Chapter 8: The Witness Nobody Expected
The man in the photograph was named Ethan.
My childhood neighbor.
Vanessa’s former best friend.
And the person who had once destroyed my relationship with my entire family.
I hadn’t seen him in twelve years.
Daniel searched his face online.
“What is his connection to you?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
I answered.
“He knows our family.””
Daniel looked at me.
“How?””
I stared at the photograph.
“Because he helped her.””
Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward me.
“Don’t.””
I looked at her.
“You used him.””
Her face changed.
That was enough.
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
I took a breath.
“When I was seventeen, Vanessa told everyone I had stolen money from our parents.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“She said I took cash from Mom’s drawer.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Ethan was the person who claimed he saw me.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Was that true?””
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
The word came quietly.
“No, it wasn’t.””
I closed my eyes.
Even after all these years, hearing her admit it hurt.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You ruined her reputation.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was angry.””
“You were seventeen.””
“I know.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, she wasn’t fighting.
She was accepting.
But then Daniel looked at the security image again.
“Why was Ethan at the pool?””
Nobody knew.
So we found out.
The next morning, Daniel contacted him.
Ethan agreed to meet.
Not because he was sorry.
Because he wanted something.
When he arrived at the resort, he looked exactly the same.
Confident.
Charming.
The kind of person who smiled while causing damage.
He sat across from us.
“I assume Vanessa told you.””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Told me what?””
Ethan smiled.
“That she and I have history.””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Ethan, stop.””
He ignored her.
“We used to be close.””
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
“How close?””
She looked down.
Too late.
The answer was obvious.
Ethan laughed.
“She never told you?””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Told me what?””
Vanessa stood.
“Enough.””
But Ethan continued.
“Before you came along, Vanessa and I had plans.””
My stomach tightened.
“What plans?””
Ethan smiled.
“Plans that involved getting what we deserved.””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan leaned back.
“Vanessa always believed people owed her something.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“You promised.””
Ethan looked at her.
“And you broke your promise first.””
A terrible silence followed.
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He placed a small recording device on the table.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Where did you get that?””
Ethan smiled.
“You really should have been more careful.””
Daniel pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
My blood froze.
It was Vanessa.
And she was talking about me.
“She always gets sympathy.””
A pause.
“She doesn’t even have to try.””
Ethan’s voice followed.
“So what are you going to do?””
Then Vanessa answered.
Something I never expected.
“I’m going to remind everyone who she really is.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Was this about the pool?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“The pool wasn’t supposed to happen.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Ethan smiled.
“She wanted to embarrass you.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know he would push you.””
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
“You didn’t push me?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“No.””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
She looked at Ethan.
“I thought he was just going to scare you.””
Daniel stood.
“Wait.””
His voice was dangerous.
“Ethan pushed her?””
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
And then Vanessa said the words that changed everything.
“She planned the humiliation.””
May you like
A pause.
“But he turned it into something worse.””
