Chapter 8: The Plan Nicole Hid for Years
The paper in Lily’s hand trembled.
So did mine.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Rachel.
Not even Lily.
The hallway around us continued as normal.
Students laughed.
Lockers slammed.
Teachers walked past.
But inside that moment, everything felt frozen.
“Why does it have my name on it?”” I asked.
My voice barely came out.
Lily looked down.
“I don’t know.””
She held the paper tighter.
“I found it hidden inside Mom’s closet.””
Rachel’s face changed when she heard that.
“Her closet?””
Lily nodded.
“She had a box behind her clothes.””
My stomach twisted.
Another box.
Another hidden secret.
It seemed like Nicole had built an entire life out of locked doors.
I reached for the paper.
Lily handed it to me.
The first thing I noticed was the handwriting.
Nicole’s.
My eyes moved down the page.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Notes.
And beside my name were words that made my hands shake.
*Emma Walker — primary obstacle.*
I stopped breathing.
“What is this?””
Rachel stepped closer.
Her eyes scanned the page.
Then she whispered:
“She was tracking you.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel pointed at the paper.
“These aren’t random notes.””
I read the lines again.
There were dates from years ago.
My first day of middle school.
My birthday.
The day my mother contacted me.
The day I argued with Nicole.
She had written everything down.
Every moment.
Every weakness.
Every opportunity.
My skin crawled.
“She was studying me.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why would Mom do that?””
I looked at my little sister.
And for a second, I forgot everything else.
Because Lily didn’t deserve this.
She was still a child trying to understand why the person who was supposed to protect her had hurt everyone.
I knelt down beside her.
“I don’t know.””
It was the hardest answer to give.
Because I wanted to protect her from the truth.
But I knew better now.
Secrets only protected the people who created them.
Not the people trapped inside them.
We went back to my house immediately.
My dad was waiting outside.
The second he saw Lily’s face, he knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
Lily ran to him.
Not away.
Not afraid.
She ran to him.
And that small thing almost broke me.
Because she still trusted him.
My dad hugged her tightly.
Then looked at me.
“What did you find?””
I handed him the paper.
He read it.
And his expression slowly changed.
Anger.
Shock.
Then something worse.
Fear.
“She wrote all of this?””
I nodded.
Daniel, who had arrived minutes earlier, took the paper from him.
His face became serious.
“This is not just documentation.””
“What do you mean?”” I asked.
He pointed to the notes.
“She was creating a profile.””
“A profile?””
“Your habits. Your emotions. Your relationships.””
My dad looked sick.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she needed to know how to control you.””
The room went quiet.
Lily sat on the couch, holding a blanket around herself.
I hated that she was hearing this.
But I also knew hiding the truth from her was how we got here.
My dad walked toward the window.
“She wanted Emma gone.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a breath.
“My mother didn’t just want Emma gone.””
She looked at the paper.
“She wanted Emma dependent.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
Rachel sat down slowly.
“She didn’t want you to leave.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
Rachel looked at me.
“My mother knew if you hated everyone else, you would only have her.””
A chill went through me.
“She wanted me to need her.””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“That was always Nicole’s pattern.””
My dad looked at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I saw it happen.””
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
The question was quiet.
But it carried years of pain.
Daniel looked down.
“Because I was selfish.””
Nobody spoke.
“I thought if I helped her, she would choose me.””
He laughed bitterly.
“I didn’t realize I was helping her destroy people.””
My dad looked away.
For once, he didn’t argue.
Because maybe he understood what it felt like to realize too late.
That evening, we opened the flash drive.
All of us sat around the table.
The same table where Nicole had accused me.
But this time, the truth was sitting with us.
Daniel opened the first file.
“Most of this is from before she married Marcus.””
The video loaded.
Nicole appeared on screen.
Younger.
Smiling.
Talking to someone outside the camera’s view.
Then her voice filled the room.
“I just need him to trust me.””
My dad went still.
Nicole continued.
“He wants a family. That makes him easy.””
I looked at my dad.
His face showed pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
The video continued.
A man’s voice asked:
“What about the daughter?””
Nicole laughed.
“Emma?””
My body froze.
“Yes.””
Nicole’s smile disappeared.
“She’s the only problem.””
Lily covered her mouth.
I couldn’t look away.
“She’s old enough to remember her mother,” Nicole said.
The man asked:
“So?””
“So I need to change the story.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
My dad closed his eyes.
I think that hurt him more than the court accusation.
Because he finally heard what she had always been.
A plan.
Not a partner.
Not a mother.
A plan.
The second file was worse.
It was an audio recording.
Nicole’s voice.
“Rachel, you need to understand something.””
A younger Rachel answered.
“What?””
“You are going to help me.””
“I don’t want to.””
“You don’t get a choice.””
Silence.
Then Rachel’s younger voice:
“I just want Dad.””
Nicole laughed.
“Your father is not your future.””
My heart hurt for Rachel.
Nicole continued.
“You will do what I ask, and one day you’ll understand why.””
The recording stopped.
Rachel wiped her eyes.
“I was fourteen.””
Nobody said anything.
Because there was nothing to say.
A child had been turned into a weapon.
Just like Lily almost had been.
My dad looked at Rachel.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For not seeing it.””
Rachel looked down.
“You didn’t know.””
“I should have.””
The same words.
Again.
But this time, I understood.
Everyone in that room had been hurt by the same person.
Later that night, I went upstairs.
I needed silence.
I needed a moment where nobody was explaining my life to me.
I sat on my bed and looked at the old photos on my shelf.
My mother.
My father.
A younger version of me.
A version of me who believed adults always knew what they were doing.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
My stomach tightened.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No voice.
Just breathing.
Then a recording started.
Nicole.
My blood froze.
“Emma.””
I stood up.
“How did you get this number?””
She ignored the question.
“I know you found the files.””
I looked toward the door.
My dad was downstairs.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Nicole continued.
“You think you understand everything now.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“But you don’t.””
I gripped the phone.
“What else is there?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“The reason your mother left.””
My heart stopped.
“That’s not true.””
“Oh, Emma.””
Her voice softened.
“You really think everyone who loves you tells you the truth?””
I said nothing.
Nicole laughed quietly.
“Ask your father what happened the night he chose money over you.””
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
But she had already hung up.
I stared at the phone.
Then I heard a sound.
A soft movement outside my bedroom door.
I opened it.
Nobody was there.
Only an envelope on the floor.
My name was written on the front.
I picked it up.
Inside was one photograph.
A photograph of my father.
Standing outside a courthouse.
Holding a document.
And beside him was Nicole.
May you like
On the back of the photo were seven words.
*“He knew exactly what he was signing.””*
