Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Ring

The message from the wedding planner arrived at 9:42 p.m.

Daniel read it three times.

Then he looked at me.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

“What did she do?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation scared me more than the message itself.

Daniel called the wedding planner immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

“Daniel?””

“What is this about?””

A pause.

Then a tired sigh.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to tell you.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket covering my shoulders.

Daniel put the phone on speaker.

“Tell me.””

The woman on the other end sounded nervous.

“Vanessa changed the guest list.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s not exactly shocking.””

“No. You don’t understand.””

A pause.

“She removed people.””

“Who?””

The woman took a breath.

“Your sister.””

I looked at Daniel.

“My sister?””

The planner continued.

“She told me your sister wasn’t supportive of the marriage. She said your family needed distance from the wedding because they were jealous.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

“Yes.””

The word came immediately.

“She admitted it to me privately.””

I felt cold.

Vanessa had always been competitive.

But this was different.

“She said she wanted a perfect wedding,” the planner continued.

“She said certain people would ruin the image.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Who else?””

The planner went silent.

Then she said:

“Your mother.””

Daniel stood up.

“What?””

“She removed your mother from one of the planning meetings.””

His face changed.

I understood then.

This wasn’t just about me.

Vanessa had been controlling everything around her.

Daniel ended the call after thanking the planner.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I said, “You should ask yourself why she did it.””

He looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

“Vanessa doesn’t just hurt people randomly.””

I swallowed.

“She does it when she feels threatened.””

Daniel sat back down.

“Threatened by you?””

I nodded slowly.

“When we were younger, she hated sharing attention.””

I looked out the window at the dark ocean.

“When our parents divorced, she told everyone I was the reason Mom cried.””

Daniel frowned.

“That wasn’t true.””

“No.””

My voice became quieter.

“But everyone believed her.””

I remembered being twelve years old, standing in the hallway while relatives whispered.

I remembered trying to explain.

Nobody listened.

Daniel looked at me differently.

Not with pity.

With understanding.

“How long has this been happening?””

I smiled sadly.

“Most of my life.””

The next morning, Vanessa arrived at the resort.

She didn’t come to apologize.

She came to negotiate.

She walked into the hotel lobby wearing sunglasses and a designer dress, as if she was arriving for a photoshoot instead of dealing with the destruction she caused.

Daniel stood near the entrance.

I stayed several feet away.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

“Can we talk?””

“No.””

Her smile faltered.

“Please.””

“You already said enough yesterday.””

She lowered her voice.

“I made a mistake.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

A mistake.

That was what she called it.

Not cruelty.

Not betrayal.

A mistake.

Daniel stared at her.

“You pushed someone with a healing injury into a pool.””

“I didn’t mean for her to get hurt.””

“You knew she could get hurt.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She’s making you hate me.””

I stepped forward.

“No, Vanessa.””

She looked surprised.

“I didn’t do this.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You always wanted to be the good one.””

That sentence revealed more than she intended.

Because she didn’t see me as her sister.

She saw me as competition.

Daniel looked between us.

“Why?””

Vanessa blinked.

“Why what?””

“Why are you like this?””

For the first time, she had no prepared answer.

Her lips parted.

Then she whispered:

“Because everyone always chose her.””

I stared.

“That’s not true.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You don’t even know.””

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“What happened before we met?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

A small crack appeared.

Then her phone rang.

She looked down.

Her expression turned from anger to panic.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is calling?””

She quickly rejected the call.

Nobody moved.

Then the phone rang again.

This time, Daniel saw the name.

His eyes narrowed.

Because the person calling Vanessa was someone he thought was gone forever.

Someone connected to the beginning of their relationship.

The screen showed one name:

*Mark.*

And Daniel whispered:

“Who is Mark?””

May you like

Vanessa didn’t answer.

But the fear on her face did.
