily.
Then he reached a section marked with a date.
Three weeks before her death.
The handwriting became hurried.
Andrew came to see me again.
He says the documents are safe.
I don't believe him.
Vanessa knows about Lily.
Marcus turned the page.
I finally understand what happened at St. Mary's.
Another page.
The clinic never used Marcus's samples.
They used Robert's.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Robert Carter.
His father.
He continued reading.
Robert had secretly arranged for his genetic material to be used during my fertility treatment. He believed Marcus would never discover it.
When I became pregnant with Lily, I thought she was Marcus's child.
I only learned the truth after Robert died and the original records were uncovered.
Marcus sat down.
He read the sentence again.
His father had fathered Lily.
Not Andrew.
Not a stranger.
His own father.
Which meant Lily was biologically his half-sister.
The little girl he had raised as his daughter was also his father's child.
And Sophia had known.
Max nudged his hand.
Marcus looked down.
The golden retriever rested his head against his knee.
“It's all right, boy,” Marcus whispered.
But his voice broke.
“It doesn't change anything.””
He turned another page.
And found a photograph.
Sophia holding Lily.
Beside it was a handwritten message.
Robert wanted Lily because he believed the Carter family needed another heir.
He told me that Marcus would eventually accept the truth.
But I refused to let him take my daughter.
Marcus covered his mouth.
His father had been dead for years.
Yet his decisions had continued destroying their family.
Then he found another note.
Vanessa has been working with Andrew to obtain the original documents.
They believe Lily's biological identity will give them grounds to challenge the Carter inheritance.
But they are wrong.
Beneath the message was a photocopy of a legal document.
A document Marcus had never seen.
It was a declaration signed by Robert Carter.
The document stated that any child born through his unauthorized fertility arrangement would have no claim to the Carter estate.
It also contained a separate clause.
If anyone attempted to use the child's identity to challenge the inheritance, the entire estate would be transferred into an irrevocable trust for the children.
Marcus read the document twice.
Then he smiled bitterly.
His father had created the very protection Vanessa had spent years trying to destroy.
But why had Sophia hidden it?
The answer was on the next page.
Because Robert wasn't the only person who knew.
At 6:15 p.m., Daniel entered the library.
“Marcus, we've located Andrew.””
My father closed the journal.
“Where?””
“An estate outside Raleigh.””
“Is Vanessa with him?””
“Yes.””
Daniel paused.
“And there's something else.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
“The police found Olivia's adoptive parents.””
“Are they safe?””
“They are. They never knew the full story.””
Marcus stood.
“Where is Olivia?””
“She's with them.””
“Then why haven't we brought her home?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because the adoption records have been legally challenged. We need to establish the child's identity and make sure the transition is handled properly.””
Marcus nodded.
He understood.
He had spent years watching adults make decisions about children without considering what those children needed.
He wouldn't repeat their mistakes.
“Arrange a meeting,” he said.
“I want to meet the family.””
The following morning, Marcus met James and Laura Whitmore.
They were a middle-aged couple who had raised Olivia since she was an infant.
Laura cried throughout the meeting.
“We didn't know,” she said.
Marcus sat opposite her.
“Didn't know what?””
“That the adoption paperwork was fraudulent.””
James reached for his wife's hand.
“We loved Olivia. We still love her.””
Marcus nodded.
“I don't doubt that.””
Laura looked at him.
“Are you going to take her away?””
Marcus considered the question.
Then he answered honestly.
“I want my daughter to know her family. But I don't want her to lose the people who have loved her.””
Laura began crying harder.
Marcus placed Sophia's letter on the table.
“She wanted Olivia to grow up surrounded by love. That's what I'm going to give her.””
James looked at the photograph.
“Does she know?””
“Not yet.””
Laura nodded.
“We'll help however we can.””
For the first time, Marcus felt that something in his family might finally be repaired.
Not through revenge.
Not through money.
But through people choosing to do what was right.
Meanwhile, the police were questioning Andrew Wexler.
He denied everything.
He denied manipulating the medical records.
He denied arranging the fraudulent adoption.
He denied threatening Richard.
But when investigators showed him the blue journal, his expression changed.
They placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Robert Carter holding newborn Lily.
Andrew stared at it.
Then he laughed.
“You people still don't understand.””
The investigator leaned forward.
“Explain.””
Andrew looked directly at him.
“Robert was the beginning of all this.””
“What do you mean?””
Andrew's smile disappeared.
“Robert knew Sophia was going to expose him. He knew she had discovered what he'd done at the clinic.””
“And Vanessa?””
“Vanessa wanted the money.””
“Why did you help her?””
Andrew leaned back.
“Because Robert promised me half the company if I kept quiet.””
The investigator stared.
“Your half-brother promised you half the company?””
Andrew laughed again.
“He promised a lot of things.””
“Did he arrange the drowning of Lily Carter?””
Andrew's expression changed.
“I never told Vanessa to kill the child.””
“But you knew she planned to harm her?””
Andrew remained silent.
The investigator pushed another photograph across the table.
It showed Vanessa standing beside the swimming pool on the day Lily nearly drowned.
Andrew looked away.
The investigator spoke quietly.
“Your silence isn't helping you.””
Andrew finally answered.
“Vanessa was supposed to scare the child.””
“Why?””
“To make Marcus believe he couldn't protect her.””
“And what happened?””
Andrew closed his eyes.
“Max ruined everything.””
For the first time, the investigators understood.
The drowning had not been an isolated act.
It had been part of a calculated plan.
Vanessa wanted Marcus emotionally broken.
She wanted him to become dependent on her.
And she wanted control of the trust before the children could inherit anything.
But the plan had failed because a golden retriever had jumped into the swimming pool.
Three days later, Marcus visited Vanessa in the detention facility.
She sat across from him wearing a plain gray sweater.
Her expensive jewelry was gone.
Her perfectly styled hair had been replaced by a simple ponytail.
She looked smaller.
But her eyes were still cold.
“Marcus.””
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Sophia holding all three babies.
Vanessa glanced at it.
Then looked away.
“You've been busy.””
“Why?””
She laughed softly.
“That's a very broad question.””
“Why did you hurt my daughter?””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Which one?””
Marcus didn't react.
“Lily.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Your precious little Lily.””
“Why did you push her?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“She was in the way.””
Marcus stared at her.
“She was three years old.””
“And?””
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he stood.
“You watched her drown.””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“She was always getting everything.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“Your attention. Your money. Your protection. Even that ridiculous dog.””
Marcus slowly sat down.
Vanessa continued.
“Sophia was dead, but you still loved her. You never stopped. Every photograph, every memory, every little thing in that house belonged to her.””
“She was my wife.””
“And I was your wife!””
Vanessa slammed her hand against the table.
“I gave you everything. I managed your household. I stood beside you at charity events. I gave up my own life to become part of your family.””
“You married me for my money.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“I married you because I deserved what Sophia had.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. You wanted what she left behind.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You think you're innocent? Your family destroyed mine long before I arrived.””
“Then why take it out on children?””
Her face changed.
For the first time, she had no immediate answer.
Marcus placed one final document on the table.
It was the original trust agreement.
“Robert left the estate to the children. All three of them.””
Vanessa stared.
“He promised me—”
“Robert is dead.””
“He promised me the money!””
“And Sophia protected the children from you.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
“You'll regret this.””
Marcus stood.
“No, Vanessa. The only thing I regret is believing you loved my family.””
He walked toward the door.
Behind him, Vanessa shouted:
“You'll never know who Lily really is!””
Marcus stopped.
He turned.
“I already know.””
Vanessa went silent.
Marcus looked at her one final time.
“She's my daughter.””
Then he left.
Six months later, the Carter mansion was no longer a place of fear.
The security system had been replaced.
The swimming pool had been covered during renovations.
And the old library had become a room where three little girls could play.
Emily loved drawing.
Olivia loved books.
And Lily loved Max.
The golden retriever was older now.
His muzzle had turned white.
But he still followed the girls everywhere.
One afternoon, the three children sat on the living-room carpet.
Emily held a photograph of Sophia.
Olivia was looking through a picture book.
And Lily was trying to put a pink ribbon around Max's neck.
“Max pretty!”” I announced.
Emily laughed.
“He's a boy!””
I frowned.
“Pretty boy!””
Olivia giggled.
My father stood in the doorway, watching them.
He had finally received the results of the additional genetic testing.
They confirmed the truth.
Lily was Robert Carter's biological daughter.
Emily was the biological daughter of Robert and Sophia.
Olivia was the biological daughter of Marcus and Sophia.
The family tree was complicated.
But the girls were innocent.
And Marcus had made one decision that no document could change.
They were all his daughters.
He walked into the room.
“Girls?””
Three little faces turned toward him.
“Yes, Daddy?””
He knelt beside them.
“Do you know what your mommy wanted most?””
Emily shook her head.
Olivia looked up.
“What?””
Marcus smiled.
“She wanted you to love each other.””
He handed them three small envelopes.
Each contained a letter from Sophia.
He had found them hidden inside the blue journal.
One was addressed to Lily.
One to Emily.
And one to Olivia.
They weren't long letters.
But each contained the same promise.
You were never unwanted.
You were never a mistake.
You were loved before you ever opened your eyes.
Marcus watched his daughters read the letters with the help of their nanny.
Then Lily crawled into his lap.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, princess?””
“Mommy see us?””
His eyes filled.
“I think she'd be very proud of you.””
Lily smiled.
“Mommy love Max?””
Marcus laughed softly.
“She loved Max very much.””
Max lifted his head at the sound of his name.
Then he walked over and rested his chin on Marcus's knee.
My father stroked his golden fur.
“You saved my little girl, didn't you?””
Max wagged his tail.
Marcus looked toward the swimming pool outside.
For years, he had remembered that afternoon as the day his family almost ended.
Now he understood that it was also the day the truth began to come out.
The security footage had exposed Vanessa.
Richard's confession had revealed the hidden children.
Sophia's journal had uncovered the medical conspiracy.
And three little girls had finally been given the chance to know one another.
Vanessa and Andrew were eventually convicted for their roles in the conspiracy, fraud, and the attempted killing of Lily. Eleanor cooperated with investigators and was given consideration for her testimony. The original trust was restored, protecting the children's inheritance until they were adults.
But Marcus never celebrated the money.
He changed the name of the family foundation.
It became the Sophia Carter Children's Foundation.
Its mission was simple:
To protect children whose families had failed them.
And every year, on the anniversary of the afternoon Max saved Lily, Marcus took his daughters to the garden where Sophia's favorite white lilies grew.
He told them stories about their mother.
How she sang while cooking.
How she loved old books.
How she believed every child deserved to feel safe.
And how she had left behind three daughters who would never have to wonder whether they were loved.
One evening, as the sun disappeared behind the oak trees, Lily approached Max.
She wrapped her little arms around his neck.
“Good boy, Max.””
The dog licked her cheek.
My father watched from the terrace.
Emily and Olivia were laughing nearby.
For the first time in many years, the mansion sounded like a home again.
Marcus looked toward Sophia's portrait through the open library doors.
Then he whispered:
“I kept my promise, sweetheart.””
He had not saved every secret.
He had not prevented every tragedy.
But he had saved the children.
And in the end, that was what Sophia had wanted all along.
