Chapter 9: The Choice My Father Made
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
I stared at it on the floor.
My father.
Nicole.
A courthouse.
A document.
And those words burned into my mind.
*“He knew exactly what he was signing.””*
For the first time since all the secrets started falling apart, I felt something worse than anger.
Doubt.
Because what if Nicole was telling the truth?
What if my father wasn’t just someone who had been fooled?
What if he had made a choice?
I picked up the photograph and walked downstairs.
My dad was sitting at the kitchen table with Daniel and Rachel.
The moment he saw my face, he stood.
“What happened?””
I placed the photo in front of him.
The room went silent.
My dad stared at it.
And I saw it.
A reaction.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know this picture.””
His eyes closed.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I need the truth.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I need the whole truth.””
My dad slowly sat down.
The chair scraped against the floor.
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“I knew this day would come.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Nicole always said if she couldn’t control me anymore, she would use the one thing she had left.””
I looked at the photograph.
“The truth?””
My dad nodded.
“But not the truth.””
He looked at me.
“Her version of it.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then tell me yours.””
My dad looked older than he had yesterday.
Older than I had ever seen him.
“The night before Nicole accused me, she gave me papers.””
“What kind of papers?””
“Legal documents.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“About what?””
My dad looked at him.
“About custody.””
The room became quiet.
My dad continued.
“She told me she was scared my ex-wife would come back and take Emma.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“She said that?””
My dad nodded.
“She convinced me your mother was planning to fight for you.””
I looked away.
Because now I understood.
Fear had been Nicole’s weapon.
Not just against me.
Against everyone.
“She told me signing the papers would protect you.””
My voice became quiet.
“And you believed her.””
My dad looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
More than an excuse would have.
“What did you sign?””
He took a shaky breath.
“A temporary guardianship agreement.””
Rachel frowned.
“Temporary?””
“Yes.””
My dad looked at the photograph.
“But Nicole changed the document.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
“She replaced pages.””
Daniel stood.
“Are you sure?””
“I found out later.””
My dad’s voice cracked.
“The document I signed gave her temporary authority to make decisions for Emma if I was unavailable.””
My stomach twisted.
“And the one she filed?””
My dad looked at me.
“Gave her full control.””
Nobody spoke.
The room felt heavy.
“She planned it.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
My dad looked at me.
“Because I was ashamed.””
That answer surprised me.
“Shamed?””
“I trusted the wrong person.””
He looked down.
“And because after everything happened, I thought I could fix it.””
I shook my head.
“You kept trying to fix things without telling me they were broken.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The words were quiet.
But they were true.
Daniel opened his laptop.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He clicked through the files.
“I found the original agreement.””
My dad stared.
“Where?””
“In the files Nicole kept.””
Rachel frowned.
“Why would she keep evidence against herself?””
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“Because people like Nicole always believe they are smarter than everyone else.””
The document appeared on screen.
My dad read it carefully.
Then he froze.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
And saw the signature.
His.
But below it was something else.
A handwritten note.
A note added after he signed.
My eyes moved across the words.
*“If Marcus becomes unstable or emotionally influenced by Emma’s biological mother, Nicole Walker will assume complete parental authority.””*
I felt sick.
“She planned to make you look unstable.””
My dad nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And my mother?””
His face changed.
“She was never trying to take you.””
My throat tightened.
“She was trying to warn you.””
My dad looked at me.
“She sent letters.””
The words hurt.
“Letters you never gave me.””
His silence was enough.
I stepped back.
“You had them?””
My dad looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.””
“What do you mean?””
“Nicole told me they were hate letters.””
I stared at him.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed her.””
He nodded.
“I did.””
The room was silent.
Then my dad said the words I had waited years to hear.
“I failed you.””
I looked at him.
Not because I wanted to punish him.
Because I needed him to understand.
“Yes.””
A tear rolled down his face.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
“I know.””
And for the first time, I meant it.
The next morning, we made a plan.
Not because we wanted revenge.
Because we needed to stop Nicole.
Daniel had found one final file.
A recording.
A conversation between Nicole and someone else.
Someone who had been helping her.
Someone we still hadn’t identified.
“We need to hear it,” my dad said.
Daniel nodded.
He pressed play.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then Nicole’s voice.
“She knows too much.””
A man answered:
“Then deal with her.””
My blood ran cold.
Rachel leaned closer.
The man continued:
“You waited too long.””
Nicole sounded angry.
“I needed her trust.””
“You always underestimate children.””
Nicole laughed.
“Emma is emotional. She’s easy.””
I felt my fists tighten.
Then the man spoke again.
“What about Lily?””
Nicole’s voice changed.
“Lily was never the problem.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“She’s useful because Emma loves her.””
Rachel looked at me.
Nicole continued:
“Emma would do anything for Lily.””
The man laughed.
“So the plan still works.””
My dad stood.
“What plan?””
The recording continued.
Nicole whispered:
“Once Marcus signs the final documents, Emma will be removed from the house.””
My breathing stopped.
Removed.
Not sent away.
Not moved.
Removed.
Daniel paused the recording.
Everyone was silent.
My dad’s face was pale.
“She was going to take you.””
I looked at Lily’s photo on the table.
“And Lily?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
The recording had one more section.
He played it.
The man asked:
“And the younger daughter?””
Nicole answered:
“She gets what she needs.””
A pause.
Then:
“She’s mine.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Because we all understood.
Nicole didn’t love Lily.
She loved ownership.
That evening, my dad received a call.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
We all looked at him.
“Where?””
He stood.
“What happened?””
He hung up.
His hands were shaking.
“Nicole was arrested.””
Nobody spoke.
Rachel looked shocked.
“How?””
My dad looked at me.
“She turned herself in.””
That didn’t make sense.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because she claims she has proof.””
“Proof of what?””
My dad looked toward the front door.
“She says she can prove I knew everything.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“She says she has evidence that I agreed to her plan.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
My dad didn’t answer.
Because there was something else.
Something he wasn’t saying.
I stepped closer.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“What aren’t you telling us?””
His eyes filled with guilt.
Then he whispered:
“Before Nicole was arrested…”
A pause.
“She sent me one last document.””
My stomach tightened.
“What document?””
My dad looked at the floor.
“The original contract.””
“And?””
His voice cracked.
“It had my signature.””
The room went silent.
“But that’s impossible.””
My dad shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It’s not.””
My heart pounded.
“Why?””
Because my father’s next words changed everything.
“Because I did sign it.””
He looked at the family he almost lost.
“But I signed it before I knew who Nicole really was.””
Then he pulled a folded paper from his jacket.
And on the bottom of the page was a signature.
Not Nicole’s.
Not Daniel’s.
Not mine.
My mother’s.
My dad whispered:
“Your mother knew the truth before any of us.””
The doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
My dad looked toward the entrance.
“No one was supposed to be here.””
The bell rang again.
Then a voice called from outside.
A voice I recognized.
My mother.
“Marcus.””
My dad opened the door.
And my mother stood there holding a folder.
Her face was terrified.
“Emma needs to know what happened the night you signed those papers.””
May you like
She looked at my father.
“And why you chose Nicole over me.””
