Chapter 6: The Person We Never Suspected
The message stayed on Daniel’s phone screen.
Four words.
Four words that made the entire diner feel smaller.
*“Bring me Emma.””*
I stared at it.
My first thought wasn’t fear.
It was confusion.
Why me?
Nicole had spent years trying to control my life.
She had blamed me.
Manipulated me.
Made me feel like I was never enough.
But this was different.
This wasn’t about making me feel guilty.
This was about wanting something from me.
My dad stood up immediately.
“We’re leaving.””
Daniel nodded.
For once, he didn’t argue.
We walked out of the diner quickly.
The cold air hit my face, but I barely noticed.
My mind was racing.
“Who sent that message?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
My dad stopped walking.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I don’t know exactly where she is.””
“But you know who.””
Daniel looked away.
And that was enough.
My dad stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Someone close to you.””
The words felt like a warning.
Not an answer.
“Stop doing that,” I said.
Both men looked at me.
“I’m tired of half-truths.””
My voice shook.
“I spent my entire life surrounded by secrets.””
I pointed toward the flash drive in Daniel’s hand.
“I need the truth. All of it.””
Daniel looked at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“You’re right.””
He took a deep breath.
“The person who helped Nicole was someone who had access to your family.””
My dad frowned.
“Someone in my house?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Before he could respond, a car engine started nearby.
A black SUV pulled out from the parking lot.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Get in the car.””
My dad looked toward the SUV.
“Is that them?””
“I don’t know.””
“You said you didn’t know anything.””
“I said I didn’t know who sent the message.””
Daniel’s voice became urgent.
“Please. Not here.””
Something about the fear in his voice made us move.
We drove for twenty minutes without speaking.
My dad kept checking the mirrors.
Daniel held the flash drive like it was the only thing keeping him alive.
Finally, my dad broke the silence.
“You knew Nicole was dangerous.””
Daniel stared out the window.
“Yes.””
“And you still helped her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I thought I loved her.””
My dad laughed bitterly.
“People always say that after they destroy someone’s life.””
Daniel didn’t fight back.
“I deserve that.””
The answer surprised me.
Most guilty people looked for excuses.
Daniel looked like someone carrying a punishment he had given himself.
“What happened between you and Nicole?”” I asked.
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“She betrayed me.””
“How?””
“She promised me we would leave together.””
My dad looked at him.
“She was going to leave me?””
Daniel nodded.
“She told me once she got control of your finances, she would disappear.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She planned everything.””
“Yes.””
“What stopped her?””
Daniel looked at me.
“You.””
I froze.
“Me?””
“She realized something.””
“What?””
“That your father would never abandon you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Daniel continued.
“Nicole understood that as long as you were around, your father would always choose you over her.””
My dad looked down.
“That’s why she hated me.””
Daniel nodded.
“She didn’t hate you because you were difficult.””
He looked at me.
“She hated you because you were the one person she couldn’t control.””
For some reason, that hurt.
Because all those years, I thought I was the problem.
I thought I was too sensitive.
Too emotional.
Too much.
But maybe I had just been standing in the way of someone who wanted complete control.
We arrived at an old storage building outside town.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where are we?””
“A place nobody knows about.””
My dad immediately shook his head.
“That sounds exactly like somewhere we shouldn’t be.””
Daniel sighed.
“I understand.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked at the building.
“This is where I kept copies of everything.””
My dad narrowed his eyes.
“You had proof for years?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was afraid.””
My anger rose.
“Afraid?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Do you know how many years I spent believing my mother didn’t love me?””
His expression broke.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to wonder why someone leaves.””
Daniel looked down.
“You’re right.””
He opened the door.
“But I can help you know why.””
Inside the building were shelves.
Boxes.
Old files.
A small desk.
Daniel walked to the back and opened a locked cabinet.
Inside were dozens of envelopes.
Photos.
Documents.
And a laptop.
My dad stared.
“What is all this?””
“Everything Nicole tried to hide.””
Daniel placed the laptop on the desk.
“I saved copies of her messages.””
He opened a folder.
The screen filled with conversations.
Nicole’s name appeared again and again.
I stepped closer.
The first message I saw made my stomach drop.
*Nicole: “Once he signs the papers, I’ll have what I need.””*
My dad went still.
“What papers?””
Daniel clicked another message.
*Nicole: “I just need Emma out of the way.””*
My breath caught.
Another message appeared.
*Daniel: “You can’t keep blaming a child.””*
*Nicole: “Watch me.””*
I covered my mouth.
My dad looked like he had been punched.
“She wrote this?””
Daniel nodded.
“She didn’t know I saved everything.””
I kept scrolling.
Then I saw something.
A name.
A name I recognized.
My blood froze.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at me.
I pointed at the screen.
“This person.””
My dad stepped closer.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“I know this name.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You do?””
I nodded slowly.
“It’s someone from my school.””
The room went silent.
My dad looked confused.
“Why would someone from your school be involved?””
I didn’t know.
But suddenly, memories started connecting.
A person who always asked questions.
A person who always seemed to know what was happening in my house.
A person who had comforted me after Nicole yelled at me.
A person who had acted like my friend.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is this?””
He stared at the screen.
Then whispered:
“She’s the reason Nicole always knew where you were.””
My heart pounded.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
My dad grabbed the edge of the desk.
“Tell us.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology made my fear worse.
“Tell me.””
Daniel pointed at the name.
And said:
“Your stepsister Lily’s babysitter.””
I blinked.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She wasn’t just a babysitter.””
My dad’s face turned pale.
“What was she?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
Like he was afraid someone might be listening.
“She was Nicole’s daughter.””
I froze.
“Nicole’s daughter?””
My dad stared at him.
“That’s not possible.””
Daniel whispered:
“Nicole never told you because she wanted you to believe Lily was her only child.””
The room spun.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, Lily is her daughter.””
Daniel looked at me sadly.
“Yes.””
“Then who are you talking about?””
He looked back at the screen.
The name stared at us.
A name I had seen before.
A name I had trusted.
A name that made everything inside me collapse.
“Emma,” Daniel said quietly.
“That woman isn’t Lily’s babysitter.””
My fingers went numb.
“She’s Nicole’s first daughter.””
I stared at the screen.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From the person whose name was on the laptop.
I opened it.
And my heart stopped.
*“I know you found the files.””*
May you like
A second message appeared.
*“Now you need to know what your father did to my mother.””*
