Chapter 7: The Daughter Hidden From the World

“Emily Wexler.””

My father repeated the name as though saying it aloud might somehow make it less real.

Daniel placed the photocopy of the birth certificate on the hospital table.

The document appeared legitimate.

It carried the seal of a North Carolina county registrar, a date of birth, and Sophia Carter's name listed as the mother.

But the father's name was missing.

Marcus stared at the photograph attached to the document.

A little girl with blonde hair and brown eyes.

She looked approximately two years old.

“Who is she?”” he demanded.

Richard sat down heavily.

“I think she's Andrew's daughter.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You think?””

Richard wiped his face.

“I never met her. I only heard Vanessa mention her.””

“When?””

“About a year before Sophia died.””

Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.

“Why would Sophia be listed as her mother?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“I've already contacted the county registrar. The certificate is authentic as a document, but the underlying registration may have been altered.””

“Altered how?””

“Someone appears to have filed a delayed birth registration using Sophia's medical records.””

Marcus stared at him.

“That's impossible. Sophia never had another child.””

“Not according to the records we have.””

My father shook his head.

“I was with her through every pregnancy. Lily was our only child.””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

Marcus turned.

“Then start talking.””

Richard swallowed.

“After Sophia died, Andrew asked me to deliver an envelope to Vanessa.””

“What was inside?””

“A photograph. And a hospital discharge summary.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What hospital?””

“St. Mary's.””

“Which department?””

Richard hesitated.

“Newborn services.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Why would Sophia have a newborn discharge summary?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know. But Vanessa told me the baby had been given to another family.””

Silence filled the room.

Marcus looked at the birth certificate again.

“Are you telling me Sophia had another child?””

“I don't know.””

“Was she pregnant?””

Richard nodded slowly.

My father's expression changed.

“When?””

“Before Lily was born.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. Sophia gave birth to Lily. We brought her home together.””

Richard looked miserable.

“I'm not saying she gave birth to another child after Lily.””

He paused.

“I'm saying there may have been another baby before Lily.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel was already examining the birth certificate.

Then he noticed the date.

He compared it with the dates in Sophia's medical file.

His expression changed.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“The date on this certificate is incorrect.””

“How?””

“The child's recorded birth date is eleven months before Lily's.””

Marcus frowned.

“And?””

Daniel pointed to another document.

“Sophia's medical records show she underwent an emergency procedure during that period.””

Marcus slowly sat down.

He remembered that year.

Sophia had told him she needed a minor operation.

She had stayed with her sister for several days.

He had been traveling for business at the time.

When he returned, she had seemed exhausted.

He had asked whether everything was all right.

She had smiled and said yes.

Now he wondered what she had been hiding.

“Get me the original hospital records,” he said.

Daniel nodded.

“I'll request them.””

Then Richard spoke again.

“Marcus, there's something else about Emily.””

My father turned.

“What?””

“Vanessa told me she was going to become part of the family.””

Marcus frowned.

“Meaning?””

Richard looked toward the hospital door.

“She said that once the trust was transferred, Emily would inherit a portion of the estate.””

Marcus stared.

“Why would she say that?””

Richard's voice dropped.

“Because she claimed Emily was Sophia's firstborn daughter.””

At 2:15 p.m., Daniel received a call from the registrar.

The original birth registration had been submitted through a private legal office.

The person who signed the application was Andrew Wexler.

The witness was Vanessa Monroe.

But the medical provider listed on the form was not a hospital.

It was a private maternity clinic outside Charlotte.

Daniel immediately requested the clinic's records.

An hour later, he received an email.

The clinic had closed three years earlier.

Its records had supposedly been transferred to a storage facility.

But when the investigator contacted the storage company, they discovered that several boxes had been removed.

The authorization had been signed by Dr. Samuel Carter.

Marcus read the email twice.

“My mother's physician?””

Daniel nodded.

“He appears to have had access to the clinic's records.””

“Why?””

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“Did Vanessa know about this?””

Richard nodded.

“She told me the child was the key to everything.””

“What did she mean?””

Richard swallowed.

“She said Sophia had made a promise to someone before she married you.””

Marcus stared.

“What promise?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know. But Vanessa said you would never understand why Sophia chose you unless you knew about Emily.””

Marcus turned away.

For several seconds, he stared through the hospital window.

Then he looked back.

“Find Emily.””

Daniel nodded.

“We're already trying.””

That evening, Aunt Margaret arrived with dinner.

She placed a bag on the counter and immediately noticed the documents.

“What happened?””

Marcus handed her the birth certificate.

She read it.

Then she looked up.

“Who is this child?””

“We don't know.””

Margaret examined the photograph.

Then something strange happened.

She dropped the paper.

Her face went pale.

“Margaret?”” Marcus asked.

She slowly picked it up.

“I've seen her before.””

Everyone turned.

“Where?”” Daniel asked.

Margaret looked at the photograph again.

“At Sophia's funeral.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Margaret nodded.

“There was a little girl standing outside the church.””

Richard looked up sharply.

“What did she look like?””

“Blonde hair. Brown eyes. She was holding the hand of an older woman.””

Margaret paused.

“I thought she was someone's granddaughter.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't think anything of it.””

She looked at the photograph.

“But I remember Sophia's friend Andrew taking her away when the service ended.””

Daniel wrote something down.

“Do you remember the older woman?””

Margaret nodded.

“I think her name was Helen.””

Richard suddenly stood.

“Helen?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes.””

Richard's face changed.

“Helen was Sophia's private nurse.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where is she now?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Daniel looked at the birth certificate.

Then at the hospital discharge summary.

Then at the handwritten note from Sophia.

Something wasn't adding up.

“If Emily was born before Lily,” he said, “why was she not mentioned in Sophia's will?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Because perhaps she wasn't Sophia's daughter.””

Margaret frowned.

“Then why use her name?””

Daniel closed the folder.

“That's what we're going to find out.””

At 8:40 p.m., a police investigator called.

They had located Helen.

She was living in a small retirement community outside Asheville.

And she had agreed to meet them.

But there was a condition.

She wanted to speak to Marcus alone.

The following morning, Marcus drove to Asheville.

Daniel accompanied him.

They found Helen sitting beside a window in a quiet retirement home.

She was in her seventies, with silver hair and delicate hands.

When Marcus entered, she immediately began crying.

“Mr. Carter.””

Marcus pulled up a chair.

“You knew my wife?””

Helen nodded.

“I loved Sophia.””

“Then please tell me who Emily is.””

Helen looked down.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she reached into her handbag.

She removed a photograph.

It showed Sophia holding a newborn baby.

Marcus stared.

He recognized the room.

It was the private maternity clinic.

And the baby was not Lily.

Helen whispered:

“Emily was born fourteen months before Lily.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Who was her father?””

Helen looked at him.

“Your father.””

The room became silent.

Marcus slowly opened his eyes.

“My father?””

Helen nodded.

“Your father, Robert Carter, had an affair with Sophia before she married you.””

Marcus stood.

“That is impossible.””

“I wish it were.””

“My father was married to my mother.””

Helen lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“Why would Sophia hide this?””

Helen's voice trembled.

“Because she discovered the truth after Emily was born.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What truth?””

Helen took another photograph from her handbag.

It showed Robert Carter holding the newborn baby.

Behind him stood Andrew Wexler.

And beside them was a much younger Vanessa Monroe.

Marcus stared at the image.

He felt the room tilt.

“Vanessa knew my father?””

Helen nodded.

“She was working for Andrew at the time. She helped arrange the private adoption.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Adoption?””

Helen nodded.

“Emily was supposed to be placed with a family outside North Carolina. But Sophia changed her mind.””

“Why?””

“Because she couldn't bear to lose her.””

Helen began crying.

“She wanted to raise Emily herself. But Robert threatened her. He said the scandal would destroy the family and the company.””

Marcus lowered himself into the chair.

“So she gave the baby away?””

Helen shook her head.

“No. She believed the baby had been placed with a loving family.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Then why was Emily's birth certificate altered after Sophia died?””

Helen hesitated.

“Because the family who adopted Emily returned her.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Helen nodded.

“Her adoptive parents discovered that the adoption documents were fraudulent. They contacted Andrew.””

“And what happened?””

Helen's voice became almost inaudible.

“Andrew took Emily back.””

Marcus felt sick.

“Where is she?””

Helen looked directly at him.

“I don't know.””

Then she reached into her bag one final time.

She removed a sealed envelope.

“This was meant for you.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a letter written by Sophia.

The first sentence made his heart stop.

*Marcus, if you ever discover the truth about Emily, remember that she is innocent of everything our families have done.*

Beneath the letter was a photograph.

This time, Sophia was holding two babies.

One was Lily.

The other was Emily.

On the back, she had written:

*My two little girls.*

Marcus began to cry.

But there was something else.

A second line.

*If anything happens to me, the person who knows where Emily is will be the last person you should trust.*

Daniel looked up.

“Who?””

Marcus turned the photograph over again.

Beneath the message was a name.

*Vanessa.*

That afternoon, while Marcus was returning to Charlotte, a little girl sat inside a large house outside the city.

She was about four years old.

Her blonde hair was tied into two small ponytails.

She was coloring a picture of a family.

A woman entered the room.

Vanessa.

She was no longer wearing her wedding ring.

She had been released pending further investigation, and her lawyer had arranged temporary restrictions rather than immediate detention.

She placed a glass of milk on the table.

“Emily, sweetheart.””

The little girl looked up.

“Yes?””

“Do you remember what I told you?””

Emily nodded.

“I'm not supposed to talk about my real family.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Good girl.””

Emily looked down at her drawing.

There were three people.

A man.

A woman.

And a little girl.

Vanessa frowned.

“Who is that?””

Emily pointed.

“My daddy.””

“That's not your daddy.””

Emily looked confused.

“He looks like the man in the picture.””

Vanessa snatched the drawing.

“What picture?””

“The one in the drawer.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Which drawer?””

Emily pointed toward the hallway.

Vanessa immediately walked into the bedroom.

She opened the bottom drawer of a cabinet.

Inside was an old photograph.

Robert Carter.

Sophia.

And a newborn baby.

Vanessa stared at it.

Then she heard Emily speaking behind her.

“Why does the lady in the picture look like me?””

Vanessa slowly turned.

The little girl was standing in the doorway.

Holding another photograph.

A photograph of Sophia.

And beside it was a small hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was:

*EMILY SOPHIA CARTER.*

Vanessa's face went completely white.

Because Emily had just found the one thing she had spent four years hiding.
