Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Buried

I read Nicole’s message three times.

My mother watched my face change.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

Because somehow, even after everything, Nicole still knew exactly where to strike.

She knew the one thing I had never been able to understand.

My father.

The man who had always seemed steady.

The man who had worked late nights to pay the bills.

The man who hugged me when I had nightmares.

The man who apologized for not seeing the truth sooner.

Almost went to prison?

I looked at my mother.

“What happened the night my father almost went to prison?””

Her expression collapsed.

And that was when I knew.

She knew.

My mother slowly looked away.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“Not again.””

She looked back at me.

“What do you mean?””

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

I pushed the envelope back onto the table.

“Dad did it. Nicole did it. Now you’re doing it.””

Tears filled my mother’s eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She was silent.

I leaned closer.

“Please.””

The word came out softer.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“I spent my whole life believing one version of my family.””

I looked down at the letter.

“And now I’m finding out almost everything was a lie.””

My mother took a deep breath.

Then she whispered:

“Your father was accused of hurting someone.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Nicole.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt too loud.

The sound of cups clinking.

People talking.

Cars passing outside.

Everything became distant.

“Nicole accused Dad?””

My mother nodded.

“She said he threatened her.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Why would she do that?””

My mother’s fingers trembled.

“Because she wanted custody.””

I stared at her.

“Custody?””

“She wanted to become the only parent you had.””

The words felt impossible.

My mother continued.

“After I left, Nicole convinced everyone that I was unstable. She told people I couldn’t handle motherhood. She told your father I was going to disappear anyway.””

My throat tightened.

“But she was the one who made me disappear.””

“Yes.””

My mother’s voice cracked.

“She slowly isolated everyone.””

I looked at the folder.

At all the letters I never received.

“How did Dad almost go to prison?””

My mother swallowed.

“Because she lied.””

A chill went through me.

“What did she lie about?””

“She told the police your father attacked her during an argument.””

I shook my head.

“My dad would never do that.””

“I know.””

“Then why did they believe her?””

My mother looked down.

“Because she had evidence.””

My heart sank.

“What evidence?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“A recording.””

I froze.

“What kind of recording?””

“She edited it.””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“She recorded your father when he was angry. Then she cut the parts before and after to make it sound like he was threatening her.””

I stared at the table.

A memory surfaced.

I was younger.

Maybe seven.

I remembered my dad sitting in the kitchen late at night.

His hands shaking.

Nicole standing near him.

Crying.

I remembered hearing her say:

“You’re going to lose everything.””

At the time, I thought she was talking about their marriage.

Now I wondered.

Maybe she was talking about me.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Nicole again.

*“Ask your mother why she left before she could save your father.””*

My mother saw it.

Her face went pale.

“She’s contacting you?””

“Yes.””

My mother looked frightened.

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That you’re finally asking questions.””

A strange anger rose inside me.

“How does she always know everything?””

My mother didn’t answer.

And that scared me more.

When I returned home, the house felt different.

Not because anything had changed.

Because I had changed.

Every room looked like it was hiding something.

The family photos on the walls.

The smiling faces.

The memories.

How many of them were real?

My dad was sitting at the kitchen table.

The same table where Nicole had blamed me.

The same place where everything had fallen apart.

He looked up.

“You met her.””

I nodded.

“How did you know?””

His eyes moved toward my phone.

“Nicole called me.””

Of course she did.

“She told you not to trust her?””

My dad didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I sat across from him.

“Did Nicole accuse you of hurting her?””

His face changed.

A tiny reaction.

But I saw it.

The same way I saw Nicole’s fear when Lily showed the camera.

My dad looked down.

“Who told you?””

“My mother.””

Silence.

Then my dad whispered:

“She told you.””

“Was it true?””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Did you almost go to prison?””

My dad leaned back.

For a moment, he looked older.

Much older.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“But I didn’t do what she said.””

I nodded slowly.

“I believe you.””

He looked surprised.

“After everything?””

I swallowed.

“Because I know what it feels like to be accused of something you didn’t do.””

Pain crossed his face.

“Emma…”

“But I need the truth.””

He nodded.

“You deserve it.””

For the next hour, my dad told me everything.

The argument.

The accusation.

The police.

The fear.

And the part he had never told me.

“The night Nicole accused me, she said something.””

“What?””

My dad stared at the floor.

“She said if I fought back, she would make sure you hated me.””

My breath caught.

“She used me?””

“Yes.””

He covered his face.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

My voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked at him.

“Everyone says that.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

The honesty hurt.

Because it was the first time he understood.

Protection without truth was still a cage.

My dad stood and walked to a cabinet.

He opened it.

Then pulled out an old box.

“I kept this.””

He placed it on the table.

Inside were documents.

Court papers.

Police reports.

And one photograph.

I picked it up.

It was Nicole.

Standing outside our old house.

But she wasn’t alone.

There was a man beside her.

Someone I had never seen before.

“Who is that?””

My dad’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I saw him once.””

“When?””

“The night before Nicole accused me.””

I looked closer.

Something about the man felt familiar.

Not his face.

Something else.

The way he was standing.

The way Nicole was looking at him.

Like they shared a secret.

My dad took the photo from my hand.

“I should have looked into it.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because at the time, I was trying to prove I wasn’t guilty.””

The room went quiet.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

My dad looked at the screen.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face was tense.

“Because whoever is calling knows something about that night.””

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, I answered.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

A voice I had never heard before.

But the words made my entire body freeze.

“Emma?””

I gripped the phone.

“Who is this?””

The man breathed out slowly.

“I’m the reason your stepmother never wanted you to find out the truth.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

The man paused.

Then whispered:

“Because I was there the night Nicole framed your father.””

I stood up.

My dad stared at me.

May you like

And then the man said the words that changed everything.

“I was Nicole’s partner.””
