Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Nicole’s Lies

For five seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The voice on the phone stayed silent.

Waiting.

As if he knew I needed a moment to understand what he had just said.

*“I was Nicole’s partner.””*

The words echoed in my head.

My dad stood across from me, watching my expression.

“Emma?””

I couldn’t answer him.

Not yet.

Because my entire life had been built around a story.

My mother left.

My father moved on.

Nicole became my stepmother.

And somehow, despite all the problems, we were supposed to be a family.

But every piece of that story was cracking apart.

“Who are you?”” I finally asked.

The man exhaled.

“My name is Daniel Carter.””

My dad’s face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You know him?””

I covered the phone microphone.

My dad stared at me.

Then slowly shook his head.

“No.””

But his eyes said something else.

He was afraid.

I put the phone back to my ear.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I have something Nicole spent years trying to destroy.””

“What?””

“Proof.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Proof of what?””

“That she planned everything.””

I looked at my dad.

His expression was unreadable.

“Where are you?””

The man hesitated.

“That’s complicated.””

“Why?””

“Because Nicole doesn’t know I’m alive.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

My dad stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

I lowered the phone.

“The man who was with Nicole the night she accused you.””

My dad went completely still.

Then he whispered:

“Daniel.””

The way he said the name told me everything.

He knew more than he had admitted.

I turned back to the phone.

“You know my father.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel answered:

“Because I helped Nicole destroy him.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You’re admitting that?””

“I have to.””

“Why now?””

His voice became quieter.

“Because I realized I wasn’t the only person she destroyed.””

I looked at the old documents on the table.

The photo.

The police reports.

Everything that had been hidden.

“What happened?””

Daniel sighed.

“I met Nicole two years before she married your father.””

My stomach tightened.

Two years.

That meant Nicole was already part of our lives before she became my stepmother.

“She never told us she knew someone.””

“She wouldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because she was already planning her future.””

My dad looked at me.

I put the phone on speaker.

He needed to hear this.

Daniel continued.

“Nicole was smart. She studied people. She learned what they wanted to hear.””

My dad’s jaw tightened.

“She convinced me she loved me.””

“And you believed her?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“She made me feel like I was the only person who understood her.””

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

“What did she want?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“Your father’s money.””

My dad looked away.

I knew he hated hearing that.

But I also knew he needed to.

“She knew Marcus had a good job. She knew he was respected. She knew he was a single father who wanted someone to love his daughter.””

My chest tightened.

“She used me.””

My dad’s voice was barely audible.

Daniel continued.

“She knew exactly how to get close to you.””

I looked at my dad.

“She told you what you wanted to hear.””

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Daniel said something that made me freeze.

“She didn’t just want to marry your father.””

“What else?””

“She wanted Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“Because Nicole knew a child would make your father easier to control.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted to replace my mother.””

“She wanted to erase her.””

The room was silent.

My dad sat down.

His face looked broken.

“How could I not see it?””

I looked at him.

I wanted to tell him it wasn’t his fault.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

Because I was still angry.

Not just at Nicole.

At everyone who had watched me struggle and called it normal.

I turned back to the phone.

“What proof do you have?””

Daniel answered immediately.

“Emails.””

“Between you and Nicole?””

“Yes.””

“Messages?””

“Yes.””

“Photos?””

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“Where are they?””

“Safe.””

“That doesn’t help me.””

“I know.””

His voice became urgent.

“That’s why I need to meet you.””

My dad shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

He mouthed:

“Too dangerous.””

Daniel heard.

“He’s right to be cautious.””

“You expect me to meet a stranger who says he helped ruin my family?””

“I don’t expect you to trust me.””

“Then what do you expect?””

A pause.

Then:

“I expect you to want the truth.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because he was right.

I did.

More than anything.

The next morning, my dad refused to let me go alone.

“I’m coming with you.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t trust him.””

“No.””

“Then why come?””

“Because I spent years letting other people tell our story.””

He grabbed his jacket.

“I’m done with that.””

We met Daniel at a quiet diner on the edge of town.

He was sitting in the back corner.

When he saw my dad, he stood.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then my dad walked closer.

“You look different.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Ten years will do that.””

I studied him.

He looked nothing like the villain I imagined.

That almost made it worse.

Because villains were easy.

Real people were complicated.

Daniel sat down.

“I owe you both an apology.””

My dad didn’t sit.

“You owe me more than that.””

“I know.””

“You almost sent me to prison.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

My dad’s voice became cold.

“Why should I listen to you?””

Daniel reached into his bag.

Then placed a small flash drive on the table.

“Because this is the recording Nicole used against you.””

Nobody spoke.

My dad stared at it.

“You have the original?””

Daniel nodded.

“She edited it.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“So if we listen to this…”

“You’ll hear what really happened.””

My dad slowly sat down.

Daniel looked at me.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The night Nicole accused your father, she wasn’t alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Who else?””

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“Someone you know.””

My dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone who helped her.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

“What?””

My dad noticed.

“What happened?””

Daniel slowly stood.

“We have to leave.””

“Why?””

Daniel showed us his phone.

There was one message.

One picture.

A photo taken inside the diner.

Of the three of us sitting together.

Someone had been watching.

Under the photo was a message:

*“I knew you would come back, Daniel.””*

My blood turned cold.

Daniel whispered:

“She found me.””

Then another message arrived.

This one had only four words.

May you like

But they terrified him.

*“Bring me Emma.””*
